^ what that guy said I listen to classic/heavy, power, symphonic (really into nightwish atm), pirate, and some folk. Typically once the lyrics mostly focus on growl/scream, that's when I'm out, but there really isn't any such thing as a bad metal genre imho

Dragonforce and Hammerfall fucking suck, Gloryhammer is a parody band. Powerwolf and Sabaton are the only two decent power metal bands you listed. Blind Guardian was covered, but they should have added Iced Earth, Unleash the Archers and Brothers of Metal.

Honestly I've found metalheads can be extremely nice people but super fucking judgemental on what genre of metal you actually like and they get elitist about that real quick. Musical education really changes people in that regard, my best mate was like a huge fucking Megadeth fan through to bands like Revocation. And now we both just sit and listen to fucking everything from megadeth, revocation, Some Folk metal and back to fucking 2000's club songs. Its fucking weird man

The way I've always describe the difference between the two to my non metal friends is that heavy meatal is generally slow, hard punches while power metal is more of an adrenaline rush of seeing how many times you can land a hit in a short amount of time

Really all Metal Genres from about 78-95 are to similar to compare. The extreme ends of "Hair" Metal and Thrash Metal still use the same song structures along with every other Metal genre inbetween. You can expect alternating riffs, solos, singing, intros and outros with various levels of aggression. In fact most 80s Metal bands would have a "Hair"/"Pop"/"Radio Single"/"Light" Metal, Heavy, Thrash, and Power Metal, and Power Ballad track on each album.

I've felt at home with both, and other metal styles, ever since I was a kid. Hearing some of these riffs makes me realise there's some old stuff that I haven't listened to in far too long... something I'll be rectifying this night, with the company of a few bottles of whiskey.

My point is that "heavy metal" is not a separate genre of metal, "heavy metal" is the generic term for all of it. It just got shortened to "metal" at some point, but the full name of the general type of music is "heavy metal" -- that includes death metal, doom metal, folk metal, power metal, etc.
