NOTES: 3 Main Problems: 1) You keep attracting the same type. We like what is familiar. He reminds you of your dad/ caretaker. This caretaker was distant; cold. 2) They want someone else to make their life better & fix their life. 3) If you don't feel lovable inside, you can't make another love you. You sabotage the relationship & try to bring the end earlier. Tell yourself: I will make men who love me & treat me well familiar. List the behavior that is familiar BUT is not good & that you want to change & make "unfamiliar". List the unfamiliar w/c you want to be familiar. Instead of making a man fall in love w/ you, fall in love w/ yourself & feel lovable. It's easier for others to fall in love w/ you when you love yourself. Your mind wants what is familiar. Confidence is sexy. Neediness is not sexy. Tell yourself: You're lovable. Look at yourself in the mirror everyday: Say something good about yourself. Ex. I'm lovable. Don't wait for someone to love you, fall in love w/ yourself. Sooner or later, you wll meet the right person who will fall in love w/ you too.

Marisa, I feel so incredibly lucky to have found your videos this week. I've been interested in personal development for years, reading books, articles, courses etc, but even though I've heard these things before, they never resonated this strongly. I used to say to myself "you need to love yourself first, be positive, don't complain yada yada". but when you said "you matter, you deserve love" it nearly made me cry. You got to the root of the problem just with a few well placed words of wisdom, and for that I'm eternally grateful.

This was mind blowing. I do have one question. If a man working for your love or attention is unfamiliar because you are the one always doing it, how do you not get paranoid or believe they have a hidden agenda? How do trust that kind of behavior? I'm not used to a man sharing their feelings or being vulnerable. My experience is I always find a man who is a project, not a partner. How can one trust the unfamiliar?

I've just come upon Marissa Peers last night. She was the "ad" before the video I was about to view and the few words I heard made me want more. I decided to listen to the full clip and I am completely sold. I'm very familiar with all this personal growth stuff but had become disenamoured. So much seems to depend on the individual therapist's ability to convey the wisdom. Something about Marissa truly resonates with me and I'm looking forward to feeling a lot differently about myself

I LOVE this. Everything you said. This was me a few years ago. It was nice thinking back and remembering, so I can see how far I have come. I chased my mom in my ex, not my dad. I think that is unusual, but I had a great dad who was there and present. I only had a relationship 3 people now. The first one wasn't my mom and the current one is absolutely amazing. Before I found him, I found myself and I am so glad because the mess I was might have sabotaged this relationship.

I didn't think I did it to try to get them to like me, I felt I was just expressing my love for them. But I wondered why they never bought me gifts smh. Marissa, finding you through Mindvalley has been a massive blessing to me. I was in a sudden and deep funk over a work related issue. I was shocked at how instantly stressed and sour my mood became. I was more shocked at how fast I felt my energy shift and my mood lift while watching your talk. I shared it with all and sundry! Thank you!! I am a work in progress having been through many upheavals including: not feeling like the favourite child - being compared (not being accepted for me) , dealing as a 9 year old with the collapse of my parent's marriage - asthma attacks/ moodiness at school / sadness / abandonment issues, shame. Verbal abuse, facing scathing criticism from my uncle's wife who grew up very poor and was super picky and super critical about everything my siblings and I did - treated us as "less than" ( we are the "have not" branch of the family as my mum's siblings were more materially successful owning their own homes and always having very nice things, money for trips and outings etc. ) and always put down my family's way of doing things ( insulting to my Gran ). Turbulent relations with my parents as I entered my teen years - angry at both of them for various reasons though I was happy they divorced because there was no more shouting. Academic disappointment starting with an absolutely horrid and abusive teacher when I was 5 - I've recognised this as the genesis of all my maths problems and want to conquer that subject to feel truly competent and confident academically and open study and career opprtunities. I've tried and failed 4 times with the same grade at O'Level. I took secondary entrance exams during the breaking down of my parents marriage and did very well but was disappointed in myself because I didn't get to attend the school I had my heart set on as my marks weren't high enough to really ensure I got a place since it was a very competitive year. Fast forward to Uni and becoming depressed and losing weight because dad was sick and because of making very bad relationship choices . I'm 5'8 and fell off so dramatically that I discovered there were clothes in size zero - skeletal! I had professional counselling at this point and was able to tell my dad how his actions had really hurt me and he apologised. This was a blessing! Poor relationship choices that perpetuate my having the burden of work and the being treated badly and taken for granted have been a recurring issue though. Positive mental attitude books and very good people have found their way to me and helped me float. Learning to trust in God's wisdom has been invaluable. Academic disappointment has also been a feature in my adult life. I graduated with a lower quality degree than what I'm capable of and professionally tasted failure, having absolutely shattered confidence due to a really horrid and unreasonable tutor in an unsupportive work environment in which I had a practicum as part of the programme I was pursuing 2012-13. It was such a rough programme that my son was a virtual orphan at 7! He told me if I didn't have him to mind I'd do better in my work! What was worse was his dad and I had not long broken up and he was being vindictive. Then at the most intense part of my training he decided to go on a course too! I was so stressed I felt like the wheels were about to come off. My work environment was physically worsening and my asthma was on full tilt. My B.P. started reading high from all the stress and constant chest infections. I did what I could and let the chips fall where they did. I spent the summer of 2013 absolutely exhausted. I had a panic attack last year when I investigated completing the programme and was told I have to start from scratch - all my A grade papers and project work count for nothing! It was such a hateful experience I vowed to look outside the field for completely different career path and not to go back. Further study is needed but I'm not finding what really will thrill me and meet my needs emotionally or financially. I'm in a bind because not having that qualification limits movement in my current field and can lead me to the chopping block given economic difficulties and job cuts. I always wanted my own businesses but have not been successful in properly establishing myself thus far - lack of self-confidence and crippling self-talk. I'm actively seeking knowledge/training in how to invest as a means of diversifying income. In many ways I feel stuck and disappointed. I feel like a failure because I'm in my 40's struggling emotionally and financially and also feel bad because of the hardships my son has gone through. I don't have my own home and live in a family home that needs lots of work. I can't have his friends over as I'd like or properly entertain anyone. His dad quit supporting him financially at one point and fixed up his inherited house making sure to outfit it with all the creature comforts while denying him financially. Simultaneously he slagged me because of "the conditions" where I am and still feeds his shit-stirring sister half truths about why I refused to marry him, why I moved back home, decisions about our son etc. He moved in his new woman and her child and had another one with her which devastated my son initially because he knew that what little time he was already being given was going to be split further with the new sibling. He was so angry he didn't want anything to do with his father. I took him to counselling. Thankfully he now loves his sister. He has tried to drive a wedge between my son and me by having all these distractions but all the heavy lifting falls on me. He's never been properly present emotionally for our son and never properly dealt with his own daddy issues; hurt people hurt people. As a toddler I stopped getting him dressed to go anywhere with his father because he'd often turn up so late it was pointless, the child was sleeping or other times not turn up at all! He's always had time for drinks with the boys though. I actively seek out these kinds of positive videos, books etc. to counteract my son's not feeling good enough though he rarely expresses that feeling. He internalises things and I've had to teach him to speak his truth and also not to blame himself for the decisions and actions of others including his dad. Looking forward to continuing our healing journeys through help from wonderful facilitators like you! You are absolutely right: emotion overides logic. Blessings!
