Heavy Duty DIY Car Ramps

I was fed up of lying on the ground working under things. These ramps make that a bit easier.

    Those are the coolest ramps I've seen. So simple but effective. If I were to build them I think the only thing different I would do would be put cross-bracing in them from top to bottom at a 45°. Great work man.

Thank you. The idea is just wonderful. I think right away. that if the center of gravity is shifted back, then no lifting beam will be needed. The car drove in and rolled over under its weight and stood up straight.....I'll probably do it. THANKS again for the idea.

    I'd like to see a cross tube added front and back through which another tube could be slid right across to link the two units together. You could drill the cross tubes for pins with holes in the links every two inches. You'd still have full track adjustability, but the cross tubes would reduce sideways racking and prevent a parallelogram collapse.

    The only improvement I’d make is to add a triangulation diagonal between some of the verticals to brace it - it might not need it but I’d worry about the domino effect. Edit, should have read the other comments! 😃

    The back part is basically a giant triangle and will hold shape. That also means that the top and back vertical of the rectangle up front will stay in place. So if they welds are solid, it can't move. Left to right I'd definitely put in some cross member. Also in the top and bottom. And one in the front rectangle in each side to take some load of the joints.

  • @ianmib

    @ianmib

    @@michiel5160 the diagonal members of those ramps do not count as bracing, nobody should be using these. Also have you ever seen any engineered device that requires you to be under the load while lifting? I mangled two mouldy ramps I made out of a manky old car transporter driving my diesel Alfa up on it and I've been eyeballing my scrap pile looking to make simple ramps it won't crush. You've confirmed what my gut feeling the 50x50x3 angle I have is both insufficient in length and thickness. 50x50x5 sounds far better, and it won't be all rusty. Clever idea. I am interested in building something similar. One concern i have is the working position. I am debating whether sitting/crouching under the car is any better than lying under it and have the vehicle raised on jackstands. Isn't it very frustrating neither be able to stand or lie down or on a platform with wheels on it. Sorry for the poor grammar. I think the added space for tools is worth it.

  • @DavidMcLuckie

    Hey there. A few reasons it's better than the floor; I'd like to think the ramps were a little safer than working under jackstands. My neck doesn't get sore from lying on my back but having my head raised. Welding doesn't land spatter on you as much. I usually find myself kneeling or sitting cross-legged under a car. Another thing is you can jack the car up while on the ramps. This lets you sit at the side on a seat/stool and you can work on things like the brakes.

    Bought a set of these off a car dealership 25 yrs ago for 400 bucks, they work great, kind of a low budget car lift.

    Love this idea. You said you used material you already had. Any idea how much metal and what the cost would be?

    48 meters of 50x50x5 angle iron is just under £400 delivered. You can usually find rebar for scrap money or free if you take it away.

    Could you make a video explaining where you sourced the steelwork and how much it all cost?

    It must be kinda cool where you guys live. You always got coveralls on. Here in California , we work in shorts and flip flops , no shirts. It’s HOT here! Party weather….. we get too hot working on the car and jump in the pool to cool down, crack a beer and continue. I like your build and your pleasant attitude.

    The summers are starting to get hotter here now, and I'm not adapted to the heat. California would likely kill me. :)

    What kind of side pressure to you think they could handle. My garage would be way to low so outside only. And we have a lot of windy days here outside Chicago. Awesome that your skills are in so many directions.
