Health Benefits of Self Heal + Two Self Heal Recipes

The health benefits of the self heal plant are so amazing! Sadly, self heal (Prunella vulgaris) is often overlooked or dismissed as an unwanted weed. But that’s a mistake! In this episode, I’m going to share some fascinating new research on self heal, especially in regards to skin health and cancer.
The versatile self-heal plant is also a great herb to turn to for many everyday health complaints. For example, self heal can help to relieve:
► Minor scrapes, cuts, and burns
► Sore throats
► The itchy, weepy redness of conjunctivitis
► and much more…
I’ll also share two favorite self heal recipes in this episode to protect your skin and keep you cool.
You don’t want to miss making friends with this lovely and gifted little herb! After listening in, you’ll know:
► How self heal’s energetics inform its medicinal uses (and where to learn more about herbal energetics!)
► How to identify self heal
► How to make a delicious, demulcent, super-refreshing self heal tea
► How to make a deeply soothing and nourishing self heal skin serum (your skin will thank you)
Show snippet: “Don’t dismiss this powerful weed! Reach for self heal to cool you down, protect your skin, heal wounds, ward off viral infections, and even to address thyroid health.” (Timestamp: 12:13)

Thank you for your work. I've been dabbling with healing herbs for a while now. I found prunella on my front lawn but didn't know how to use it. I have a plant id app on my phone called Picture This and it gives good info but no real directions for use. I also have comfrey, yarrow, St. Johns wort, hawthorn, willow, and many more growing wild here. I am working on a food forest to help me titrate my chemical meds and go fully natural. I appreciate the work you do. Thanks

Prunella is about my favorite lawn herb. I love her! She heals a sore throat and canker sores quickly. Since c****, it has helped me manage a chronic sore throat and Digestive biofilm issue. Thank you for bringing attention to self-heal.

When we moved in to our new Missouri home in 2015, to a 2 acre semi-wild wooded lot, we had about a 10 ft. swathe of heal-all growing next to the driveway. I'd never seen it before, and asked the neighbors if it was a weed or something planted. It finally bloomed (at 3 ft. high in its shady bed), and I used my books to identify it as heal-all, exactly one day before the deer ate every bloom, as though a five foot high lawn mower had trimmed the tops. I infused it in oil and added it to comfrey and calendula oils, and there may have been some jewelweed in there too---I was very unscientific about it. It's the most healing salve I've made to date.... I'm finding that it moves itself all over our yard, growing in different places each year. Thank you so much for this video... I haven't even finished watching it yet, but I'll watch it again, you can be sure.....

I just found this in my yard. I knew it was something special but this year with the heat we didn't get to mowing so it bloomed. Yay!! It runs along my flower bed.. Now my flower bed boarder just got larger🙌

I live in SW Missouri about ten miles from Branson on a ridge above Bull Shoals Lake. Just a week ago I noticed the tiny purple flowers on self heal growing in our yard so I plucked some to find out what it is. After watching some videos here I decided to eat a couple of the flower pods. To my surprise I could really feel it, and it kicks in pretty fast and feels really good! The next day I went out to see how much is growing out there and was thrilled to find there is a lot, so I've been munching a few of the flower pods everyday since and it's really good stuff! Personally I like it better fresh but it's still good dried. I'll be making some tea with it soon see how that works too.

I don't know the answer to your question about self heal. But I did find that if you type menopause in the search bar inside Rosalee's channel, it pulls up several videos with helpful information. Some of the top results were "Stinging Nettle Benefits," the interview with Kat Maier (which included a tincture recipe for hot flash relief), and "Motherwort Benefits with Maria Noël Groves." Hopefully that helps while you're waiting for a reply specifically about self heal and menopause. 😊

Rosalee, are there any other plants that have square stems that I could be confusing with self heal. What I think is self heal here in SE Tennessee is more of a light purple flower. It doesn’t look very much like the one you’re showing, but it does have a square stem, with leaves that resemble mint leaves.

Wendy, I don't know if I'm supposed to comment to you but our self heal in Oklahoma is a light purple as well. If you have a plant identifier on your phone , I just have Google lens on mine. It's not always 💯 percent, but you can check your findings.

The flowers color can range from light to dark purple. If it has the square stem, and tiny snapdragon-like purple flowers on a cone-ish flower head, it is very likely self-heal. Pretty much any plant ID app should get this one right as it is so common. In any case, if it has a square stem it is something in the mint or vervain families.
