Heartbreaking Real Letters From the Titanic Before it Sank

Ойын-сауық

This concludes the Titanic 110 trilogy of videos intended to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the sinking of the great ship.
This video is a little different to what I would usually post as it has no narrated commentary. Instead, read the words of 6 victims of the sinking of RMS Titanic written in the lead-up to the disaster.
To learn more about these letters and their authors, please read my article here;

    The letter from Ramon hit the hardest for me. Imagine having PTSD from a terrible shipwreck you were involved in 4 DECADES prior, believing everything will turn out differently if something were to occur. I can't imagine what went through his mind and the TITANIC tried to hail the CALIFORNIAN, believing that help will come immediately, only to find himself back into a situation of being stranded and helpless. Edited because of auto-correct

    Strongly agree with the statement. A man afraid of a repeat of the tragedy he survived,but in the hope that technological advances would make things more secure. The wireless telegraph worked, the Carpathia came to rescue the survivors, but all technology has its limitations and it is more the human factor like the people of the Californian who did not answer the emergency call of the Titanic

    The letter of young Edgar Andrew is quite devastating. He was a 17-year-old boy. I would think that now we are adults but we were also teenagers and we also had negative visions or thoughts of life at some point when things don't go the way we want them to. The boy just wanted to see his dear friend Josey, but circumstances forced him to take a boat that departed a week before his original trip, so he could not see her, he didn't want a catastrophe to happen, he just wanted to vent his anger like any teenager does nowadays on social media. It is more a testimony that we are human, we get angry, we get frustrated, we throw tantrums and somehow we were or reasoned the same as him.

    Just perfect, the letters, the music, the background. I feel sometimes we forget the big human tragedy , when we talk about the sinking of the Titanic. 1500 maybe a number, but with 1500 lives we also talk about 1500 families who lost a loved one.

    I decided to watch this well after the anniversary. And I nearly shot out of my chair to read about May McMurray's letter. My grandmother was a McMurray, then Heenan, so I'm somewhere WAY down the family tree. But when I had first stumbled and fell in love with Titanic when I was young, I had always heard (from family) about William and how he was lost in the sinking. Sadly really nothing is known about what he did or where he was during the incident, but I'd like to think he acted heroically like the rest of the crew. So it's always been very personal for me for that reason. And I remember reading the letter she sent to her father and it always hits hard. So genuinely I'm happy to see it get some light shown on it, as it always to me gives the sinking and loss a tangible human touch. So thank you Mike, for putting this all together it truly is beautiful.

    Thank you so much for not having narration of these letters. From a fellow video makers perspective, you must have gone back and forth on whether to have them narrated many times, but the choice of just letting the texts speak for themselves is so powerful, it allows the people who wrote them to speak through the reader in as close to the way they intended as we can now approximate.

    Mike(and others), have you ever owned Titanic Voices? I think it was first published in 1994 or so, and this video suddenly rammed into back into the forefront of my thoughts. It's a great collection of memories, not only of those on the Titanic directly, but those immediately connected to it both beforehand(even the mundane who would pay for the dredging of Southampton harbor for White Star's new dock), and the aftermath. If I recall correctly the sections about Southampton post-disaster definitely hit the heart.
