The funny thing about Yahtzee's comments on her acting ability is that she wasn't an actress. I can't remember what her job was exactly, but she was just one of the Ninja Theory employees they used for screen testing and decided to keep her lines, footage, and facial caption instead of finding a professional actress.

Now that I'm finally playing this, and finally got to the part where you die if you stay in the dark too long...I'm surprised Yahtzee didn't understand why it kills you. The game literally tells you that there's a horrible monster named Garm who guards the gates of Hel, and that he can't get you in the light but will swiftly close in on you in the dark. You don't die of "being extra insane," you die because a hellbeast shreds you into festive confetti.

I was fairly impressed that there’s literally no tutorial. It doesn’t do the usual thing of telling how to move, how to interact with the environment, no “here’s an enemy we have paralysed below the waist to introduce you to combat.” Nope you either figure it out by yourself or pause and look up the control settings. Admittedly I look like a ponce for not being able to figure out where the dodge button was in the first fight for a second but I thought it was an interesting idea. The voices in Senua’s head were really well done in my opinion. It’s kind of a shame I had to turn on the subtitles because the word slurry you get is probably what real schizophrenics actually go through. The whole “we’ll delete your save” thing I liked too. Sure we as players now know the game is lying to us, however Senua, in the throws of a psychotic episode does not so it’s all in character. Finally the last thing I really liked about the game, when you eventually toggle run on permanently, Senua does this little side stepping hop when you move left that I found oddly adorable. All in all not a bad game but definitely knows it’s a budget title and is priced accordingly.

@@darkartsdabbler2407 I’m not normally against tutorials for the most part. I just found it interesting and a bit more immersive in this particular case. It made me feel more like Senua was a character in her own right, trapped in her own head and having to figure shit out as she went rather than being a PC in a video game who had things explained to her. Now admittedly that immersion was broken a little when I had to stop to look up the dodge button but it was nice to see the game try and treat it a little more organically.

The voices, which I'm surprised he didn't mention, did so much for the game. They went hand in hand with the "permadeath" and made me constantly question if I was doing something wrong. I thought the "permadeath" was perfect. It made you constantly worried and on edge about being in this hostile and alien environment; a perfect fit for the character and story. The combat I found rudimentary, but satisfying to nail those parries and fight reactively to the different enemy types. Overall, loved the game start to fantastic finish.

Those voices would have been great in a non-linear game where you actually have to make choices. They could guide you into different directions, you'd have to decide to trust them or not, your decisions could have consequences and the voices react appropriately. Sadly Senua is pretty simple and obviously linear from the start. All the solutions were rather obvious to me and having voices telling me to not do the obvious thing in order to progress really got on my nerves quick. However, they did convince me to quit the game several times to get a break. If that's supposed to hint at "quitting early" when faced with a mental illness, well done.

Perfectly reasonable to expect a review to mention the voices, but for a comedy routines, there's not much humor to be had from them. And just so we're on the same page, there's nothing wrong with the videos being more comedy routines than reviews. That's not meant to be any sort of complaint or insult. Just an observation. Like I said, I've been watching these videos for years (since the Just Cause 2 video, to be specific) and continue to do so. If anything, it's a compliment. Video game reviews are a dime a dozen on KZread. What Yahtzee does is a bit more unique

TheKnight OfCydonia. You're entitled to your ignorance, buddy. Hellblade was great. Despite your unwarranted bigotry, Hellblade was a pleasant surprise and proved to be one of the best games I've played all year. In a market oversaturated with vapid shooters and 'games' chalked full of micro-transactions and disrespect for their player base (ie rainbow six seige and SWBF2). Hellblade comes from an indie dev studio and provided me with a compelling, narrative driven, linear game that left me feeling satisfied and fulfilled with my gaming experience. So shove your hate speech up your ass and kindly fuck off.

I mean the manufacturer, the trailers, because I actually find it kind of amusing how that move alone pretty much made everyone feel paranoia for something that wasn't real, like the game itself, but if people is gonna claim false publicity then I'm curious as to wether they actually sold it on a false point (like no man sky promising multiplayer) or if the false point was just content that game reviewers misinterpreted.

The story was pretty epic. All the time you think you're out to save the soul of your lover but the soul being saved is your own. Oh, and dealing with repressed memories of dear ol' daddy burning Senua's Mom alive was sort of dramatic as well. By the end she isn't cured by any means but she's at peace with the death of her lover and the voices aren't as loud, they're sort of background. Also, the actress who voiced and motion capped Senua was an absolute rookie as I understand it. Her first go at it was pretty well done IMO. Hopefully she'll continue to grow at doing such work and get better over time. The main thing that took me out of the game was the puzzles however. I didn't mind the idea behind them or anything but when I got stuck on one (several actually) I felt like I was wondering in circles and it just totally broke the game momentum for me. Also, the "permadeath" while a thing was something of a myth as I understand it. I died a LOT and I never had my progress erased. Great game overall IMO. One of the best of the year.

Great writing, as always, and most of it is spot on, yet... the game is actually pretty good. The narrative-gameplay aspect is at worst quite interesting, the matching puzzles start dull, but get occasionally even quite intriguing and support exploration well enough (graphics are beautiful)... and the combat is bare-bones simple yet feels good and fun... also the game is not too long, you can get through it in two reasonably long sittings, so not much point in getting annoyed by any of that... Yatzhee has some good points, but if you like the trailers, go for it anyway...

That's Scizophrenia. Paranoia is just a potential sign. It's like Bi-Polar and Autism in that one makes the other more probable but the two are different. Also they seem to have lumped in every mental illness ever. Like you either have every illness or you are normal. In a way it's the game taking a piss on mental illness, and you just telling it how badly it did. The problem is the games need to pick specific illnesses and know what the hell they are. Like how Psychonauts mixed Bi-Polar with BPD. Speaking of personality disorders it looks like we could make a joke that the game itself has HPD, which is not fine for me to say but then I remember I've got Exploitable AvPD and Selfless DPD along with regular Derealization episodes, so there is literally nothing I could do that I myself chose to do that I would not immediately regret or freak out about because everything is holes, so I'm doing it anyway. Also it was Metroid Prime 3. 2 was Dark Aether where they confused Dark Matter with Antimatter. I'd make an SJW joke about the number of matters but I just don't care anymore, and I have no idea what *matters*. ______________ \|||/ \|||/

Gave this game a go for an evening (about 2,5h) and I´m sad to say this video is pretty accurate so far.

I really liked this game, one of my favorites from this year. But I can see how not all people can enjoy it.

I feel like a review that doesn't mention the audio of this game does it a great disservice, the entire time you a re playing you are hearing voices from all around you, sometimes helpful sometimes trying to get you killed, for instance during combat they will tell you up when it is coming from your side. on top of that there are several voices occurring at the same time even further making in unsettling.

@@anneupfold8577 it is entirely psychosis, so honestly I'm not sure. I know allot is psychiatrists and people who have psychosis assisted in the development to try to make it as accurate as possible.
