I have a cabin near Helen and know the area well. 15 years ago it was a great place for adults to relax and enjoy the area and it was a little like a Bavarian town. You could find authentic German clocks, Tapestries, beer steins, etc. in the shops and the streets were not crowded. If you were a little tipsy, the police would take you back to your hotel but now they take you to their jail and DUI checkpoints are everywhere. The town has turned into a mass of rundown cheap T-shirt and trinket shops, overpriced poor quality food and families with wayward children. On the weekends, the road (only one main road) is bumper to bumper and the sidewalks are packed. Keep valuables close by because Helen is the #1 city for crime in Georgia. For those of us that knew what it once was, it is a shame to see what it has become. The Mrytle Beach of the mountains. The area is great, rent a cabin but avoid Helen unless it is early on a week day.

Really, wish we could have visit it back then. I know what you mean about the cheap shops, we did see a lot of those. The town is definitely looking rough in some areas as well. But it was worth checking out once. Thanks for watching!

Looks like you guys were in Helen during February? October is the time to hit Helen. Be prepared for the crowds, though. Helen’s Octoberfest is quite the attraction.

Thanks for watching! Yes they did serve breakfast they just serve the food from behind a counter. They were really nice!
