Heater Core and Cooling System Flush: 2000-2007 Ford Taurus

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This 30 minute video gives detailed instruction on how to flush the heater core and cooling system on a 2000-2007 ford taurus/mercury sable.
Tools you will need for the job:
- Antifreeze
- Catch pan
- Distilled water
- Gloves
- 7/32" socket
- 19mm socket
- Extension
- Prestone cooling system cleaner($5.99 @ oreillyauto.com)
- Tarp
Note:
When disposing of antifreeze, do not let it drain in the driveway or surrounding areas because animals will drink it. It has a sweet taste and animals might die because it is a dangerous liquid. The best thing to do is to dispose of it properly.
My system wasn't that dirty since I had changed my coolant reservoir several months ago. The instructions on the Prestone cooling system cleaner say to flush the system for 10 minutes, but I let my engine run for more like 30 minutes, before turning the engine off to let in cool down.

This is honestly a good video for the average DIY! There are a couple things I've noted. I have the "Motorcraft" brand of "Premium Cooling System Flush" for Ford vehicles and it's a little different in instructions. It states "Add flush to cooling system with the old antifreeze/coolant in it. Run flush process for 10 minutes. Drain the cooling system. Flush the cooling system with clean water. Install new antifreeze/coolant." So it actually skips the initial step of draining the old coolant first..... The other thing I noted was that your "flushing" operation is really only flushing out the overflow reservoir and lower radiator if I'm not mistaken because the thermostats on these cars don't open until almost 200°F & you're obviously not running the engine except in the "cleaning stage" so the thermostat would be closed during the flush operations which means there's no water flowing through the engine, cylinder heads etc. This makes me think it's best to remove the thermostat housing and remove the thermostat itself before beginning the process. This way you can start the engine to get the coolant/water flowing throughout the engine without any impedance to coolant flow. Otherwise the thermostat will remain closed impeding the flow of water during the flushing process unless you wait for the engine to get to operating temperature each time. Then you can install the old or likely a new thermostat anyway at the end of the process just before refilling the system with the new coolant.
