HeadRush 4 Cable Method - Connect Your Favourite Amp

Музыка

The amps in the HeadRush are awesome, but every now and then we have our favourite REAL amp that just can't be replaced.
This is how you can have the best of both worlds.
1. Left(mono) 1/4" output of HeadRush connects to the FX loop RETURN of amp.
2. FX loop SEND of HeadRush connects to front INPUT of amp.
3. FX loop RETURN of HeadRush connects to FX loop SEND of amp.
4. Guitar connects to the HeadRush Instrument IN.

Just to add to this. I have a 4 cable set up with my EVH Lunchbox and line 6 PODHD. A cool thing i discovered is that you can set your amp to be on the overdrive channel constantly, and then if you want to run pedals in the front and and after you put the fx loop in the patch. However if you take out the fx loop of the preset, everything goes straight onto the power section of your amp (Clean Channel) so you can run an amp and cab sim if you want without changing amp channels. Basically means one button press on the multi effects changes your preset and technically changes your amp channel at the same time.

This was literally the best explenation video in matters Headrush connection to an amp, I've ever seen. Very well done, Dave! Sorry for my bad english. Stupid german guy here. :-) But I've still got one question: Do you switch your Marshall channels with the headrush via MIDI? Sorry, still one question: I'm using a Diezel Herbert and i'm actually happy with the basic sound. But now and then i asked myself, how would it sound, when i could use one of the many amp modelers, cabinets/IRs, which are included in the headrush. But i guess with the 4-cable-method, there will be no chance, right? Obviously it would be a kind of redundancy/duplication ore something? Thx in advance and many greets from germany. :-)

Thanks mate! That’s a great compliment, I’m glad you like the video. Haha your English is fine, I can’t speak any German so you’re doing better than me. I can’t switch my Marshall with the HeadRush because it doesn’t have Midi. I think it is possible if your amp allows for it, but I’ve never done it myself. I wouldn’t use any amps or cabs in the HeadRush while using 4 cable method. It is basically running an amp into another amp. In 4 cable you’re using your real amps sound and treating the HeadRush as your effects. Hope that’s helped!

@@DaveWebbMusic Hi Dave, i am still a bit confused about a few parameters. Sorry. Are you always using the same FX Loop-parameters (100, 0.0, 5.8) as in your video, or does it depend on the individual rigs? And what about your "rig-with"-value in the OUT settings? I guess it's just stereo/mono thing, but it influences the sound a lot. Thx in advance :-)

I'm using a catalyst 200. I usually set my catalyst input on the amp in mode but with the 4 cables technique it sounds way better leaving it on "fx loop" mode. Now, the tricky part, I'm using a mx5. When i put the main out level in "amp" mode instead of "line" the volume cut down by about 1/2 i'm not sure why, and I don't really notice any sound difference between line and amp. So, why is it supposed to be on "amp"? Same with Fx-return level, you can pick rack or stomp. Stomp lower the volume about 1/3 and there is a little sound difference but it's hard to tell since the volume becomes too low to hear it well to comparate with rack mode. Anyone knows what the "best" settings should be? And why does it sounds way louder on main out set on "line"?

I have mine set to ‘stomp’ and it worked fine. It wouldn’t hurt to try both, it’s only a level thing (as far as I know) much like the “AMP/LINE” switch. From memory my MASTER volume is cranked. Again, just play with it until you get the desired level. Of course start low and then gradually turn it up.

In my limited experience with FX loops there is always a drop in volume. This happens with my TSL & my Tube Amp Expander. To an extent it also occurs in my digital amp modellers as well. You can compensate with extra volume. If it’s very noticeable I’d suggest leaving it on and turning the effects on & off as you need them. If the audio quality degrades and you don’t like it, then you’ll need to make a choice.

Depends where you want to place your effects. If you like everything before the amp, then just plug straight into the front. Personally I like my reverbs, delays and some mod effects in the FX loop. In that case you would need to use 4 cable.

  • @jplee3

Thanks for this! BTW: what does the #2 (Headrush Send -> Guitar input) do exactly? I tried on my Boss Katana Head and it doesn't seem to do anything - I think when I do Headrush Output -> Katana Return it seems to 'disable' the Katana Input (e.g. if I plug the guitar into the Katana Input, there's no signal that passes through it). I'm also not 100% sure what the Katana Send -> Headrush Return does either... it seems slightly redundant since the Katana's onboard FX are active just with Headrush Out->Katana Return.

  • @DaveWebbMusic

    @DaveWebbMusic

    Жыл бұрын

The HeadRush send is sending everything you have before your amp. For example, overdrive, distortion, chorus, etc. Whatever you like. They all hit the front end of your amp. Every after that is essentially in the FX loop of your amp. Delay, reverb etc. Using a Katana you obviously have a lot of already great effects, so you’re right, you don’t really need to do 4 cable with it. I’d check in the Tone Studio for Katana to see if you have the send/return enabled or not. Might be something like that…? In theory it all should work as I’ve demo’d if the cabling is right.

In my living room, I never had my amp's master volume higher than 3 and it's super loud, but when i set on main out level to "amp" I have to crank up my amp's master volume to like at least 6 or 7 which usually would be loud enough to play a small venue, now it's just a comfy living room level cranked up that high. Hey mate! Sorry to hear you’re having issues. Make sure you don’t have an amp or cab in your HeadRush chain. Because you don’t want either of those being run into another amp/cab. (Just covering all bases) I’ve found that some sounds don’t act the same as analogue pedals. Literally try them all and find one you like. Record a loop in your HR, keep it playing while you swap and tweak. Try adding an EQ before or after your Distortions/OD’s. Might help tighten things up. You can’t download any extras for HeadRush, they do the updates. Speaking of, make sure your unit is running the latest firmware. Delay and Reverb to me are to be used at a lot lower level than pedals. They’re too ‘wet’ for whatever reason. IMO In regards to your other question about using 2 amps. I’m not sure. I would suggest an A/B but I’d need to see it and play with it… Amps & Pedals vs Modeling is hard. End of the day I use modelers for convenience. I find the stuff I like the sound of most, and feel the best. They may be copies of real products, but in this case sounds like you should approach with that only as a guide. Cut back on the levels of things and see if that helps.

Oh yeah man, for sure. Pedals integrate really well with the HeadRush. You can put it either in the loop or run it before into the input. How are you using the Metal Zone with your JCM? Don’t hear many people doing it, I wanna have a go.

I followed your instructions on how to connect all the cables to and from my Headrush pedalboard to my Marshall however I am having an issue. Only the effects I put in front of the FX loop block work, all the effects I put behind it don't work. They are activated but don't work. is there a setting I have missed somewhere? kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKCgtMODfJzUpKQ.html

So this setup won't apply to mx5

It should be exactly the same. The MX5 still has a send/return, and and FX loop block. Follow the steps and away you go. 🤘🏼

@@DaveWebbMusic what a sad day, my mx5 just arrive I did the fxloop connection, Mx5 left(mono) to fxloop return 6505mh, it's working for a few minutes then it saddenly died😔. Did I do wrong?

Oh no! Hopefully it’s nothing drastic. 4 Cable Method needs to like this.. Plugging straight into the input, just make sure the amp and cabs are not in the rig. I hope it’s all ok!
