Helicopter Lesson: Airflow and Lift
In this basic lesson, I talk about the types of airflow experienced by a helicopter's rotor system and how they combine to generate lift. I had trouble understanding this beyond a superficial level at first, but it’s pretty straight-forward once you draw it all out.
The topics introduced here are:
- Relative wind
- Rotational relative wind
- Induced flow
- Resultant relative wind
- Angle of attack (AOA)
- Induced flow's effect on AOA
Hopefully this layered visualization approach is as helpful for you as it was for me. I’d love to hear from you in either case. Drop a comment, or click the thumbs up, thumbs down, or subscribe button. Thank you!

I’m working on learning the physics of helicopters for an application and this has been the best explanation of resultant relative wind out of all the videos I could find! Thank you
