Heatsink Soldering & First Run - DIY Laptop Water Cooling - Part 2

Ғылым және технология

Now after finishing my previous project "Laptop Modding Adventure" it's time for a new laptop with a new project!
This time I want to explore the possibilities and benefits of water cooling in a laptop.
There are a hand full of commercial water cooled laptops out there. But what about all the laptops which didn't come out with water cooling support originally? How big the temperature drop will be? By how much does the performance increase? Are the fans quieter?
Let's find out together and see what we can achieve with a water cooling loop inside my laptop (XMG APEX 15 MAX with RTX 3070).
Parts of this video are sponsored by XMG. I did not receive any money to advertise them. I just told them about my plans and they sent me over a replacement heatsink for the XMG Neo 15 (which integrates a waterpipe), an XMG Oasis water cooling unit and Frankenstein, the star of this video.

I really hope your build is going well. Keep checking back to see if you have made an update to see how you knock it out of the park. If not for you I wouldn't have though to use a hotplate to finish modding my GP66 to be bicooled, I can't thank you enough. Can't wait to see how your build ends up!

Someone on Aliexpress was selling heatsinks for different model of Clevo laptops that where designed for external water cooling about a year ago. Sadly, I have not been able to find the shop anymore, but I always thought of how awesome it would be to have a Clevo X170 with water cooling on it.

That would be an interesting side project. Unfortunately I got no X170 barebone. If someone of you wants to have an XMG Oasis compatible solution for the X170 very badly: buy a spare heatsink and bottom case + bottom cover and send it to me ;) It would take a while to get it done though.

Valiant effort, love it. But what really grinds my gears is how laptops are even designed to overheat so much. Every laptop I've owned since 2015 had major overheating problems, I've had 2 razers, a lenovo and now I got a ASUS ROG Zephirus. Still the same nonsense design. I've been using a fan stand on all of em and they can't handle webbrowser + a game open at the same time without risking overheating. TBF I tend to have 50 tabs open but still. I just hate having my laptop overheat and crash so frequently, it only gets worse over time, even factory resetting only works for a month or so before problems come back again.

Wow i missed this new series and i'm catching up only now, again, really cool project. Sometimes the modding process satisfies more than using the product itself ang getting useful results even more! For the custom part are you going to use round pipes? you can follow the hestsink shapes and heights with a round pipe and after that you can crush it to obtain a more oval shape for better surface area and easy soldering...like a heatpipe😂

Aliexpress sells pre-bent water pipe with knurled insert nuts soldered at the ends. They are really soft and really easy to bend.I end up routing with my own pipe since the ones they sell aren’t long enough. I used some thin refrigerant pipe and hammered it flat to around 2.5mm so it fits without modification. I got almost 30C drop to under 60C on the GPU with a passive cooled water loop. I have a post on Reddit but I couldn’t post link here rip

Nice project man, you can add on top of that cooling mod a custom made cooling pad. I've buy 2x 140mm Artic p14 pwm co, 1 12v fan controller with knobs, a cheap 12v power brick. Than i have add some soft rubber strip on top of the fan case (to make a good seal against underneat panel), i also have do a cheap support to all that and i have 7 to 10°C lower temp with 1000/1200rpm less, basically from 15 to 20°C with fixed laptop fan speed. With that i can cool all the component that are overclocked (now cpu, ram, chipset, forced max dynamic boost, custom unvervolt progressive curve for gpu, n°5 in the world with cpu profile for 11800h with an 1050€ laptop and numer 62 in timespy for 11800h and 95w 3060mobile). Obviously to have a good result you need to cover all the air intakes with the fan area, but using Artic p14 pwm c0 i have the same noise as the noctua with less noise from laptop fan, much more cooling for all the components and i have spend oly 50€. Try it, you can have some serious improvement. Also, if you're not using liquid metal, use Honeywell ptm 7950 sheet version, the best themal interface after liquid metal but without the risk of shotrcircuit.

Yes it is, absolutely true. But hey, at least I discovered by accident that removing the back cover benefits temperatures greatly. Planning on a video about that in combo with my 3D printed laptop stand. Tremendously improved temps and fan noise.

@@aymantashfique3194 How ?? By adding copper waterblock onto laptop heatpipes ( soldering required ) and making external watercooling system. The temps under gaming are around 47-50 degrees celsius on cpu and gpu. Laptop is dead silent, and external water cooling system also dead silent - noctua fans used :)

Yep I will share it on my website soon :) But keep in mind that it is made for use without the whole bottom case, not just without the bottom lid/cover. I could make another updated version with shortened pillars for usage without bottom lid/cover only. You will need longer M2.5 screws though. Also beware that under the middle screw hole is the PCB. If you screw in a screw which is too long you can damage the mainboard. Give me some days to update my website and you will find the STL there.

Great series. Do you think you can improve cooling even more by maybe adding additional heat pipes to the fan or does the Fan not have enough space for that?

  • @3DAndStuff

    @3DAndStuff

    Жыл бұрын

No space left, no. But I don't think the heatpipes are the problem. I think it's the fan stack's surface area. If that would be bigger the laptop would be cooler. Plus the fans need more room on the intake side.

pretty cool project though personally id love to have a mod that can easily be removed so base laptop can still be used as is my plan for an aio setup is to just mount the cold plate on top of the copper heatsinks and add thermal paste to it instead of thermal pads but it will get a bit messier

  • @3DAndStuff

The base laptop can be used as is. The heatsink with the waterpipe on top still works as it used to. The laptop can still sit flat on table just as before. You only need to drain the waterpipe before every transport.

@@3DAndStuff Understood! I actually didn't take into account the fact that it is important to use a paste that has the lowest possible melting point, to avoid compromising the other saltings on the original structure of the dissipating solution.
