Heimaklettur Hike, Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland | Best Day Hike on the Westman Islands
The Heimaklettur Hike (Home Rock) is the best day hike in the Westman Islands of Iceland. This beautiful hike takes you up to the top of Heimaklettur for an amazing view over the island of Heimaey. If you only have one day in the Westman Islands, this is one of the best things to do.
You get a 360 view of the island. On a sunny day you can see all the way to the mainland. The Heimaklettur Hike takes about 2 hours to complete and is relatively easy aside from the chain holds, ropes and ladders. Don’t try this hike if you are afraid of heights or aren’t confident scrambling. Take 1L of water and a picnic to enjoy the views at the top.

Brilliant video, I was on Heimay during the summer and hiked up Eldfell but that mountain you did looks incredible. I’ll be going back and so want to do this hike.

I hope you do get the chance to go back and do it. The views from the top are so awesome. Plus I love me a good challenge, and the ladders and chains made it feel like an obstacle course!

An incredible archipelago just half an hour by boat from the mainland. We were there, in Heimaey, but as seniors we had it easy - we were sitting on a restaurant patio watching the mountain and tiny ants who were climbing it. Looking up, it did not appear so dangerous or demanding. Praise to anyone who went up and then down!

It was a great hike. Not to hard but definitely not for the faint of heart
Just did this hike today. Pretty muddy, slippery and treacherous near the top, but worth it for the fantastic views. Great video!

Great video and amazing view. I've never been there, but it seems like you had the best weather day of the year. I guess most of the time, this hike is pretty dangerous.

galbaum33 yeah we definitely had amazing weather. The entire time we were in Iceland we had sunshine. I don’t know how common that is, but it made hiking really spectacular

It’s just 2 hours total. It’s only 1.1 miles total. You can totally do it! 🙌🏻

I went in 2016, a local described it as having stairs going up. We walked up to the hike and I was like, those are called ladders where I’m from! I was too afraid of heights to attempt. Kudos to all that can!!

Depends on how fast you hike and how much time you take at the top. We did the whole thing in 2.5 hours with a nice picnic at the top. Have fun!

You take a ferry from Landeyjahofn. Make sure you book tickets in advance because they can sell out
