Hedeby/Haithabu
Фильм және анимация
Animation by Jesper Østergaard from Groth-Østergaard Animation.
Hedeby / Haithabu were the largest and most important city of Denmark in the Viking age. It was situated in the Southernmost part of Jutland, which today is in Germany. The city was situated close to many of that periods most important transportation systems. That gave Hedeby a central role in European trade, and there was a vivid exchange of both goods and culture. Christianity and paganism lived side by side in this city, to which merchants traveled to from near and far to trade a.o. fur, pottery and slaves.

Прекрасно как
This piece is currently shown at the Haithabu exhibition at Borgcentret in Vordingborg, Denmark.
It would be amazing if they would rebuild the whole town of Haithabu.

They are rebuilding parts of it. I live very close and was there many times as a child. It's amazing, they find out new things and dig out new artefacts each year.

Väldigt detaljerad och välgjord. Love this kind of history
I would love to go back and be walking around this old viking trading town. Look inside the buildings too.

Love and support

@@groth-stergaardanimation8423 Hej Jesper.

stop saying that was Denmark in the Viking age, there wasn't Denmark!! Haithabu was a village in Jutland, it was only a territory... And now it's Germany. So we can't say Vikings were born in Germany or Denmark but in Jutland...

Saxons / Germans has populated the area times after. That’s also why it lead to border conflict between Germany and Denmark later on in mid 1800s. It’s very wrong to say vikings were Germans or Saxons 😄. This town was a Danish town. It’s all recorded many places. The name is old Norse and Hedeby is in modern Danish. Hedeby = “Moor town” Hedeby was like the trading hub between vikings and Western Europe.

@@saibot7218 Hedeby (Haithabu) was on the border between the countrys of the Saxons and the Angles. When Hedeby was founded around 770, there was neither Denmark nor Germany. Denmark was only founded in 990 and the German HRE only in 1184.

@@saibot7218 There were no Viking tribes. Viking is the name for Norse seafarers. They belonged to different Norse tribes. Vikings were seafarers from Jutland, Anglia, northern Saxony and what is now Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The borders between the ethnic groups were fluid. Ascribing a national identity to the seafarers (Vikings) from these areas is absolute nonsense. Nordic countries with fixed borders and kings, princes, etc. only emerged after the Viking Age.
i think it was destroyed by Slavic vikings no ?
@callsigndd9ls897
Жыл бұрын
No, it wasn't the Slavs. Haithabu was destroyed by fire in 1050. Hedeby's existence ended when King Harald the Hard of Norway attacked Haithabu and burned the city down a second time in 1066. Haithabu was then abandoned and re-established a few kilometers further north. This "new" city is called Schleswig.

@@callsigndd9ls897 In 1066 the town was sacked and burned by West Slavs.[18] Following the destruction, Hedeby was slowly abandoned. People moved across the Schlei inlet, which separates the two peninsulas of Angeln and Schwansen, and founded the town of Schleswig.

@@holextv5595 How do you know it was the Slavs? According to my history books, it was King Harald the Hard of Norway who was the last to destroy Hedeby (Haithabu). Slavic tribes such as the Wagrii lived further north-east in present-day Holstein at this time and had already largely assimilated with the Saxon tribes. In addition, the Viking Age was already drawing to a close in 1066 and new forms of trade such as the Hanseatic League began to develop.

Even more late, but I would definitely recommend to anybody interested to check a DLC for M&B called Viking Conquest. Regarding the topic, unfortunately Hedeby is represented only as a small fort there, but the port-city of Ribe is very similar to the reconstruction presented here.
