Hey guys, just a note on the Vocal Processing tools in this unit. I am not a vocalist, have no idea what constitutes good vocal effects, and honestly will never use them. Therefore I felt it best not to comment on them with an uninformed opinion. As a Guitarist I consider them a happy bonus! : )

Great production quality mate. I appreciate your objective and well thought out approach to reviews. I just ordered one of these earlier today because I think it offers incredible prospects for the lifecycle of the product. There’s great tech in this system and I think it will drastically improve over time with firmware updates. (I have confidence in InMusic because of the amazing progress they’ve made on the Denon DJ Prime4 with EngineDJ since firmware 2.0. Seeing as this is aimed to compete with the flagship big-dogs, I have no doubt this device will receive great care and attention in its lifespan.) I’ve not used much hardware modeling yet, and was originally planning to get an HX Stomp XL, but was seriously intrigued by this product that I splurged and went for it. My use case will be exclusively studio so the large form factor is actually a plus for me. It may not be for everyone, but I think this will be a game changer, much like the Helix was in its early days. Keep up the great work.

Really enjoyed your review, many thanks! I love what I am hearing from my unit so far. I had the Helix, but imho, I always thought it sounded a touch hollow. I also have the GT1000, and love the sounds from that, but find it frustrating to program. I’m finding it really easy to dial in sounds that I like on the Prime, and this has some of the best presets of any unit. Would love to see some tutorials on how to create scenes and setlists, that go through a bit more detail from what I have seen in some recent videos. Loved your playing, too! Thanks again.

Thank you for the video and for the planned series :) I'm about to buy a floor modeller this year and your video has been rather helpful to me. A little question remained though. Headrush as a company is suprisingly silent right now. Especially with a new unit out on the market. I must admit that I'm a bit worried about this. What are your thoughts on this? I would rather not want to invest in a system that may not be supported for much longer, or that the parent company does not regard as a good product. Thank you a lot :)

Hi mate, first of all thanks for watching! Headrush are actually fairly active by their standards at the moment at least on Instagram and Facebook. They are not as prominently marketed in the industry compared to someone like Neural as they are simply smaller with a smaller marketing budget. I do know the Prime has been many years in the making and I highly doubt that now would be the time for the company to disappear. Dont forget Headrush is owned by InMusic who have dozens of brands in their holding: - www.inmusicbrands.com/

Depending on budget HR is a great affordable option for recording. Have recorded many singles with my original HR board always with great results. However for touring it would not be my first choice due to the touchscreen fragility and generally being a new unproven product for durability. I would go for something tried tested and bombproof like my Kemper Rack or Stage. absolute tank like build and can take being kicked around on stage all day long. Helix is good for durability too but IMO it's starting to show it's age sound wise. I never could get comfortable with the general dullness/flatness of the HX amp models.

This is probably the biggest complaint I hear about HR products. Slow trickle of updates. Unfortunately I don't see this changing much in the future as their R&D budgets are far smaller than someone like Line 6. The good news is that everything they do add usually sounds great!

  • @ChilledGuitarReviews

I would actually answer no. You could get close by disabling the cabinet simulation/IR and run just the Amp model into a power amp and guitar speaker cab. This would move the air and feel closer to a real amp, but honestly it would still sound modelled but that is no bad thing! Modellers these days can sound fantastic and at the same time not sound like a real amp. If that sort of thing is important to you then I would recommend a powered version of the Kemper. Its the closest sounding/feeling thing I've tried and still get a lot of joy from using mine into a Zilla 2x12.

@@NicoMCH666 I think personally the original Headrush just sounds far better with regards to creating patches. I imported my old patches into the prime and they sounded pretty awful to be honest. I only had my prime for a few months and gigged it 3 times and was pretty disappointed. Overall I wish I'd kept my old Headrush. I'm currently using the Fender Tone Master Pro which is pretty good but the Boss GT 1000 is also another great platform. Cost is a factor and I picked up the tone master pro for only a hundred pounds but I would pay for anything over the price of a Boss unit. I would keep you older Headrush but the prime does still offer some pretty good features but overall it still sounds like it's full of performance bugs. Let me know what you decided. If you can try any units that would be a great benefit and also if you have a local music shop you may be able to trade any old equipment towards a new pedal platform. All my best mate 👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶😎😎😎😎

Thanks for doing this demo James! Sad thing about the headrush is... The aliasing. It has a lag especially on a great high gain tone. You hear a wobble or in and out of bass frequency. It's a shame because I love everything else about headrush. But if a boss katana no matter which amp from 50 to artist can have a killer high gain tone with 0 aliasing at the price of $269 US there is no reason to buy any headrush other than for cleans! And headrush if you're reading I really love your units I really do. But you have to revamp this like bad. When you do there won't be competition. Everything else in all headrush units is killer. Awesome playing James. Hopefully there can be a great update to address this.

Honestly, while I've noticed what you are talking about, it's only been when I've used the Headrush's downtuning functionality. Thanks for watching mate! Can I ask what you mean by aliasing? Like digital distortion/artifacting? As Dimitar commented below I have only ever encountered this when pushing pitch shift effects to their limits etc. Now in terms of latency, I actually think there is slightly more latency with the Revalver amp models than with the standard Headrush models. Not deal breaking but certainly noticable, I did attempt to test the difference in latency for this video but I couldn't find anything conclusive. Maybe its all in my head?...

  • @usmcyounggun6879

I see your point but I hope they don’t set up a marketplace on the Headrush. Because I feel if they did that over time pretty much any amp you wanna get off the cloud would be for sale and very few free ones. And that’s one of the most attractive things to me is that not only do I get the unit but for no extra money I can get a high quality clone of pretty much any amp I want right on the unit. That’s just my opinion but I definitely see where your coming from as well.

It still works well with Kemper though, rig exchange has plenty of good free profiles. The more specialised stuff you can pay for. Installing a rig on this thing that isn't downloaded through the Cloud is a bit cumbersome especially if it includes scenes as you have to copy over all the individual pedal presets as well as the rig itself. Maybe I'm spoilt by the convenience of it all but being able to buy straight from the device would be awesome as you can do everything else from it. Thanks for watching! 😁

Dude, I would LOVE if they released an MX5 Prime and removed the vocal effects & channel. I feel like they could even use a TRS mini jack for the fx loop and limit the unit so it can't make amp models but it can load them. I'd still like to make them if possible, but people with an MX5 sized budget probably don't have amps or mics to setup the clones anyway. MX5 retails for $400 US. I'd happily pay $550 for the MX5 formatter, the DSP upgrade and the ability to load amp clones.

@@ChilledGuitarReviews One last question-Can you recommend a good FRFR speaker system? Somehow, the words "thank you" seem small. But thank you for all your responses. I love the Quad Cortex, but I needed a device with a "decent" tone and the HRP with the Practice Tool, Looper and the Antares vocal package is probably the best route for me. Going to have to trust that the HRP community has some decent amp/IR's/Cabs. All my Marshalls, a Dumble, a Soldano were either sold, given as gifts or just stolen so many years ago, so I don't worry about capturing as I will be hoping for the community to have what I am looking for. Thanks again Brother

I've seen guys say they've been unable to clone certain amps with the QCortex, no rhyme or reason, just doesn't like a certain amp here and there.

It is uncomfortable to know, that hardware hasn't evolved - inside is still same Rockchip RK3288, as in all previous HR units. It is 2014 chip, which targeted budget Chromebooks back then! How much more does HR plan to squeeze from it?

Is more DSP really what we need though? In my personal opinion all the development that's needed to meet the shortcomings of this unit is on the software side. The Helix seems to have been getting by just fine on the ancient SHARC processor it has. And despite being a 10 year old modular design inside, the Kemper is still the best sounding thing I've ever used!

@@ChilledGuitarReviews It is fine to squeeze what is possible from existing hardware. But both Helix and Kemper still stay on same devices, and somehow manage through firmware updates. Here we have a new device, with DSP headroom unchanged from original pedalboard from 2017. W/e. If it sounds good, it's good.

Sorry to bother you again. Downloaded the manual and went thru it-Was going to pull the trigger-But for "live" use-I have to purchase a FRFR speaker? They all look like PA monitors: Reviews state: Laney and Headrush-too boxey, too boomy, Fender FRFR-constant "hiss", Friedman FRFR-too heavy, too $$$ And on top of all this> Spending 1300$ to have "the best tones" and you have to "dial-in" the EQ on these individual speaker units??? WTF?? So, I guess it's not about the HRP and its tones/cabs/captures/IR's. It's dependent on the speaker system you need! May I please have an alternative to these FRFR's? About to spend 1300 dollars, and was expecting the tones from the HRP to be good for what I want-But you need to get a "specialized" speaker system for live use?? So any speaker connected to HRP is going to have to be EQ'd-either at the speaker (FRFR) or in the individual rig within HRP you are selecting. That Marshall/Dumble/Vox rigs that come with the HRP are going to sound different due to not having a proper FRFR speaker system? Oh WTF!!

This is unfortunately the case for ALL modern day Guitar modellers. They are best used with an FRFR Speaker or a set of studio Monitors. However FRFR speakers are very much a mostly blank canvas that you can EQ however you like. I use the Headrush 112 units and they are slightly boomy in nature but you can easily EQ this out with low cut etc. You can even use the Global EQ feature to have a default setting no matter what preset you are playing through. If you really don't want to use an FRFR and prefer going into a standard guitar cabinet you can purchase a seperate power amp (a pedal based power amp like the Harley Benton GPA100 is a great affordable option for Headrush). You then just disable any onboard Cabsims or IR's on your modeller and you get all the flexibility and amp models/effects but going through a normal guitar cabinet. I often use my Headrush and Kemper like this to drive a Zilla custom 2x12 Cab. Sounds great and very loud!

@@ChilledGuitarReviews Thank you for your response. I think my existing studio JBL's will do fine-I was concerned about "live use" but I think I will use the HRP as a Audio Interface first before trying it in a live setting. I have been reading the manual as well as the HR forums. (Kind of scary all the issues I have read so far) but the HRP still appeals to me from both a recording audio interface, vocal processor and amp/cab/IR's .Really not going to "clone" any amps, so I will have to try and find a good couple of amps/cabs-as I have read that you should "dump the presets" and start from scratch I have a small single speaker PA that I use at home just for an acoustic set. I can practice using the HRP with that and see how it sounds. As far as a true FRFR-from a price point, yes, the HR speakers are value for the $$-But, last time I played live, my speakers were pointed to the audience vs. a wedge pointing at me. Don't have any more cabinets to try your solution. Ok-Another set of questions answered! Can't thank you enough.
