CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Liz (Selma Blair) saves Hellboy (Ron Perlman) by sacrificing herself in a deal with the Angel of Death.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Ron Perlman returns to the role of the big red BPRD agent in this sequel to 2004's Hellboy, directed once again by Guillermo del Toro and scripted as before in collaboration with original Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. For centuries, an ancient truce has kept the naïve citizens of the human race safe from the horrors of the invisible realm -- but that's all about to change, and fast. A ruthless leader has emerged in the invisible realm, a tyrant just as comfortable walking the surface realm as he is living in the land of fantasy. When this power-mad ruler defies his bloodline to assemble an unstoppable army of fantastical creatures that he will use to wage a supernatural war on humanity, it begins to appear that humankind's days are numbered. But Hellboy (Perlman) isn't about to stand idly by as the planet is purged by a demonic despot, and with a little help from his team at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, he may just be able to send our otherworldly overlords packing. Of course, Hellboy's pyrokinetic girlfriend, Liz (Selma Blair), is always willing to conjure up an inferno or two when things get desperate, aquatic Abe (Doug Jones) is prepared to dive headlong into any battle, and protoplasmic mystic Johann (voice of Thomas Kretschmann) proves an invaluable companion in times of inter-dimensional conflict. Now, as the creatures who inhabit the spiritual realm gear up for an all-out attack on the human plane, the only one capable of saving the Earth is a tough-talking hellspawn rejected by both worlds.

Yet the angel is concerned with Elizabeth's suffering. I think its because the angel wants her to make a fair choice, without being swayed by its opinion. Ultimately it gives her a choice to save him out of love and him a reason to live, all very positive outcomes.

***** No, angels are the ultimate supporters of God's authority. If that's synonymous with good, that's a secondary consideration. The angel of death is supposedly responsible for the death of every human being that has ever existed, which is tantamount to murder, not a good act, but one in accordance with God's decree.

+Daniel Coben I was stunned when I watched the behind the scenes and saw that they created the character designs and used them on-set. I thought that especially Wink and the Angel of Death were CGI, but I was wrong. I have so much respect for the crew and cast in this film for designing and creating such amazing characters, with an immaculate attention to detail. I love this movie for a couple of reasons. For one, the story is developed yet still remains interesting with a different plot, the new characters (Krauss, Angel of Death, Prince Nuada and Princess Nuala) are fascinating and even though produced in the late 2000's, they haven't fallen into using CGI for character design, instead bringing the characters to life.

The angel even says time and people make no difference, it is all just the same to this angel. The angel is neither good, nor bad. The angel’s duty is merely to collect souls and bring them before God.

This is the precise reason why Angels in the Bible say "Be not afraid." The people seeing them would usually panic for this reason. The Angel of Death's design in this film seems to be heavily influenced by the Book of Ezekiel which describes angels with eyes all over their wings, four faces, flaming swords, and some as Beryllium coloured wheels with eyes. Very different than the Roman Catholic depictions of them.

This noble, selfless sacrifice by Liz could still backfire. She could die and then Hellboy's grief and anguish over losing her could cause him to fall into darkness and still bring about the end of the world. Funny, in a peculiar way, how sacrifice doesn't always yield positive results.

Hellboy is fated to bring about the destruction of the world. It's one of those situations where you simply cannot escape it. Even attempting to foil it would somehow only bring about the very chain of events you were trying to stop. Liz HAS to save Hellboy; her love will not let her do anything else. Likewise, when the time comes, Hellboy WILL destroy the world. The only question is if through that destruction, something new, something BETTER, might be born.

I asked him if there was a creature that he's always wanted to portray and he said an angel, I pointed this out and he laughed it off, "No, a more traditional angel, like Gabriel or Michael. I remember going the movie theater with my dad to see this when it first came out. I remember feeling real bad for Hellboy because i thought he was gonna die by the end of the film, and he was very close to dying. When they all went to visit Angel of Death and when the Angel makes itself more visible to them all, i remember being incredibly fascinated yet felt soo chilled by its appearance, its voice, everything. It has this perplexing presence that not only instills dread and fear but calmness and tranquility, i just love how they designed the Angel's personality. Neither good nor evil, honest and reassuring, frightening and ominous yet beautiful, all at the same time. A fitting image that definitely fits the personification of death well 👌🏼. And i just gotta also point out how amazing it is that they made death speak in 2 different tones both feminine and masculine and how death has no eyes on it's face, signifying that death is balance and death is blind and takes all regardless of who or what you are.

Death will not abandon you in your worst moments of your life and when you reach the peak of the mountain of your life this companion is still with you until that moment when you no longer climb, but just stand above and look down at your journey. This companion is neither friend nor foe, just someone who never ever abandoned you and was steady company.
