Heil PT 1000 Rear Loader: Heiberg Garbage & Recycling

Founded in 1947, Heiberg Garbage & Recycling has grown their operation from a single truck to 26 front/rear/side loaders and roll offs today. Over those 68 years Heiberg has constantly evolved, staying on the cutting edge of the most modern sanitation practices, all the while offering old-fashioned, bespoke service on a personal level in a way the giant faceless corporate mega-haulers simply can't match. (e.g. the walk up stops at 3:10 & 9:09) Such are the merits of a family owned and operated local company. Touring their facilities and meeting everyone who makes the operation tick quite literally gave me the warm fuzzies inside. It's no surprise they're doing so well in the Portland hauling market.
This vid came about rather serendipitously. Instead of my usual regime of actively seeking out trucks and haulers, I stumbled on this truck parked street side in the Northeast Portland neighborhood of Hollywood sometime in mid-July. Having spotted the Sterling's bloated face from a distance I couldn't resist a closer look. Of course out came the phone for a few snaps for the ol' Instagram, at which point the driver approached and asked what was up. What particularly piqued my interest was the shoulder can he was carrying. My usual spiel led to a few minutes of chatting, and an arrangement to ride along and film the following week.
I met up with Jimmy at one of his first stops of the day near Burnside & NE 28th. A series of stops took us up back into the Hollywood neighborhood I first saw the truck in, a trip to the Metro Central transfer station to dump, followed by a short cardboard route. The route consisted of 1 and 2 yard Heil-lift bins, the occasional roll cart, and two walk-up stops, both seen in the vid. (To the pedants out there Jimmy wasn't mixing streams, I just mixed clips when editing)
The Heil rear load container lift deserves mention. Like Gar-Wood's kick bar, Leach's packer chains, and City Tank's reeving winch, it was first developed by Heil to allow their hinged hopper Colectomatic design to handle dumpsters. Given the fact that the hopper sill on those packers moved with each cycle the Heil design couldn't rely on pivoting a container's trunnion bar about it as did everyone else. Instead the two arms engage the side handles of dumpsters so that it can be lifted and dumped into the hopper. You'll notice the handles consist of a piece of flat bar bent into an L-shape, with a small piece of rod serving as both the third side of the handle and the lift point of the container. 7:38 shows it pretty well. The design of these handles is actually prescribed in the ASNI container standard for 1-3 yard rear load bins. Although the Heil system has fallen out of favor elsewhere in the country Oregon remains a holdout, not sure why. Dealer support perhaps? It's important to note the Heil lift can be found on all makes of rear loaders, especially the Leach Alphas which Portland haulers have taken such a shine to.
The Heil PT 1000 packer is competent as ever, an evolution of the venerable Formula 4000. This one could use some adjustment of the engine speed up switch at the packer controls but otherwise is in excellent shape. Paired (as it often seems) with the “bloated” looking Sterling, renowned for its spacious cab interior. A shame they aren't built anymore, I particularly liked the look of the axle forward versions right at the end of the production run.
Thanks to Jimmy Heiberg and everyone else at Heiberg Garbage & Recycling. Shoutout to Heiberg's biggest fan Simon Barker. Filmed July 20th, 2015.

These Heil PT 1000s are pretty neat trucks. I was able to video one of these, also on a Sterling, run by Rizzo. These little things seem like they can pack a lot. Shoulder can was interesting too. Great editing, as usual!

This was very entertaining. It's good to see locally owned businesses doing this kin of friendly service. This reminds me of the trash service on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The trash companies are all family owned (except republic doing commercial in some areas) and the garbage man/woman is a known face in the community, who goes behind the houses or into the garage and leaves no garbage behind. Admittedly, a lot of these small companies do not recycle, but then again most residents with recycle pickup don't recycle everything or sometimes not at all. What is the "usual spiel" you give? Most of the drivers I talk to don't speak very good English and are pretty deaf from the loudness of the job, so I have to shout sentences like "I LIKE TRUCKS. IS IT OK IF I PUT YOU ON KZread?!" That's not to say every driver is like that or that there's anything wrong with anyone who doesn't speak English, it's just what I have to do. Anyways, this was an excellent video, this guy is the real deal.

+trashmonster26 Well Heiberg is no slouch when it comes to recycling, such matters are taken very seriously in Portland. Basically I say the same thing as you but without yelling lol. The thing is to get your point across without sounding like some wacko. Society dictates that people aren't supposed to like garbage trucks so people think we're legitimately crazy. Glad you liked the vid!

lol gotta love Jimmy's shirt. This video really changed my opinions of the PT1000, looks easy to run and definitely one of the better rear loaders on the market. Guess Culver City just doesn't take care of their 2 as much of they should as they don't compare to this at all. Absolutely loved the shoulder can, truly is a dying method of collection unfortunately. Even though I'm generally an automated person this video kept me hooked the whole time. nice video, straight to the favorites and fantastic editing!

I got so pumped to watch this after reading the description - I should've just hit the favourite button before pressing the play button! There's an awesome variety of shots in this video giving a look at more than the usual - you're actually making everyone else look bad lol - keep it up! If there's a way to get a viewer engaged into an RL video, it's to kick off with the packer chewing on some big boxes :P Also got me quickly familiar with the smooth engine sound I like very much, plus all the on and off rev kicks heard from 1:06 - might have been a flaw, but it was neat. Then came a walk-in service, all stages included, plus the (bonus) underground bins. After watching him carefully close the gate at 3:54, I was quietly thinking it would be a nice blooper if he hammered the can straight into the roof as he walked down those stairs :P You're right about how good these local companies are with the personal service; a walk-in is just a liability to a big hauler. Next thing we're in the cab making the journey to the tip - I imagine we'll see this in a number of your future uploads! I'll have to negatively critique your unloading video..... you didn't get him unscrewing the tailgate locks :O Nah I'm just joking! hehe One thing I love about the Heils is that when you raise the tailgate, everything slides straight out of the hopper if you open the sweep blade up. Whereas others you need to completely cycle the packer 1 or 2 times to clear the hopper, which still doesn't always do a thorough job. I was waiting for that close-up lifter shot at 7:55! I never realised this system was a Heil lift either! I always assumed it was just a euro version similar to a paladin, so I've learnt something today :D 8:47 is a favourite view of an RL packer, more so on a Heil for some reason, because you can see the sweeping process in the depths of the hopper. Anyway I think I've said everything I wanted to say... oh no almost forgot to mention you did a GOOD JOB! haha

+MitchellM15 Def a flaw with the engine speed up but it only takes a very simple adjustment to remedy the situation. I'm trying for as many unloading shots as possible but of course they can be tough to get. No one at the unloading sites is ever really happy to see a camera, paranoid if you ask me. Interesting point about the Heil, and something I never would have known not having run one. Thanks Mitch!

Great video George. Seems like a pretty reliable company to me with good customer service. Surprised they didn't use a bigger truck for both streams. Doesn't look like that single axel could hold a lot, but that clip of the truck unloading at the transfer station sure proved me wrong. Gotta love those classic underground containers @ 3:34. And as always, very cool ride along clips in the truck. Be sure to check out my latest vids too! Great work.

+SoCalGarbageTrucks Thanks! Heiberg is def a top notch operation. A mid-compaction 20 yard is good for 4-5 tons, 6 is pushing it. This truck and route came to be Heiberg's with the buyout of a smaller operation. Over time (maybe already done by now) the plan is to integrate this route in with their other front load work.

That's pretty cool how the one truck you run into from Heiberg turns out to be driven by the owner lol I'd say that's more than a coincidence! Just like what everyone else has said, the backyard service part was great. Professional stuff right there lol Turned out great. Another awesome transfer station shot, truck really ejected quickly. WXLL/RL adjacent to Jimmy's truck was a real beauty. Never heard of them though lol Surprised these guys bought out a smaller company since they themselves are pretty small. But I guess I shouldn't be too shocked since I can parallel that to UPW buying Olympic. Speaking of SoCal, do you think there are more haulers within LA County or Portland (and it's surrounding cities)? I remember reading that there were 21 companies that pick up [residential?] within Portland city limits alone. Awesome work George!

+WMmaster626 Yeah ejection was surprisingly (pleasantly) quick, no messing about. Can't remember who owns the Leach but I'll find out soon enough. Heiberg isn't all that small, everyone can't be like WM ;) Portland is much smaller so I'd guess fewer haulers. A big factor would be whether or not we count roll off / drop box companies. Thanks Aaron!

Great vid George! Really like this truck! Such a nice sound to the engine! Loved all those packing shots! What's their oldest truck in their yard? If it has an Allison HT740 (4 speed automatic), can you please get a few runs through the gears of the truck? I really want to hear an old truck from this company and whether the HT740 slips when shifting gears!

Whole time I was thinking (for the first? time) how much the packer reminds me of the old Compaction Systems rearloaders. one thing I liked in this video was that pleasing continuity at 2:41, some close up just in time for the more interesting part of the pack cycle. Also cool segments with the shoulder can. I'm amazed all you required was one day with the truck. Also can we stop to recognize how well Jimmy runs the packer? Would've done nothing different myself, and it's been awhile since I've thought that while watching a RL. What does Heiberg have in the way of FLs? (assuming they have any, seeing slots on some dumpsters). bc the "Heil lift" puts the container's lip deeper in the hopper, there's not just reduced spilling but what seems like better distribution throughout the hopper. This vid helped me get a couple practical reasons to favor it. Add that to the fact that I already thought the geometry of those angled arms looks cooler, and I now think it's a better system. Nice sneaky cut before the concluding drive-off, overall some of your best editing.

  • @georgewuzheer

+Trashman242 The shoulder can was what initially got me so excited about Heiberg's operation. Very retro. I imagine it helps that Jimmy's been slinging trash since he was like 2 or something. The newest front loaders are Wittke, then some later model Mammoths, and my favorite is a really really really cool old spare which I'm hoping they'll let me film before it gets scrapped. There were times the lift doesn't engage the handles fully, this setup takes a bit more care than the usual locking trunnion. There are sneaky cuts all over this vid, all over all my vids really, the fact that you noticed means I did a bad job. ;) But I suppose if anyone would notice it'd be you. Sincerest thanks for the comment. :) Oh and the compliment too, I'd say this is my favorite video so far.

Yet another amazing video from you. Excellent shooting and very very well edited. Not exactly the most unique truck but after this video it's sure easy to see why it's a new favorite in the Pacific Northwest. Like what Scott said, really cool how the Heil lift puts the dumpster deeper into the hopper and the obvious advantages that come with it. Kind of surprising it's not more popular for that reason. Though of course if it'll live on, it's gonna be in Oregon haha. Those underground cans were certainly unexpected and that whole shoulder can sequence was edited really professionally. Though did you have him go back with the empty can for the shot of him coming down the stairs? Haha. So were all of these DeYoung's stops, and was this their only truck (assuming this was theirs if I understood correctly)? The unloading segment was pretty perfect. Cool to see the same trash (cardboard boxes) we saw get packed in unloaded. Seemed like an abnormal amount of styrofoam too haha. Really like the RL that unloaded next to Jimmy (who evidently designs some really cool shirts) too, didn't realize that company had RLs. Anybody say anything to you at the transfer or just the typical weird looks? Haha. How do they handle the recycling at the walk-up stops? Just painfully get the carts down the stairs or try to fit it all in the shoulder can? So cool they use the shoulder can still and this definitely makes me admire Portland's franchising system. Seems to work extremely well and so amazing it gives all Portland's little haulers a chance in the system.

+Garbage Trucks AZ Thanks Christian. There was a lot of time that went into editing this one so I'm glad it was worth it. There were a few more underground bins at that stop so I had time to set up for the second shot. Yeah I guess DeYoung used to be way bigger back in the day but were down to a one truck operation when Heiberg bought them out. I actually saw the Heil a couple weeks before filming still in DeYoung signage while riding along with Gary in the EVO and made a mental note about looking up DeYoung's operation. As it turns out at that point Heiberg had just recently bought them out, the signage is only like a week old as seen here in the video. Looks sharp IMO. All that Styrofoam was from the stop at the beginning, a furniture store. Everything comes to the store shipped in boxes full of the stuff, IKEA this is not. In yet another example of superior customer service Heiberg only charges for the 2 yarder at the stop since all the extra Styrofoam set out doesn't really weigh anything. The likes of Republic would doubtless set out and 8 yarder and charge accordingly. I couldn't tell you the name of that company with the Alpha but I'd like to try and get some resi RL action, they seem like just the company to try for. I think there are one or two more Portland haulers with RLs instead of MSLs on residential. Some dude (the loader operator?) told us we needed prior arrangements or something but Jimmy talked his way out of it, but that just leaves me nervous about next time, whenever that may be lol. At the second walk up stop you'll notice a blue 32 gallon can for recycling, I assume it all gets put into the shoulder can. Those blue cans can also be found used for glass at commercial/apartment recycling stops.

+Garbage Trucks AZ Having now done walk up recycling stops at Cloudburst I can say getting the carts down the stairs isn't that bad. Either roll them down the stairs in front of you with one hand on the railing else lift and carry. Shouldering them is surprisingly comfortable. At the second walk up stop the 32 is for the separate glass.
