🛩️ Heewing T1 VTOL - Complete Step By Step Build And Programming Tutorial

Ғылым және технология

A complete step by step tutorial showing how to build a Heewing T1 VTOL RC plane. This tutorial also shows how to do all the programming in Ardupilot so that you can get the aircraft in the air with ease :)
For this build you will need:
A Heewing T1 PNP kit
A Heewing VTOL conversion kit
A Matek F405 VTOL flight controller
A Runcam Phoenix 2 Nano camera
A TBS Unify Pro Race 2 video transmitter
A TRUERC Singularity antenna
A TBS Crossfire Nano SE reciever
A Matek M8Q-5883 GPS/Compass
x2 30cm 20awg wire (one red, one black)
A 25x25cm heatsink
A 10cm XT60 lead
3D printed parts (link below)
You'll also need:
Thermal adhesive tape
Dupont crimps and connectors (various sizes)
Heatshrink
Gorilla heavy duty mounting tape
Uhu Por glue
Sticky backed velcro
Total build cost was around £500/$615
To do the programming you'll need the following free software:
Inav Configurator
Mission Planner
Blheli Suite
The 3d printed part files can be found here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:568...
If you're wondering why the GPS module (and GPS mount) changed part way through the video, that's because I originally installed the wrong module by mistake lol.
Shoutout to Windfpv for his Arduplane tutorial video. Without it I would have been lost lol

  • @gizfpv

    @gizfpv

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks man, hope the video helps 😊 The reason I've located the GPS above the FC, is because the VTX antenna is going through the hole at the back of the fuselage. If I put the GPS in that designinated area, there would be nowhere for the VTX antenna. There is method in my madness lol. I tried a lot of different configurations before settling on this design, but as you can see it works flawlessly 😊 Oh and incase you're wondering the reason why I didn't put the GPS in the compartment above the nose, is because I'm going to be mounting a HD camera there eventually

    Thank you for a great video. Finally I understand how Q_TILT_YAW_ANGLE works :-) . I think for tail motor direction is not important if you have right prop. Is 4S safe to use with these motors and ESCs? I afraid front ESCs will be over heated. According to me, CG should should be set for plane mode (motors forward), for quad mode it is not critical. If you had chance to tune, can you share PIDs for quad and plane, please? Thank you.

  • @gizfpv

    @gizfpv

    Жыл бұрын

    Yup, 4s seems to work fine. Haven't had any issues with motors or esc's overheating (at least not yet lol). Yeah CG should be set as normal, however it's not so critical to get right. From what I've read, CG is most critical for take offs and landings, but as this plane doesnt take off and land like a normal plane, CG can be a little off without it being a huge issue

  • @MrMartinRome

    Thank you for this video. Very helpful. Why did you decide to put the tail ESC on the boom and not just put it in the fuse?

  • @gizfpv

    @gizfpv

    Жыл бұрын

    Long story short, because there wasn't room to put it inside. My goal for this build was for it to be as 'clean' and tidy as possible, which is why I put the VTX under the FC, and the Rx under the GPS. I could have possibly just about fit the ESC at the back behind the VTX, but I was worried it might cause problems with the VTX or RX antenna. So yeah, stuck it on the tail. Does at least have the benefit of good cooling lol

  • @MrMartinRome

    @MrMartinRome

    @@gizfpv Thanks, I figured as much. I also figured you put the GPS in the back to avoid a long cable and potential interference from putting it in the nose. I am just getting started with the build and if it flies well, will put DJI in. I think a Vista can fit in a number of places.

    Great thorough build. Picked up on a number of useful tidbits in your assembly and configuration process. This HeeWing VTOL turned out great given this was one of the more complex builds to date. Can't recall if this was your first ArduPilot build/configuration or not. Excellent if it was, as appeared to be very seamless. ♥😎👍👍 Was amazed to see only 3.5-4A in wing'ed cruise flight, and 9.5-11A in VTO/hover. The transition however seemed a bit weird as jumped to almost 30A as transitioned and accelerated to hight speed cruise. Perhaps just default configuration for target transition cruise speed (?) .. more a concern if plan to fly with a li-ion pack. Wondering if the lower satellite count related to the TBS Rx being mounded directly below the GPS? Perhaps a square of metal foil tape applied before the sticking of of GPS/Rx in place would reduce potential RF noise?

  • @gizfpv

    @gizfpv

    Жыл бұрын

    Yup, this was my first ever Ardupilot build. It only seemed seamless due to the magic of video editing lol. As for the current draw in flight, I'm not sure what's going on there. The current definitely leaped a lot during transition, which doesnt seem right. The FC is calibrated using the current sensor scale direct from Matek though, so I don't know? The RX being directly beneath the GPS doesn't seem to make any noticable difference. They key thing is that the RX antenna is nowhere near the GPS. Still seem to be able to get a quick sat lock like normal

    In theory yes, you can use the F405 WSE for this plane. The only major difficulty you'd have would be soldering the ESC power wires. The F405 WSE only has pads for 2 sets of esc wires, but the VTOL has 3 ESC's. Wouldn't be impossible to solder all the wires to the FC, but would be tricky

    I have a couple of quick questions about your transmitter & receiver configuration in Steps 113, 114, and 115. First of all, absolutely amazing video. I have my T-1 Ranger VTOL airframe built, am getting ready to start soldering the F405-VTOL board today, and hope to be flying in a day or two. I see that you are using a TBS Tx & Rx. I am using a FlySky FS-i6 transmitter and a FlySky iBus receivery (not sBus on an FrSky, which needs to be inverted). Is anything in your guidance for Serial 6 setup in steps 113, 114, and 115 unique to your TBS setup, or should I enter them as you indicated? I can also use a standard PPM from my receiver to the FC if I need to. Thanks in advance!!

  • @gizfpv

    @gizfpv

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey man, glad you liked the video :) Unfortunately I've never used a Ibus receiver, so I can't be certain, but having just had a quick look at the F405 VTOL documenation online, it looks like you'd wire up the receiver to the RX2 pin on the FC, and then you'd change the code BRD_ALT_CONFIG = 0 (step 112). Apparently that's all you need to do (as far as I can tell) and you don't need to do steps 113, 114 or 115. However if it doesn't work, I'd try setting SERIAL6_PROTOCOL = 23 (step 115) and see if that works. I hope this helps, sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck :)

I may do more VTOL builds in the future though, will have to see. As for the CG, on the VTOL T1 CG isn't actually that important, just use the usual CG marker, but if you can't get it spot on it doesnt matter so much. As the aircraft takes off and lands vertically CG isn't such a issue as with a normal plane

    The wiring schematic on the Matek website is just an example of how wiring 'could' be done and isn't specific to this aircraft. You can wire up the motors/servo's to any output you want, it doesn't matter, so long as you tell Mission Planner. The servo outputs (position 1 - 16) shown on mission planner directly correspond to the actual board outputs (S1 -S10), so position 1=S1, position 2=S2 etc. Hope that clears it up for you :)

    @@gizfpv Thanks very much for the reply. I am getting overly complicated here, but someone else noted that the motors and servos cannot be mixed in the same timing group, and I think this is indicated on the ArduPilot Mapping tab on the Matek page for the F405-VTOL. Since the board has 4 motor pads and there is only one Group (Group 3) which has 4 servos (S5, S6, S7, S8) I think that is why the Matek wiring diagram shows the use of S5, S6, S7, S8 for the motors, all being in Timing Group 3. The reason why your connection of the motors to S1-4 is also OK might be that you didn't connect anything to S4 thus avoiding having a motor and a servo on the same timing group (S3 and S4 are both in Group 2).

One day I suddenly realized that you would never build a quad with different size propellers, they all need to be the same size. I put 3 same size props on and problem solved. I think what was happening was, ArduPlane compensated for the lack of thrust from the smaller prop and limited the thrust from the wing motors in order to hold the plane level.

    In what orientation is your GPS mounted inside the aircraft? It may simply be that your module is orientated in a different direction to how I mounted mine, which would explain why you're seeing a different orientation value. The important question is, does the compass appear to work properly? You can check it on the DATA page in mission planner - just move the aircraft around and see if the compass data on the HUD correctly points north, south etc. If it does then you're all good, don't worry about the orientation value being slightly different :)

Just set it up as a flight mode, switch into it while at your preferred cruise speed, and spend some time banging the roll stick from one side to the other, then bang the pitch forward and back, then switch out of auto tune mode and you’re done. (This will work best if you get a good mechanical tune first by flying straight and level in a stabilized mode at your preferred cruising speed and then watching its behavior when you switch into manual mode without touching the sticks - if it suddenly pitches or rolls, then you land the plane, adjust the servo throws to compensate for that behavior, and try it again. When it behaves roughly the same when you switch into manual, that means the FC isn’t having to work to compensate for bad mechanicals, and that will let you get the most out of an auto tune). It's complicated to explain but basically it's due to the way Ardupilot programming works. Long story short, S4 can't be used to control a servo because S3 is being used to control a motor. Ardupilot puts the outputs into groups (S1+S2=group 1, S3+S4=group 2 etc) and you cant mix motor and servo outputs together in a group.
