I was already familiar with "Hellboy" from Wizard Magazine, but fell in love with him after getting ahold of the "Seed of Destruction" Omnibus! On Halloween I got the "Monster-Sized Hellboy" hardcover (it's just as big as "Frank Miller's Big, Damn Sin City"), which has all four tpb Omnis. I can't wait to go through it!

Mignola is such a great artist! What you said about his use of blacks is spot on and is what drew me to him as unique and never quite replicated. I have a ton of Mignolaverse stuff on my shelf, but the ones with his artwork I'll probably keep forever. He also did some Moorcock adaptations (The Chronicles of Corum) in the 80s. Check them out if you haven't yet....Jarrod

Didn’t he also do some Elric, not too long ago? I didn’t buy them, so it might just be he did a couple covers. But yeah, I’m also a huge fan of his work! 😀

@@MattonBooks The thing is, I love comics and graphic novels but I don't like superhero comics. Or only unconventional ones. So my comics TBR right now is Blacksad, Saga and Akira. I tried DC's Kingdom Come and hated it. But I might consider something like Moore's Swamp thing. Hellboy sounds non-superman enough to try out.

@@jeroenadmiraal8714 Yeah, that pretty describes my tastes too. Saga is one of my favourites. I’d recommend East of West too - a western-scifi-fantasy that’s pretty epic. And yeah, Hellboy is not at all like mainstream superhero comics.

I'll give you some recommendations, if you don't mind. 'These Savage Shores' by Ram V and Sumit Kumar, a vampire story set in colonial India. A short but brilliant read. 'The Eagles of Rome' by Enrico Marini, a five-part historical epic about the Roman defeat at the hands of Arminius, and a recent favorite, 'In Shadows' by Hubert Boulard and Vincent Mallie, which is a fantasy story with an interesting take on fairy tale tropes.
