"When Moses asked God what His name was God replied, “I AM that I AM “or as the Israelites say it, “I will be what I will be”.
Exodus 3:14 (NKJV) 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Traditionally, we are told that the first time anyone knew the name of God was when Moses saw a bush that is burning but not consumed. When he turns aside to see this great thing he meets the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, for the first time. God tells Moses to go to Egypt and talk to Pharaoh and tell him to let the Israelites go free.
Exodus 3:13-15 (NKJV) 13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.’ ” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’
By tradition, we have been told that THIS is the first time we are told what God’s real name is, that His name is I AM. However, that is incorrect.
I AM in this scripture is the Hebrew letters h a y a which is the Strongs number h1961. This is defined as to exist, to be or to become. H1961 is compared to 1933 which is defined as to breathe; to be (in the sense of existence).
The I AM in verse 14 describes who God is but doesn’t spell His name because the letters are h a y a.
However, in verse 15, we see the capital letters L O R D God. This is Yehovah which is God’s name.
