Hear, hear. I would like to think that there are cuttings from the film during editing that could be inserted to make a directors cut, even if it last four, five or six hours long. The existing directors cut only works on creating a more visual movie without adding extra scenes. One of the best movies ever though!

So its 95 or early 96. I walk into my video store with some friends. I say to the guy behind the counter 'we want to hire a good new release. Any recommendations?' He hands me 'Heat'. He said 'it's the best movie I've ever seen!' I raised an eyebrow and looked at him skeptically and said 'that's a big call man...' He said 'it's so good that I wish I hadn't seen it just so I could experience watching it for the first time again. It's that good'. And he was right.

The misunderstood, and hopefully rare, thing about this movie is that the immaturity of some guys wanting to play cops and robbers can't justify all of the physical and emotional collateral damage that others, and particularly women, are left to clean up. Most of the main characters that we really know anything about are in a fantasy that they think justifies ducking their responsibilities to anyone but their peers. It's exactly the reason that - Hanna's marriages fall apart - Neil doesn't get out and Eady is left alone - Chris will be separated from his family - Michael's family and Don Breedan's girlfriend are left to fend for themselves - Trejo and his wife are dead It's a truly great movie about the immaturity of some guys made to appeal to the immaturity of others, but it shouldn't be seen as endorsing anything noble. The idea that the guys in THIS movie are the ones who are more mature and stronger is a misreading of what's on the screen.

You see him looking at the sea like if he knew there was no escape. I really wished he would have taken that plane with Eady, but I totally understand why he didn't. I've made that mistake too. It's that eternal fight of those little voices inside you, one telling you to let it go and the other one telling you that you shouldn't, while your "real" you, actually know you definitely should let it go, but you decide not to anyway. You see him struggling with that in the car while driving to the airport, then decides to get out of the highway to his death. That part stuck with me forever. Regardless, it was a master piece all over. The music is hypnotizing.

The symphonic-electronic texture of the score is mesmerizing. I relish the comments that convey what viewing this movie in the cinema was like. Sadly, I never saw Heat in the theater because I was in a long term rehab from 1995-1996 - notwithstanding, I have a visceral experience when I watch Mann’s masterpiece on Television. The image of Neil standing in the dark, staring out at the dark Pacific Ocean is beautiful - somehow this single-image captures Neil’s condition “I am alone, but not lonely.” Michael Mann, a native Chicagoan, first movie was Thief - staring James Cann. Filmed with the same cool and moody night blue backdrop as Heat - Both movies, Thief ‘80 and Heat ‘95 capture my attention and emotion every time I watch them. Michael Mann recently completed Heat 2, a novel that serves as a sequel, a prequel, plus a recap of Heat. Thank you for this video and all of the comments. MK

Because it could be anyone of us, these individuals are not superhuman or special they are just normal people willing to go outside the rules to live a life thier way and take extreme risks. Thats the juice thats the reason...thats the ture score The officer's as individuals are no different...each pushing to thier limits trying to capture them all night out on the prowl hunting in the underbelly of places others would never venture.. that's thier score thier juice..hit In a crazy world...the only time things stop moving, is when ya understand it wont wait for you. Heat has a special place in my heart I first watched it years ago and to this day it’s my favourite Robert De Niro and Al Pachino movie not to mention Micheal Manns best work the film represents a lot from past present and future to respect and understanding like the relationship between Neil (Robert) and Vincent (Al) two completely different guys but at the same time their the same with the same goals and aspirations and the ending I won’t spoil it incase nobody’s seen it but it’s the single most powerful ending in a film I’ve ever seen apart from the shawshank redemption which to this day is the only movie that’s made me shed a tear to how powerful the film truly is anyway back to Heat if you’ve not seen it watch it you won’t be disappointed although I’d recommend watching it at night it makes the experience so much better

Michael Mann, his movies are iconic with regards to gun scenes like HEAT or Collateral or The Kingdom. You sensed it when you first saw Miami Vice in the 80's. Most of his main characters are sharp dressed but show scenes of .....well....."violence begets violence" or opposite forces trying to or cancelling each other out.

Collateral is one of my favorite films just for overall vibe. Michael Mann's style is just unforgettable. Good observation on the themes as well.

I was 15 years old when this movie was released. I Loved it from the first time i saw it and i still get tingles up my spine when i watch it now. There are not many movies that compare to this. I want to watch it with my two sons. I wonder if it will have the same effect on them as it did on a young impressionable me all those years ago.
