Head to Head Echo CS-590 Timberwolf Vs. CS-620-PW Chainsaw Review Ep. 25

In this video we compare an Echo CS-590 Timberwolf and an Echo CS-620-PW. Our recommendation unless you need a bar bigger than 20” is the Timberwolf. With the video of the 620 vs the Husqvarna 455 rancher I would put the Timberwolf well ahead of the HUSQVARNA.

    There was a breakdown of both of these saws on a forum where they were doing a very in depth teardown and work up to a fully woods ported pair of saws. The larger carb is the largest performance gain going to the 620p. Mufflers are the same. The cylinders and pistons are different. The 620p is 'tuned' for higher rpm and it does breathe better from having the larger carb and slightly different porting. The 590 has a more torquey and less peaky power delivery and makes peak power at a lower rpm due to carb limitations. That's not to say the 590 has more torque, but it has a more linear curve. I do know that once they fully woods ported each saw, the 590 was the torqueyer saw of the two but didn't have the snap in the high rpm range the 620 did, but it would pull longer bars with less disparity. Letting both saws pull without dogging in, the 620 was always faster because it made power higher, and thus had somewhat higher chainspeed, but when dogged in they were nearly identical in cut times in, I believe the test was 16" wood. But I'm running off memory. The unlimited coil, when in the wood, makes very little difference in a stock saw. The limiter is in the 12,500 rpm range. You won't pull that in the wood ever in stock form. Maybe it allows slightly faster limbing in very very small wood, but that's negligible. Yes, the differences are slight port timing differences having different cylinder heads, twin ring vs single ring piston, different carb, different coil, aluminum vs polymer top handle, clutch covers (590 is single dog, 620 dual), sprocket, and different Oregon bars, power match vs pro match. For a truly professional user, those slight differences may lean towards the 620p, but for the average firewood guy looking for the best saw for the dollar, NOTHING comes close to the 590. Probably the next closest 'best saw for the money' is literally the 620p just due to overall quality and function. Arguments could be made that the Makita/dolmar 5600 is the next and I wouldn't be upset with that choice either. If memory serves it's about $60 more than the 590 while giving up about 5cc. Very easily the second best saw under $500 though. In near parallel with the 620p would be the dolmar/Makita 6100, the 6100 is slightly more expensive but they are within about $50 of each other.

    Wow thank you for posting this. I have a Cs 590 I use at work (tree service) and have been trying to decide if I should sell it and buy the 620, or modify it and make it more like the 620. Change to Rim sproket, get new dogs, a better bar. I dont really care about the handle. Do you think I should upgrade my 590 or just get the 620?

  • @bryantitus6634

    @bryantitus6634

    Жыл бұрын

    @@marcofemto9417 @Marco Femto the price on a 620p is relatively modest considering what you get for it. By the time you upgrade a 590, which really needs the carb from a 620p to see it's true potential as it's under-carbed, and changed sprocket setups, upgraded bar, etc you already spent enough on the 590 to turn it into a 620p as what buying the 620p would have cost to begin with if you take into account the cost of the 590+mods. A 590 with the 620s carb swapped onto it is very likely the best single mod you can do. The bar is adequate on the 590 as is. Made by Oregon. The bar on the 620p is just the next model line up of Oregon. Still not that improved. I'd run the spir sprocket till it fails. Mine still hasn't and it's blocked about 50-60 cord if wood. Instead of new dogs I would buy the 620p clutch cover as it gives you dual dogs. That said the single dogs on the 590 don't suck anyways. Again, pretty much in use, the carb swap is the largest mechanical difference between the two saws. It will cut the difference substantially. But buying a 590 to put a 620p carb on it is dumb, cause it cost literally within about $50 of the cost of a 620p then, but if you already have a 590.....

I have the echo recommended 27 in bar and chain combination for the CS590 and it has come in handy on bigger trees. If you are going to be needing a 27 in bar on a regular basis ( even residential) Id go to the 620. For me I only need the 27 a couple of times a year and I always get it sharpened after a days use and it runs fine so I am happy with the 590. I keep a 24 in bar on it 90% of the time and it’s great, once you learn the trick to starting this saw.

    I had a heck of a time deciding between these 2 just a short time ago. Ended up getting the CS-590 24" (because it is such a bargain) from Saw Suppliers and am not disappointed. Only about 10 tanks through it so far but it rips. Already threw the chain once working on a stump though and boogered it up (rim sprocket would be nice). I don't think Stihl and Husqvarna have anything that can compete with this saw for less than $550. Echo kills em power for dollar. When I think back to when I purchased my Stihl ms250 "on sale" for $300, I had to buy additional chain to replace the lame safety chain that it came with plus a bunch of overpriced oil just to get the extended warranty that Echo includes right off the bat. I probably paid as much for that weak ass thing as I did for the Timberwolf. The 620p is still a great deal, I just wish Echo would upgrade the air filter to something like what the 7310p has. Then, it would be a lot easier to justify the extra $.

My suggestion is do either a pipe mod or have someone do a muffler mod for you, Iowa Performance Saw's done mine and retuned it and it's a beast compared to factory and it runs cooler too making it last longer. I'll probably buy the 600p clutch cover for mine with the captive bar nuts and another thing, out an O-ring in the air filter and it will keep the contaminates out. They're cheap too..

    $200 difference. I wear an old set of motorcycle over pants when cutting. Without them I would have ended up having to get stitches on a couple occasions.

    The echo commonly has flooding issues where it won't start. Even brand new.

    Indeed. That's why you only choke it once and crank no more than 3 times. It'll start again for the rest of the day

    thats probably a user's error, it will happen with any saw if you don't know how to properly start it.. ive seen guys flood professional grade saws because they dont know how to do it..

    I had this happen with a two day old 620, everything i own is echo and i love them. I believe it happened because i carried it upside down for about a 15 minute walk into where i needed to cut. The trick with these when they flood, put the chain brake on, push the choke in, hold down on the throttle….knee on the machine…it will crank over in 2-3 pulls
