Although I'm still not 100 percent sure I'll buy a swagman roll, this is a great demonstration and has convinced me of the advantages it provides. Let's just say I wouldn't be mad if one of these ended up under the Christmas tree this year.

This looks like a versatile piece of kit that could save your life or make camping much more comfortable at the very least. Always appreciate your historical knowledge on the products you review. Thank you John for your videos.

Love my swagman, use it mostly as a sleeping bag . Surprisingly warm. I often use it over another bag in colder weather including -4c under a tarp with a fire alongside.

Armin, If you are my stature or smaller (I'm 5'9", 200lbs) You'll be able to use all of it's functions and hopefully get as much use of it as I have. I have become aware of a "Basic" version which is less expensive, however I don't know much else about it. Just FYI. Thanks so much for commenting! I hope to hear from you again in the future!

Thank You Very Much Bruce! I believe there would be a huge market for PLUS Sized Swagman Rolls and Matching Ponchos. I am 5'9" and right at 200lbs., I'm not a big guy. I have camped with many friends that would love this thing but there is no way they could use all the features built in to it.

I watched Dave Canterbury and Cpl.'s Corner, and you give the Swagman high praise. That is saying something. I will let you know how it works out for me personally. I have a feeling I will love it. I never pulled the trigger on one of these before, because I thought it was to expensive for a fancy poncho liner. However, I do love the poncho liner. Great video.

Thank you Doug! I have gotten my money out of my Swagman Roll. I take it with me nearly every time I hit the woods. "IF" it were to sit in one of my gear cabinets for months at a time, yes, it is not a wise investment. There is a less expensive alternative available from Helikon-Tex, It's the Swagman Roll Basic.www.helikon-tex.com/en_eur/po-srb-po-swagman-roll-basic.html It lacks many of the features of the Swagman Roll and costs far less. I have no personal experience with it, so I have no opinion of it one way or the other. I hope you like your Swagman as much as I like mine. very informative john. really like your presentation style. yes, nylon + heat is not a good combination, as i found out ... a couple of home repairs later and my poncho is back - albeit not quite "as new" as before ... but lead to a fundamental learning experience. no other damage (luckily) - you live and learn. thanks for the excellent vlog.

Thank You! The poncho is one of the most versatile and multi purpose pieces of kit we can take to the woods. If you ever need to "spot" repair damaged water proofing to your poncho, Flex Seal works great. Just cut a stencil to the size you need and give it a spray. It cures in 24 hours. I am in complete agreement with you about living and learning! The things that I have learned the most from and have remedied have come from my MANY mistakes! Have a blessed and wonderful weekend!

I HONESTLY take this to the woods with me EVERY TIME I head out! There have been many times I have not "needed" to use it. However the times I did, It Was A God Send! It made the difference between an endurance and an enjoyable experience. As an insulation multiplier, It has been a true blessing! I do have issues with it. Things I would redesign but, I wouldn't trade it for anything! It's a keep'r! I hope you like yours as much as I like mine!

that is a well thought out piece of gear. i remember some guys had their poncho liners converted by mama-san with a head-slit. wish i had done that. ive got a couple old west german tanker's sleeping bags that are very similar. the bottoms unzip and you stick your legs out. i love them.

Oh, Mams-san!!!! Unfortunately, I was very backward coming from Appalachia. Had I spent a few more years in the Regular Army, I would have learned about the world beyond the gates. But in my defense, I was with the 194th Armored Brigade which was the spear point of the Army's rapid deployment force, so we spent about 70% of the year in the field training all over the United States, so, I didn't have much of a chance to learn of the sacred ways of the Army Jedi... Hahahahaaaa.... My buddy Dan Boucher, loaned me his German sleeping bag a couple times (I believe the one you mentioned) that had arms and center zip that allowed the user to unzip, stand up and fight. I Loved That Thing! That was the BOMB! I have no idea why they are being reproduced with modern tech. Seriously overlooked potential!

Thank you for the review, I agree with you. The sleeping bag width is narrow at 27 inches, and the front pocket needs a storm flap, but overall, it is fantastic. I actually take this with me to my hotel room, as an extra blanket.

Thanks for showing how to use it as a quilt using the straps. Ordered it. Should be good for nights of stargazing in the Swedish woods. My goal is to replace the sleeping bag (during summer), puffer jacket and blanket with only one item.

First of all, I need to apologize for the delay in replying to your comment, life has been crazy lately. I have used the swagman roll in every way except as a stand alone rain poncho. I will be testing the waterproofing this summer. I have used the Swagman so much that I would have to think it would affect the waterproof coating. I will find out soon and will post a follow-up to the review video. I personally would not use the Swagman as a stand alone sleeping bag in temperatures below 60 Degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius. However, it has served me well at temperatures above that. First of all Brother, I must apologize for the delay in my reply. Life has been incredibly hectic as of late. I'm with you on the Swagman Roll! I use it more than any of my sleeping bags. It goes with me nearly every time I hit the woods. I need to get a Helikon Tex poncho. The grommets have to be larger to accommodate the swagman toggles. I plan on doing a "Ranger Roll" video with various combinations here fairly soon. I have yet to see a negative review of the Swagman. Helikon, hit a homerun with it! Blessings Brother!

Mike, I sure will. I actually want to do a video on several times of bed rolls/ camp rolls and the like. When I was in the army, I used the components in different was depending on weather conditions, but I rarely kept it in a dedicated roll. I also always had an extra poncho in my pack. It was just too versatile piece of kit to just have one. Also, I apologize for the extremely late reply! Take care brother!

I would say Crye Precisions Lawyers slapped a cease and desist order on them. They continued to sell the "camogram" pattern for a good while in Europe and the UK after they stopped shipping "camogram" products to the U.S. I believe they are NOW manufacturing some products in licensed Crye Precision Multicam but not the swagman roll.

Great review, I just have one question: The Helikon Tex website states: "The roll is made of thin Nylon fabric, filled with one of the best insulating materials mankind ever dreamed of - the Climashield® Apex™" Seems to me they are stating that the insulating wadding is Climashield® Apex™. Why are you saying that Climashield is a DWR surface treatment on the outside of the shell?

Well done. There are some similar products out there. I have the Hill People gear equivalent called the mountain serape and there is a Finnish product that was modified from a Norwegian product called the Thermal Cloak made by Sarma TST. I have the thermal cloak as well. From your demonstration I have to admit the swagman roll appears to be a bit better kit than the mountain serape but the thermal cloak is something special that you may want to take a look at. It does it all but the camo patterns it comes in are for Scandinavian terrain but if you have the skills to create your own camo patterns you can change that. It does deserve a look see to see what others are up to on the other side of the world.

I just found the Thermal Cloak on Varusteleka.com . It really looks fantastic! The Summer pattern would definitely work where I live. I really like that you can purchase it in three levels of insulation and the dimensions are the most practical and useful of all the variants I've seen. I recently purchased 2 Osni's from Wilderness Innovations. Each in a different level of insulation. I still need to do more field trials with them, but as of now, I'm very impressed. I will see if Varusteleka will ship the Thermal Cloak to the U.S.. I tried to order a couple of Corinthia sleeping bags from them, however they do not ship them to the U.S.. Thanks for the tip! I am VERY Interested!!!

@@boonedockery7220 In your vid you mentioned how tight a fit the swagman roll was as a sleeping bag. You won't have that problem with the thermal cloak. I'm 6'5" and 250 and I have more than enough room using it as a bag, and it stuffs into a 10 liter stuff sack. You can order from Varusteleka and they will ship it fast to your door. If you want a carinthia bag, contact VERTEX OUTDOORS in Texas. There are licensing issues with carinthia that's why they won't ship to the USA anymore. The same factory that creates the carinthia bags makes the vertex bags. THEY ARE THE SAME BUT WITH AN ADDITIONAL XL OPTION. The Montana bag is the D4 bag made for Carinthia. And reasonably priced. I have one and can vouch for it!

I'm sorry for getting you in trouble with the Mrs.😊😄😆😉 Yes, I believe it is a Stream Lite designed for and issued to U.S. Forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is designed to clip into a "Fast" Ballistic helmet. I bought two at a mega low price to have dual headlights for my helmet (which I lost in the house fire, they are so expensive I haven't been able to replace it yet). It is a fantastic light and is really energy efficient with only a single AA Battery.

Fantastic Review Brother John, I would love to Own one, again being 6'3 240lbs I'm sure that I wouldn't be able to Zip it up all the way, as a sleeping bag, but for it having so many features, it's hard to say anything negative, my wife took a Tape Measure and Measured my shoulders from Left to Right and it was 36" What do you think, I should be able to use most of the Features, Is there any Other Products that are Bigger in size,that might work better, for a Bigger man or person, I love everything about the Swagman what a awesome Product, as always you informed me on how it work's I Thank you Brother for Sharing and taking out your Time.to help me understand the Pros and Cons. As always, Mo Rick, Thanks for commenting. Given your stature and the price of the Swagman Roll, I don't know if it would be worth the investment. If there was anyway you could try it out and return it without restocking fees you could try it. There is no way you could use it as a sleeping bag. Given the number of people of large frame that are in the military and bushcraft or wild camp, you would think Helikon-Tex would manufacture a larger Swagman and Poncho. It works as a poncho and extra blanket, but certainly not as a sleeping bag. It's too cramped, and it can't be particularly cold outside. If you think that you should save weight in the pack when you have both a poncho and a sleeping bag, it doesn't work. You must still bring a sleeping bag that you can fit in and that insulates better. Bring a sleeping bag and a warm annorack instead. I've tried taking mine on day trips, but it's so bulky that nothing else fits in the daypack. I use my Swagmans Roll indoors when it's chilly just because I paid for the crap, and have to wear it out.

Tiger Stripe Is Awesome! It's a bit too dark for my neck of the woods. The triple canopy jungles of Vietnam (or any dense jungle) were perfect areas for it. A good while back, a company actually produced the original Vietnam pattern in Multicam Colors. It looked pretty sweet and actually worked well when wearing it with the Crye Multicam.

A bit offtop but what anorak are you wearing here? PS I got somewhat soaked a couple times wearing the swagman and it held out well, I wouldn't risk it in a proper rainstorm but high humidity and passing showers didn't force me to put on the rain poncho so it's safe :) Until, of course, the coating wears off, these things don't last long, especially around areas that get rubbed a lot

I've seen all kinds of demos of folks pouring water on them but have never seen anyone actually wear them in even a drizzle of rain. David, if your using the Firedragon Fuel, gel or cubes, it will be like cooking with an alcohol stove with a simmer ring. The hotspot will be larger and a bit more sporadic depending on wind. If your cookpot/fry pan has a double walled bottom, it should distribute the heat better than a single wall. If your using a single wall, you'll just have to monitor it and move your food around a lot. I haven't used my Fire Dragon enough yet to do a proper review, but all of my thoughts on it so far are favorable. The fuel is pricey but it's really up to the consumer if it's unreasonable for them. I have a lot of videos on the list for the short term, but I'll try to work a good Fire Dragon cooking stove video in as soon as I can. Blessing!

Stephen, I'm sorry to tell you, but, that particular anorak has not been made for a very long time. I bought it from S.E.A.L.S. Action Gear (a Canadian Company) in excess of 15 years ago. At the time, very few company's were selling "Multicam Anything"! I just happened upon their website and bought several items from them. It's hard to believe that "Multicam" is twenty years old this year.

Paul, I bought it at least a couple years ago. Helikon-tex had already stopped importing the "Camogram" (their version of Multicam) pattern products to the U.S. by that point (I'm certain it had something to do with Crye Precision's mass litigation). I just happened to find them on Amazon. There were only a few available and I bought 2. One for myself and one for my buddy John. I checked again a few days later and they were sold out. That's the last time I saw them available in the U.S. . I just checked Helikon-Tex's EU website and they are now selling some items in "Official Crye MULTICAM" , however none of the Swagman products are available in Multicam. The last time I looked at their website there was nothing available in "Camogram, or Multicam". I don't understand why companies that are being served cease and desist orders from Crye are producing products in MPT or OCP? As far as I know , those patterns are free game? Oh well, this is my long answer to a simple question. Have a great day Paul!

The Swagman is advertised as being "Water Resistant" which means it has some form of DWR (durable water repellant) treatment. I have never tested it as any form of wet weather gear. I feel the importance of it's other uses justifies using it in conjunction with a regular poncho. DWRs wear off and need to be retreated. As standard practice, I retreat several items every year as I use them frequently.

You can wear it around the fire , you just throw the front part over your shoulder and to the rear ! you want the heat to radiate to your body (while your insulation blocks the cold from the rear) not your insulation cover ! same with whatever you are wearing around a fire !

This is definitely a product that had some short comings that should have resulted in additional products from Helikon-Tex. An extra large version, both versions with double insulation and an extra large poncho to pair with the extra large Swagman. IMHO...

Really worth the extra $70-80 over the USGI Woobie + Poncho?

I believe it is better than a USGI issued woobie. I would not use it as a stand alone poncho. Given the short comings of the swagman roll, I would not purchase it again. I would probable purchase the Swagman BASIC. The Swagman roll pairs up perfectly with a USGI Issue poncho.

This is Helikon-Tex's version of Multicam. They call it Camogram. Getting anything Camogram here in the states is next to impossible and even finding items in the UK and Europe is becoming more difficult.

I agree Brace! The camogram saga is a long one which has come to the current status... Helikon-Tex now produces several products in "LICENSED" Crye Precision Multicam. SADDLY, as of this point NOT the Swagman Roll... Contact them and let them know you want them to produce EVERYTHING in Multicam. That's what I did. No word back yet😊😊👍

why didnt they make this fantastic gear waterproof on one side? like their thermo blanket!

This is a great piece of gear i will soon use! but i understood it can withstand some rain.. i love Helikon OTP pants too, it truly became one of my favorites as per their slogan! i love your videos man, and all the multicam gear ! Fantastic! i got inspired by your video for the excllent workmanship of the osni model too.. does costs me importcosts but well worth it i guess.

@@boonedockery7220 can't seem to find a Multicam swagman roll here in the Netherlands though, let me look.. the osni provides a choosable double layer option which is amazing man! And that bag with all the other bags you emptied on the table in your other video.. love that stuff man!

It is a SEALs Action Gear Anorak Made in Canada about 15 years ago. It's unfortunately, no longer being produced.

They do not have that pattern anymore…

First of all Brother I need to apologize for the delay in replying to your comment, life has been crazy as of late. I will definitely check out the video asap. This summer I will try out the waterproofing of the Swagman myself. I have used my Swagman so much, the waterproof coating "Should" have been effected over time. I will find out soon. You did not spend 179 dollars on it did you . there is no possible justification for that kind of expenditure. 6 dollars for a used wool blanket that can get wet and still work. do you plan on being in any tactical situations ? the only thing you have to fear is the main stream media, not real life .funny how no Refugee that i have ever seen was wearing tactical gear . They must just not be prepared for a survival situation. Or they have with them the things they need and tactical gear will make you a target. Hmmm thanks for the video. 👍

Jarrod, to answer your "Question", NO, I did not spend $179.00 on the swagman roll. I own multiple wool blankets and even the surplus blankets I found 20+ years ago cost more than $6.00. I used wool blankets nearly exclusively for more than 20 years and I am very well acquainted with their benefits and short comings. I have enjoyed exploring the world of contemporary camping, hiking, bushcrafting, and wild camping gear. I LIKE Multicam! I will continue to seek out and try contemporary kit and if I can find it, It will be Multicam. I feel confident in my survival skills both modern and primitive. I did the primitive for a very long time and I had planned on revisiting it in future videos. I enjoy producing "potpourri" videos. A little of this, a little of that. I know not every video I produce will be received the same way by everyone and apparently, some are strongly disliked. I appreciate you taking time to comment on this video and I sincerely hope it in some way benefits the community. I hope you have a good evening and I look foreword to reading your future comments.

So to use a multifunctional piece of gear you need to be in a tactical situation ?? How does a multicam blanket/poncho make you a target durring a camping situation ???? refugees do not spend $179 on a glorified blanket , obviously they would put that money in more practical things. I have 6 swagman rolls in multiple colors , they are great pieces of gear and have come in handy many times, but they hardly a tactical tool. perhaps more tactiCOOL !! Wool blankets are great in cold weather but are heavy and over kill during the warmer months.

@@boonedockery7220 thank you sir you got me interested in the product. so i looked it up and I got sticker shock 😲 wool blankets at this time are 7.87 at harbor freight in stock looked it up 2.00 at goodwill 60 x 80 inch . I do not use either of them I'm in the oasis of freedom of northwest Florida .poncho insulation is for people who live above interstate 10 . I appreciate your reply and the work you put into the video.

I would say 60 degrees is it's lowest comfort temp for stand alone use ground camping. I like it as a top quilt and as a sleeping bag liner as an insulation multiplier. Since I published this video, I have acquired several similar items that are far superior.
