What's hilarious is that so many of the people who do that are provably wrong. Kurt was pretty clear about a lot of things that he loved or hated. I've seen so many people say "Kurt would have hated _____." ...not knowing that he specifically said he actually really liked ______ in some interview somewhere. Hating on Nevermind is the most common thing I see. Hipsters think it's the cool thing to do because they remember 1992 interviews where Kurt downplayed the album and shit on its production. ..but he only did that because the record became something he didn't intend it to become. When Nevermind was first finished, he LOVED it. He personally chose Butch to produce it. ..and by 1993 he had already made his peace with it and started appreciating it again. Making In Utero got a lot of that frustration out of his system. I'm saying all of this based on the fact that he said so himself. "Real fans only listen to In Utero because THAT was the record Kurt wanted to make. Butch Vig forced Kurt to make a pop record against his will. Fuck Nevermind bc kUrT sAiD sO." .... "Pfft.. you think you're cool bc your favorite record is In Utero? REEEEAL Nirvana fans only like Bleach." ...... As far as covers go.. He talked about covers in his last interview when the journalist asked him how he felt about Nirvana covers. Lol So I know Kurt liked Weird Al's parody. He was impressed with how well they pulled it off. ...and he used Tori Amos' cover of Teen Spirit to open a lot of shows. They'd walk out onstage doing goofy interpretive dance to her cover - and then they didn't actually have to play it during the set themselves. Lol Idk if Kurt would have loved this. Totally possible! ..but I'm pretty confident that he definitely wouldn't have HATED it. I can't think of a single reason he would. He had an extremely diverse taste in music. My *guess* is that he would have thought it was "pretty cool". I don't know though. No one does. I don't even trust Courtney's opinion. I bet Krist would know, though! hahaha However, I can think of many reasons he would hate all the people (wrongfully) claiming to know his artistic tastes and feelings about things. ..and the people who literally deify him especially trip me out. You're absolutely obsessed with this dude and yet you've somehow missed the 100,000 times he specifically said how he doesn't want to be worshipped and hates when people think they know him. It's so fucking ironic. He talked about that in SO MANY interviews. I know a couple people who knew Kurt IRL and we've laughed about that a few times. The biggest tragedy is that most people think he was some miserable junkie hellbent on self destruction. I get why people think that.. but it just wasn't true. That's another thing I know he would have hated. ..because he said so himself. There are so many armchair psychologists out there. "You can really tell Kurt is in pain during this show. blah blah blah blah. Poooooor Kurt. I wish I could hug him. blah blah blah." A few days ago, I was watching a Nirvana video and among the sea of "Kurt didn't die to become a fucking t-shirt" comments, I saw one comment that said "I walked up to this young girl in a Nirvana shirt and asked her if she even knew who that band was. She said she didn't, so I just said 'Oh..' -and then carried on with my life." I have to admit.. after I stopped laughing, my first thought was "I bet Kurt would have thought that was hilarious." Lol

I guess the thing is that Kurt was very opinionated and vocal about music style, bands, and "philosophy" to music making and many "fans" use this as a means to criticise anything that does not sound like Nirvana. It's a "scene" thing that you would also see in Punk, Metal etc

Nothing will come close to what you consider the standard, because what you love "has soul" and yet your critiques of other styles usually boils down to aesthetic and conventions as opposed to essence and creativity. Having a problem with looping, synthesizers or even auto tune does not make you a purist, it makes you afraid of change. You don't have to like this, but the most important thing in any art form is evolution, this is what music is developing into, and it goes through phases. Appreciate something different, don't dismiss it to laziness, there are many ways to make music, instruments don't always have to be involved. This is amazing, and this comes from someone who is a huge Nirvana fan, this happens to be my favorite song of theirs, and I love her treatment of it.

This blew my mind! I usually hate covers of what I consider great songs but Kawehi doesn't "cover" (re-do) songs, she inhabits them, infusing them with new life while somehow always staying true to the original. She is my favorite new artist. (New to me, that is, I have no idea how long she's been making music.)

This is an incredible cover, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole thing come together to make something which is utterly beautiful. Well done Kawehi, you've definitely gained at least one more fan in me!

Kurt wanted people to love his music and interpret it on their own. He was artistic and original. So is this gal, by the way she is interpreting the song and transforming it. She heard it differently as all individuals. Also, let's not forget how the other bandmates have evolved over time. Stop being in a box. Leave room for an open mind.
