Hee Wing T1-Ranger Overview and Maiden Flight

    Glad you are liking the T1. Flying buddies and I all agree it is a brilliant little aircraft. Last weekend we had a good test of it’s abilities in hilly windy terrain. Very controllable and quite manoeuvrable in gusty wind. Tough also, as I smacked a metal gate with little or no real damage. T1 is quickly becoming a group favourite!

    check the motor mounts, I lost a motor mid air and found mine didn't have the gasket behind the mount that stops the screws pulling through. Heewing sent me a replacement motor and mounts with the gaskets. They said there's been 3 versions, the first had no gasket and a different mount, the second has the new mount and no gasket and the last one has the gasket and new mount, I had the 2nd release.

    Interesting! I knew there was an early version of motor mounting that tended to fail and pull the screws through, but didn't know there was two after that... lol I opened mine up and saw 4 screws each side rather than two, with a rather broad head on them. I didn't see a "gasket" of any sort, but wasn't looking for it either. Maybe I'll look again... Either way I'll be sure to keep an eye on them. lol

    Glad to see you went ahead and got a T1. It's a great little plane, just so easy to fly. Little tip though: put a bit of heatshrink on the canopy clasp (the bit the grabs onto to the spar) as it'll quite quickly get a bit loose and you'll risk losing your canopy and Thumb Pro

    Yeah it doesn't feel super secure already... lol Probably fine for the canopy, but with the camera up there I wouldn't try too many negative G maneuvers. ;) I don't think the Thumb will stay on there long, I want to try to build it into a somewhat compact pan/tilt for a larger plane to see how it works there.

    Nice build. It's important that air exit holes are at least as large as the intake holes or else you'll be increasing air pressure inside which leads to lower than expected readings by the barometer sensor. Have you tried temporarily clamping a choke on the pan servo cable where it enters the servo? If that works, then you can try the choke around the signal cable only, and if that works, then you can solder some SMD inductor inline with the servo cable and that jitter problem will be fixed. If you add a 12g MG pan servo, then you can put a Caddx Peanut upright on it and make it pan in sync with the FPV camera. I think that'll look cool. I'm going to try soldering a dummy WS2811 IC (without LED) in-line with one of the LED wires when I get around to building mine. Some things I may also do is add a rudder later with a 5g or less servo, and place the aileron servos on the top of the wings because I fly in the desert where everything is rough and soft green grass is non-existent and I don't want the horns to get hooked on anything.

  • @bonafidepirate

    In my case the airspeed is set up to work without a sensor, or "synthetic" as they call it. (estimated based on other sensors) It's just the OSD that's wrong, I have the OSD item showing data from the first airspeed sensor, which isn't present... lol I need to use this one, "OSD1_ASPEED_EN" but instead I enabled "OSD1_ASPD1_EN". Simple mistake! lol

  • @bonafidepirate

    Yeah that camera placement is just an afterthought. If it had arrived before I built the plane up I probably would have mounted the FPV cam in the nose where it was meant to be, and the HD cam on top at the front of the nose. As it is, I wanted it near the CG so when I move it to another plane later it won't change much. ;) It also lets me see the plane moving around in the video after running it through Gyroflow. I've been playing around with that today, somewhat impressed for what it is. Overall the camera is what I'd call "good", but not "excellent". Plenty good for the price though. I've certainly seen better from the Peanut and Insta360Go. Those cost a lot more though, to be fair. lol Maybe after some tweaks this one will look better. I'll certainly try it on a pan/tilt mount of some sort in the future. I was thinking it would have a nice unobstructed view in the nose of the AR Pro as well.

    I do have a 3S pack of 21700s, they're 5300mAh Vapcells, I forget the C rating but it's pretty high from what I recall. It will fit if I remove the battery tray (could possibly design a new one that will work, not sure if there's room). I actually thought about moving the Crossfire receiver to the tail so I can run more power for telemetry without affecting other electronics in the front. On the last flight though, just using CRSF instead of Mavlink, and doing Mavlink emulation on the ground for one-way telemetry, I had a good solid link out to 4 miles with telemetry at 25mW. I'll probably just fly this for a bit, then when I get board I'll put it back on the workbench to let it evolve... lol

    Great maiden, from launch to landing was flying real nice. A real clean build. Love the upper deck installed over the FC for the GPS, etc. Nice upgrades with the tail-boom, pan-servo and LEDs. Appreciate the tip on 1 vs 2 ordering of LEDs. If run a 5V down the boom, you might be able to alternately fin-mount the Thumb Pro. (or tap-in off the rear servo power) Regarding the pan-servo jitter. The length of wire run from FC to the servo is similar to 900 MHz antenna. You could try adding some shielding to that servo (copper, or aluminum foil, then heat shrink, or tape over the shield so no worries of it touching conductive components) Regarding Crossfire: better MavLink support and telemetry are in the works (maybe a fall release, but they moving business locations, so timing could be impacted). See "TBS COUCH - Goodbye Agent X" live chat at appox from 1 hour 7 min. MavLink connection may not pass thru if emulation is on and using UDP.

  • @bonafidepirate

    @bonafidepirate

    Жыл бұрын

    I could try shielding the cable, though it's twisted already. Some of these old servos just don't work well around 900MHz, I'm pretty sure I haven't used one of these HXT500s on a 900MHz plane before this one. I might even replace the servo later if all else fails, I just used what I had on hand. I tried it with the extended PWM range for 180º and it worked, so I used it.

  • @bonafidepirate

    @bonafidepirate

    Жыл бұрын

    My understanding is that you only NEED 150Hz while downloading parameters, but once that's done the standard Mavlink data should still get through 50Hz mode, albeit at a slower rate. That may not be accurate though, I know there's a few mistakes and discrepancies in the Crossfire manual and things change in firmware quicker than in the manual sometimes... lol I do know that in 50Hz mode bandwidth for telemetry is reduced and it will discard packages too. If that is the problem (I'm pretty sure it is), then the idea of a full Mavlink "tunnel" through Crossfire is not going to work for me anyway. The range in 150Hz mode is not enough to do what I want with the link to Mission Planner. (live tuning of parameters while flying and testing, such as I've done in the past with Dragonlink) I think I'll just scrap the idea for now, switch back to CRSF protocol between the FC and Rx, and use Mavlink emulation in the Crossfire Tx over WiFi to MP, so I can at least track it on the map until CRSF telemetry drops out. I think that will be a bit more robust and functional. At least in theory! lol
