Because if you're character like Mike, life's all about it. Truly it is. A guy such as Mike hasn't got anything to do with 'stupid' family life where everybody plays their role for thirty years to raise some children you don't even know what are they gonna become like. Mike's a man in need of following a strong character as Neil, also he's a man in need of action and adrenaline. He is not in for the money from the beginning, it's all about the action and being part of a team, team that you love and you can die without regrets. Other things, women, children, cars, estates, they're all what society demand you to have, it's not you. I guess dying there during the robbery was enough for Mike, he wouldn't be so pleased with a regular family life without any friends around to kill or get killed with ...

It's kinda sad when you think about it because he was that guy and he did have a wife and kids in the movie. Guess he couldn't balance the two. He wanted the action more

I think you've over analysed his character. There is no societal demand today for family. It's normal not to have a wife or kids. I highly doubt he views his family as a some kind of anchor weighing him down from his love for action. Sure, his talent and adrenaline addiction is an aspect of it. But that one line "I want my 750" shows that he also does it for the money. He is seen as very happy around his children and his wife.

@@mustafaburak4907 This, in my opinion, is symbolic of Neil's inability to follow his one rule: Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds if you feel the heat around the corner. Ironic, considering he was a lone wolf and met a girl, while Kilmer's character already has a wife and child. Yet, Kilmer was able to walk away from them when the heat was literally around the corner (in the scene, I mean), while Neil goes back for revenge instead of walking away with the money, the girl, and the freedom. And when he does have to walk out on it all, it's already too late.

There's chads that live it up now. It's probably easier than ever for Chad. A true 9/10 dude can sleep with a new attractive girl every night. That would take alot of time and effort in 1990. I will say that money went further though. People didn't hate white men and blame them for every little thing. The 90's was the final days of the greatest civilization the human race has ever known. Now, immigration and political correctness mean the west is finished. The whole world will be India by the end of the century. We gave away our countries to virtue signal. The people coming to europe and north america don't respect their new lands. They resent the incumbents and will utilize their irresponsible birthrates to push us out - and liberal college students will applaud it. It's fucked up. All the medical tech, space exploration, comfort, progressive laws that these nations built by white men gave the world - and now we're too embarrassed to exist or something. People hate us because their college professor does. I don't know what happened. But it's over. And I don't think the future will be an improvement. Far from it. Religious fundamentalism is never the answer. But Islam is all these countries that are filling us up care about.

Jim D this scene is incredible, they are figuratively, and literally at a cross roads. The desolate background showing they aren't 'friends' in the true sense of the word. Just criminals who have come together, and will either never see each other again or succeed in the robbery and still never see each other again. The whistle and jingling bit of music as Michael considers his option sounding almost like prison bars as he has to make the most important decision of his life is amazing. Criminals are impulsive and reckless. 'I roll with you Neil... whatever.' Neil's almost like a father figure, or brother, to him by now. He's simultaneously addicted to the thrill of crime and doesn't want to bail on his only friends. So he throws it all away. The lens shot of them by the cars is so well done, they are 'nothing' but what they do. How many criminals are now serving endless years of jail time for a stupid impulsive crime they could've easily backed out of. Anger, addiction, thirst for adrenaline all mean most guys like this always get caught. His acting is superb in this.

The movie just trusts you to read into all the context you’ve been given to understand that a 2 second shot of val kilmer looking surprised is meaningful, and has implications about the history of the crew and the relationship between these two guys. RIP Tom Sizemore. Only 61 😓 An excellent and underrated actor probably my favourite action film of the 90's - an absolute masterpiece - is Heat. Yes DeNiro and Pacino have top billing , but Sizemore is right there with them. His demons got the better of him in later years but when he was on point as solid a character actor as ever there was.

The way Neil talks to Michael about being realistic of the outcomes of the bank score says so much. Despite the side of the wrong side of the law, McCauley is a consummate leader. He cares about the welfare of the men under his command in spite of his own well being. Right or wrong, that's a leader who gets it right and gets things done. 💯💯

Cheritto was an addict but his addiction wasn't drugs or booze, it was doing capers and taking down scores. Just like when normal people can drink but know their limits, it also applies to Cheritto. The risk vs. reward of doing this single score for Cheritto was never worth it. When you got a ton of money in the bank but continue to put yourself at risk for jail or getting killed. Cheritto probably would've gone insane sitting around his house playing dad without being a part of the life of being in a crew.
