Very very sketchy paddle out! Foam couldnt sense direction or see if sets were approaching and just hearing 5 surfers died in neatherlands last year getting stuck in foam! Anyway we made it through into keyhole and what a spokfest stuck in down drafts of boils in the water felt like it wanted to pull you down below while you paddled, meanwhile large sets approaching. After that session turned alright but all in all not a safe session lol rescue would have been near impossible if injury was sustained, we kept it safe as we could!

Going out on a cold and wild day like that, at a rarely surfed slab, with the sketchiest paddle out, not knowing any line ups and then somehow finding some makeable gems…….truly world-class and had me glued to my seat!

@@shorebreak69 agree there was definitely a strong rip along the channels in the reef, but there were some solid sets and some dry reef slab sections that you would definitely want to avoid 😮 I love some of those slab waves down your way, so many good setups👌

Nate's assessment at the end of the video was SPOT ON! The rip at the place where he paddled out, is what made that paddle out possible. But, that same rip would have made it impossible to get in!

@@joegibbs2508 Totally agree. 💯 Trying to come in there would've been an absolute nightmare! Didn't exactly look that friendly where they did end up coming in either! 😬🤣 And no doubt that paddle out, whilst ultimately not particularly difficult, woulda been seriously intense! All that water moving and energy in the water. Pretty much just at the mercy of the rip there. Definitely not for the feint of heart! Hellmen only!! 🤙

It's amazing. I just turned 60 two days ago, but it's not like this safety first/paranoid/pussy? attitude started then. I grew up at the Wedge, surfed all over California including the Red Triangle (alone many times) since I was 10, been all over Hawaii, including the North Shore seven times. Now I go to higher elevation in both of my houses to check for sharks before going in to my swimming pools. I didn't over do it with the drugs and alcohol. Is getting smarter (more aware of all the possible trouble), dumber? Is it that you realize that there is a subtle art to staying alive, because you are reminded everyday than many don't. So as a result you gain a greater sense of self-respect and/or self-preservation? I've been to the Wedge four times in the last three weeks and it didn't cross my mind for one second to go in the ocean. I will never admit to writing this. Thank you, Pastor

Mate, in the mid 50s club and felt the same way. Back in my 20s I may have considered it but now as a dad, I'm glad others are keen - and strong enough to give it a shot, just not this guy. Does make me want to spend more time in the surf though. Living in Sydney I have no excuses! Cheers - Dave
Mad respect to both of you especially the 17 yr old charger!! Well done making it out alive and unharmed
I really appreciate the style of these videos. It's refreshing to watch a light edit where you can get a sense of being in these situations. Everything from checking the place, the paddle out, the good, bad and ugly of the session, and the paddle in. Keep 'em coming. Thanks!
The foam, the cold, the heaviness of that wave, and just the sheer ugliness of it all should scream “unsurfable”. Yet you and that 17 y/o paddled straight out and charged it. It’s insane to see how comfortable you looked backdooring those slabs. Props to you and Ben for even just getting out there, you’re a huge inspiration for so many folks 🙌

So sick!!! You guys are insane! Tell that grom he didn't need to catch a wave. Mad respect for just paddling out💪💪🤙
This is where you realize how good Nate is. And with the GoPro in mouth
Ben's duckdives were scary to watch! Those unneeded duckdives could be exchanged for precious paddle time! If you can paddle over the wave with momentum it is always better no? As you end up getting an extra stroke or two in. Nathan maybe you could do a vlog on when to duckdive vs paddle over? how to be efficient on the paddle out? Glad everyone is safe looked like the stakes were high
Damn ancient staircase ! Dinosaurs Cross here should be posted on signage... Lol Great commentary "what the fookman " !😱
Maaaacho, right on brother way to go, is he the first to surf there
This is possibly my favorite video of yours. You tricked me with the title thinking that you didn't even get to surf it, and yet you ruled it. More Slab Tour please.🙏 You are a natural in these conditions and these are the most exciting surf videos to watch ever.
Nate is a True Waterman from Hawaii! That's the Main reason he would even go out here. To me its a Lot of Work for a Meh Wave. If you want Really Sick Waves in Scotland go to Thurso! On the Right Conditions its World Class! I filmed there in 2003. Thanks Nate and Mahina for the Video.
Loved this Nate, I’m a surfer in Scotland but never confronted a slab of such ferocity, fair play to you and Ben!
You’re a freaking legend. This had me with my eyebrows up like watching with more intensity than any horror film 😂

Right from the start i like the perspective of the ocean then it pans over to you two about to paddle out to that beast. Really gives it depth and feel. Good job Nathan, as always!

I love how Nathan was super cool about giving Ben Stoke for just getting out there. It looked gnarly and just the 2 of you

Brilliant video, one of the best I've seen in many decades. It really gives a sense of what the session was like. Full marks to the boys, most surfers wouldn't even get wet in conditions like that. Nice looking boards.
Never met you, but after watching so many of your videos I worry for you like a brother or a son. Stay strong and keep it safe out there!

One of THE gnarliest vids I've ever seen. So exciting to watch!! Makes me remember that a huge part of surfing is testing your ability against the elements and controlling what you do in heavy situations. Not only wave reading. But, looking over the whole environment out there, and seeing where the rips are, and how to use them for an advantage. Then his assessment at the end, where he said the rip would have prevented them from being able to paddle in, showed his knowledge of the ocean. Spot on!!!

Wow! Just that foam section...! It really takes a lifelong experience to paddle out in this conditions! Props to Nathan and the young guy!
Great video, captures the severity of the conditions and the wave, brings back memories of surfing Thurso in the depths of winter back in the 90s with mates, drizzling and grey every day but a beautiful coast. Top
So cool you are videoing in a new surf country!! 🐑🐑🐏 Looked dicey paddling out seems like a floation vest would be advisable. Fun wave to surf!! 🌊🌊🌊 Thanks Nathan for a Scottish surf vid!!!
even the paddle out was riveting!
Great surfing! Its very beautiful in Scotland. I've been to Scotland two different times all the way from kalapana. A total of 4 months in all. Swam and body surfed everyday, a different island or location every week. Even got opihi there in the Hebrides. But this is too good. Scary good. Get one for me
So hectic! As if that slab isn’t dangerous enough when it’s clean. It speaks to Nate’s extraordinary skill that he scored proper gurners despite the raging cauldron.
That Nathan could make that wave look so good is a testament to how good he is. Holy shit
wow.... well impressed with that paddle out... fitness levels must be huge, big bottle too, looked gnarly. nice one guys
How impressive was that Grom he never gave up paddled for 7 minutes in a washing machine well done lad 🤙🏻😎

thanks for not putting in the over dramatic music on top, it was nice to hear the scottish locals swearing at the obsurdity
Nice video Nate! I know the sea foam at the entry in this instance is just comical, but it reminds me of some Dutch surfers who drowned a few years back when they got caught up in some foam that was a couple of meters thick. Still gives me the heebie-jeebies

Ya, I couldn’t laugh myself. You can still technically drown in foam. Maybe just a lot slower than straight water, but the foam also doesn’t have the density to allow you to propel yourself up and away.
Scot-brogue gritt!!
Straight up hero class. Salutations from my landlocked POV.
What a great video. I often come back to watch Nathan's videos and as someone who holidays on Scotland a lot this was cool. The wave at 9:00 looks like it might be possible, with better knowledge of the break. 10/10.
thanks Nate, your videos are so full of teachings, even when you are not explaining something verbally
Mad bro. This has a kinda south coast NSW in winter feel to it. You guys are chargers. You never stop blowing my mind Nate. It must get annoying always having a camera in ya gob, but thank you so much for doing it.
Nate is becoming that DUDE. That was absolutely insane. Epic Nathan, Epic...
Guys! I've got to say that is literally the stickiest thing I've ever seen; I simply cannot imagine myself ever being that brave. I know this wasn't your intention but, in a strange way this was such an inspirational video.
Nate, your crazy man, that foam reminded me of those guys who passed as you mentioned. I have not had an elevated heart rate watching a video in a while but this did it. Stay safe
Had my heart racing watching that paddle out so much respect to both of you for charging that slab amazing best video yet Nat 👍👍
Great session! That takes endurance, technical skills and just pure guts.. I've been there, not quite that gnarly but..yeah!!
Super respect just to have a good attitude through that, that is soooo gnarly
And just like that, from sketckasaurus paddle to backdoor slab lord 🔨🔥
Nathan cleared a long distance in the beginning and I was like "these guys are really superhumans". As much as I thing they still are, moments later he got stucked for a big time. But he manages keep calm and paddle for hours non-stop, with a go pro on his mouth. Mind and body strength is on another level.
Madness. Great watching you both tackle that 👏🏻
So much respect for both those guys..But Nathan is tha maan..he can paddle through anything
