Hecate's parents are both very interesting deities as well. Her father was Perses, the Titan of Destruction, who is also called the wisest of all men and a loving husband. Go figure. Her mother was Asteria, the Titaness of the Stars, who turned herself into the island of Delos to stop Zeus from assaulting her and defied Hera by letting her sister, Leto, give birth on her, even calling her out for inflicting that kind of pain on another woman.

Astraeus also fathered the 4 winds (Zephyr is one of them) and the 5 planets (not named after Jupiter, Hermes, etc btw) He is basically the Titan god of astrology, stars, planets, and the winds.

When you dig into the actual mythology you will very quickly start to find a lot of minor gods who are barely mentioned elsewhere and have almost no information on them

Makes you think. Both Hecate, and I just saw someone else's comment referencing Saga, a very important Aesir goddess we know very little about, reminds me of a concept that I've seen elsewhere. In Overly Sarcastic Productions' video on Quetzalcoatl, they explain that very important deities can sometimes show up very scarcely in the mythological record because they were **so** important, **so** culturally pervasive that it was seen as unnecessary to write a lot of their stories down, since it may have been considered common knowledge to that society. Not that it's a guarantee that Hecate and Saga also fit that bill, I'm definitely not an expert in mythology, but it really makes you wonder just how much contextual information has been lost to time and which other deities we might really be missing out on.

​@@SCP_Wandsman13_13We have statues and temples that seem to prove which gods were more popular (>although even that can be tricky... for instance, Hestia is very much one of the most universally beloved and vemerated goddesses, but mainly in domestic cult, without temples or statues)

She also randomly appears in the Scottish Play as the witches' boss but the scene is nearly always cut in stage productions.

I have a theory that somehow Hecate is connected to Cerberus. The snakes, the dogs, the three heads, the protection, the underworld association, the crossroads bit since Cerberus guards the entrance to the underworld, lots of oddly similar notes and yet nothing substantial tying them together mythologically

Your gnosis is probably right. So many historical records were destroyed by Abrahamists that in reality we know next to nothing about many of our old Gods and Goddesses, so building a modern mythology on the basis of personal gnosis becomes even more important in understanding them and filling in the grey areas. Remember all of the ancient texts were essentially just people writing down their own gnosis.

@@cultofthevoid5677 there was another mythological mention that got my brain turning, basically I think when Heracles was wrestling Cerberus for the 12 labors, Cerberus vomited up some bile onto the ground and from that bile grew the plant Aconite, aka Wolfsbane, one of the very witchy plants sacred to Hecate. There’s too many extant connections for me not to think Cerberus was gifted to Hades by Hecate

Nice, i first heard about Hecate when i read some lore from FGO (where Hecatia is described as Medeas and Circes teacher). I cant say for sure, but the way Hecatia switches her three globes in Touhou reminds me of how Hecate has some dominion over land, sea and air.

Hell yeah another Touhou fan!! Clownpiece was also inspired by Lampades which explains why she works for Hecatia. lol Also ZUN even said that Hecatia is above everyone in both Gensokyo and the moon. The most powerful girl.

Hecate reminds me slightly of a Tagalog god I know named Lakapati, who was hailed as a hermaphrodite god/goddess of compassion and fertility who was prayed to regularly for good fortune, prosperity, and even the protection of families, but would later be branded demonic by Catholic authorities. I'm not saying that's what happened here, but it's possible the difference of a few hundred years was enough to repaint her as something terrifying to a new order that might've favoured different gods for political reasons and not the cool goddess who was relevant to most aspects of daily life but was also kinda spooky.

In case anyone was wondering about her Ferret and Dog, they were actually important characters in the mythology before being turned into animals. The Ferret was a woman named Galinthias who was turned into a Ferret by Hera. The reason for this punishment is actually kind of cartoonish, but basically Hera told Ilithyia (E-lee-thee-uh) the goddess(es) of childbirth to prevent Herakles from being born. Galinthias tricks Ilithyia by telling her that the baby had already been born by the will of Zeus and everyone just straight up stopped worshipping her because of it. It's not really set in stone who turned Galinthias into the weasel but most versions agree on Hera but others say it was Ilithyia or even the Moirai depending on the telling. Without Galinthias, Herakles would not have been born and Alcmene (Herakles' mother) would have died in childbirth. The Dog was the Trojan Queen named Hecuba. Hecuba isn't really the most important character but just the fact that she's the Queen of Troy, the mother to Hector and Paris, and wife of Priam, the last king of Troy gives her enough importance to be even somewhat relevant. It is said that Hecuba was about to throw herself into the sea as Troy was burning but that Hekate took pity on her, turning her into a dog and one of her familiars.

Hectate has been one of my favourate godesses for a very long time so its very nice to see her get a glimpse of the spotlight in this video! Also if you like Hecate and cool stories about plants and Greek mythology. I highly sugguest you read the: This poison heart series. Its very well written and not that lengthy if your not an heavy reader.

I’m not sure if the pose and outfit colors you gave Hacate is meant to reference Hecatia from Touhou or not lol. But regardless, a very well done video! I’ve always wanted to learn more about her.

Something im always curious about is why authors/translators could never agree whether Hecate was with a 'C' or a 'K', ive seen Cerberus very rarely written with K but most translations I've seen have 'C'

Having a K, pronounced with a hard "k" sound is closer to the original Greek pronunciation. The latinised forms of Greek names replace the Ks with Cs, and the pronunciation sometimes (but not always) changes to a soft "s" sound, like with Cerberus (instead of the more accurate, "Kerberos"). I kind of hate being nitpicky about spelling and pronunciation. So I just go with whatever pronunciation is most popular among English speakers, which are usually the latinised versions. But there are exceptions, like with Kratos, who's latinised form is "Cratus", but the other version is more popular.

Hecate's characterizations kind of resonate with Santa Muerete's. Both of them are seen as creepy endowers of evil magic by outsiders. But both are also seen as benevolent maternal granters of wishes by their worshippers.

I work with Hekate as a Lilith like figure in conjunction with Lucifer. It also works well in the Greco-Roman pantheon since Diana (Hecate's Roman Equivalent) was always lusting after Lucifer who was also the Roman God of Venus. Hekate was basically the greek mythological equivalent of a biblically accurate angel.

Hecate was a very important and powerful Goddess of the Hellenic religion! First, her name in Hellenic is Εκάτη and it’s pronounced Ekáti. In English it became Hecate which many people mispronounce… Now, we call Hecate a Goddess but in reality she was a Titanid, a female Titan. In the Hellenic religion we called Gods only the third generation of divine deities living at Olympus! At the beginning nothing existed. Only Nyx (Night) Chaos (chaos…) and Erebus (darkness) These deities existed before the cosmos came into existence. At some point they gave birth to the second generation of divine deities called *Primordial deities* Gaia (Earth) Uranus (Sky) Iméra (Day) Pontus (Sea)… etc These deities gave birth to the third generation called *Titans* Cronus, Rèa, Oceanus, Phoebe, Hyperion, Iapetus, Mnemosyne, Atlas, Hecate, Prometheus, Helios, Selene… etc Cronus and Rèa’s children were the fourth and final generations of deities called Olympian Gods. In Titanomachy some Titans helped the Olympians and when Zeus became the King of the Gods and the mortals, he allowed them to keep living in the world without being punished like the others! Hecate was known for being the Goddess of magic but not only that! She was the Goddess of the necromancy, magic, healing, herbs and healing through herbs and botanical therapies. She was also the Goddess of the Crossroads meaning that she was protector of the travellers. She was worshiped (especially in Thrace) as the grantor of good fortune! They believed that if you prayed to her, one could win wars with her help. Hecate didn’t lived at Olympus with the rest of the Gods. She was roaming the forests of Rhodope at the birthplace Thrace!🇬🇷 Hecate was believed to be born in Thrace and Thracians respected her massively!

A triple crossroads would be the point where twelve roads meet. I would assume the ancient Greeks had in general more three way junctions, so that is why Hecate became three faced (and headed and bodied).

My introduction to Hecate as a part of mythology was when we performed “The Bard’s Play” in middle school… It’s been over ten years since I performed any lines from that on a stage. I’m not THAT superstitious, but I stopped the video during the spooky reading part, which I listened to but didn’t take in a single word bc I was stuck in my memories 😖

In English class, I learnt about Hecate from the play MacBeth and how we never read that part of play as our teacher stated that it's up in the air if Shakespeare actually wrote her part in the story or if it was added later on by an unknown writer. So yea, there's no wonder there's not much info on her, but I hope we can find some more, some day.

Aside from Hecate, there’s also the sorceress named Circe. Some also refer her as the Goddess of Sorcery and Magic.

more fun facts: Hecate may be the source of the name Catherine via ancient greek Aikaterine (which was then confused with the greek word katheros in the middle ages, which is where we get the 'h' and lost the first syllable)

I'm one of the proud fans of pre-greek mythology Protogenoi and titans are in my opinion far more interesting than standard myths. Let's take the Perses as an example - the titan of destruction, whom even Zeus simped over.

She is maybe a god from the civilization befor ancient Greece (Mycenaen) since she has a big role with persephone, which is also feared by some and worshiped by others and since I believe reds (osp) head canon, that persephone is Despoinai (aka. the mistress ) and since Hecate is sometimes seen as a tectonic deity and Mycenaen mythology favored them, it could be that her relevance started their, or maybe she's an offshoot of Despoinai together with Persephone, who knows? In the end a lot got lost in the age between Mycenaen and Greece and we lack a whole lot of context clues. Maybe she is just a local goddess but because of some conflict she got vilified like Kreta with their bull religion and the Minotaur.

I confess I've watched the sponsored piece where you tell why you've picked the defender hero way too many times: how can you say something like that and keep such a straight face? #punIntended loved it haha

I may not be 100% correct in this but I know Hecate is worshiped in Peganism and a lot of old religions, witchcraft and alike. Maybe the time lapse is just from differences in how her role is perceived/ what she did to help those specific gods from Greek or other mythologies.
