I was doing a shift at a College radio station in Oregon. I was also an assistant Music Director. Normally I did the first shift starting up the station. But on this particular night, someone told me John Lennon has been killed. I couldn't believe my ears. "Woman" was climbing up the charts as "Watching The Wheels" was the #1 song. I threw together a tribute in 15 minutes. Another good song is "Just Like (Starting Over).

That doesn't make sense. The only single from "Double Fantasy" at the time of John's death was "(Just Like) Starting Over", "Woman" was the second single off the album, and released after John's murder, while "Watching the Wheels" was the third single. Neither "Woman" or "Watching the Wheels" were on the charts at the time of John's murder because they were yet to be released as singles.

This is without a doubt one of Lennon’s most beautiful song. But it came out not long before he was murdered and it still kinda makes me a little emotional. The ironic part about the video is that there is a picture of Lennon signing his a copy of his Double Fantasy album and the person who he is signing it for, who is also in the photo, is the man who would gun him down a few hours later.

There's a bittersweet aspect of this video in the scenes in which Yoko is a widow sitting alone and how the killer destroyed the physical bonds of the relationship; hence the pictures of the assassin and even the corpse. I believe the "to be continued" part is Yoko's message that he's still with her and us in spirit, and that can't be destroyed.

John Lennon, the man was freaking unbelievable.
I always saw this song as an apology for his failings within their relationship. And there were many, but they loved each other fiercely and forever. Now go listen to Beautiful Boy, his love song to their son Sean. It's extraordinary.

They loved each other very deeply. It's SO obvious. Not only in the music, but in how they treated each other, even how they looked at each other. Just watch that now famous interview they did while laying together in bed in their New York apartment. Yoko didn't break up The Beatles, The Beatles did. They were having problems years before she ever showed up. It just kept getting more and more toxic until everything just blew up.

@@Leigh69 Sometimes people who love each other still have problems between them. I know this is going to sound callous, but there's really no other way to put it... that was just sex. At the end of the day they both knew who they were going home to and would spend the rest of their lives with. If you are trying to judge their behavior based on current morals, you are out of line. The 60s and 70s had a very different mind set. I know, I was there. The most common theme you would hear everywhere was "sex, drugs and rock n roll" and they meant it. I know that may sound strange to you, but that's how it was. I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with the sentiment, only that it was a fact of life at the time

@@Leigh69 On the contrary, they loved each other deeply and it showed any time we would see them together. You're trying to judge 60s and 70s behavior by today's standards and that's not how it was. Sex, drugs and rock n roll was the catch phrase and it was apt. That was the age where "swinging" was very much in vogue and people involved didn't mind. They knew who they loved and were going to stay with. Everything else was "just sex".

Lennon was such a beautiful person. And a musical genius.
Their love was legendary. In the beginning, we hated it, but then we realized she wasn't taking him away from us.
Everyone is every age they've ever been. None of one's ages is ever lost.
Such a great song, a true testament for his love for Yoko
Glad you liked this one. You both know how you can attach a memory to a song. Where and when you first heard it. Woman always has a bittersweet nostalgia for me because of John's death.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
I always found this video so sad, Yoko I’m sure loved John so much and never thought she would have to live her life without him , she looked so lonely. Still one of my favorites …
This is a great song , its beautiful in its meaning , and soothing to listen too , romantic The child in the man means he loves her as innocent as a child and he is vunerable to her and knows she will take care of him and watch over him .even when he acts like a child . but love the man who protects her and loves her
The little child inside your man speaks of his trust in his wife, and his vulnerability in her arms. His faith in her is that of a child. My wife told me that she would never hurt me on our wedding day, and I would bet my life on it. Thanks!!!
Never noticed how perfect the key change is after at least a million listens
Yes! He is gone since many years and i really miss him and when i hear this song i always cry a little bit.
Wish a man would express his feelings to me as pure and clear as John did. He was in a good place regardless whether Yoko was a likeable person or not... We owe her for being the inspiration of such beautiful songs
John had strayed when in Los Angeles and was amazed that Yoko still loved him and took him back. He treated her crappy.
John was known for trying to send the message of peace and love to a world that really needed it. But in an interview said, “If I can’t get it right with the people who I say I love and care most about, then all the rest is just bullshit.” Yoko showed him that success wasn’t just fame and fortune, it was family.
Beautiful song, one of Lennon's best from his comeback album 'Double Fantasy' released in 1980. Creepy fact - At 4:13 there is a picture of John Lennon's corpse lying on a slab in the mortuary.
"Mind Games" by John Lennon was another great song.
My favorite song off his last album, Double Fantasy.
Such an amazing song with deep lyrics.

WHAT??!!
Quite possibly the greatest love song ever written about a woman. John was a poet as well as a great composer. This song demonstrates his love for Yoko, who did change John in many ways and taught him how to open himself up to his own desires, fears, and weaknesses. John could often be very hard, sarcastic, and even mean before meeting Yoko. He was definitely different after. She pushed him to use his fame and persona in the cause of peace and love for others. Initially the world hated her for changing him and blamed her for the breakup of the Beatles, but over time it was revealed their relationship had nothing to do with that. When I hear this song, I can only imagine the sorrow she felt on not only seeing him shot and killed, but how she had to feel every time this song was played in the months that followed. Since his death, this woman has devoted herself to his causes, his art, his poetry, his music, and his memory. Now That is LOVE, and I thank her for her efforts in this. She helped make John the man we all have come to love and admire.
I think they moved to New York in the early 70's. He was tired of the British press and the way they tore Yoko Ono apart. They thrived in New York because of all the artistic people and the way she was accepted, that meant a lot to him. After Sean was born, he put aside his music and became the stay-at-home-dad for the next five years and did everything with Sean. Then he got really inspired to start writing music again. This song was part of his last songs before he was murdered. What a close family they were and to have him brutally taken so suddenly (like, unfortunately, what happens to many families), it's so tragic. But what he left us was an amazing legacy and that's what is important to focus on.
John Lennon was a great man and musician.
John and Yoko were soulmates I believe. John Lennon has written so many beautiful songs.
Flower plucked so early... so much Love
Lovely reaction. Thank you!
This is off his comeback album. This song is him telling his wife thank you for being what he felt he needed to complete him. Yoko his wife is blamed for breaking up the Beatles, I don’t know I was too young to know. I was in high school when he was murdered. That day in school, second period, our stoic English teach just spent the entire period telling us about John Lennon, he was his hero. The teacher wept as he spoke about him. 40+ years later and I still remember that day, especially the morning.
Imagine how much more beautiful music we would have received from John
Love is the cupcake. Peace is the frosting.

My favorite John Lennon song.
what a shame their journey together was so tragically brought to a premature demise, love this song , wish i had somebody in my life who deserved this kind of adoration
I love this song, I dedicated this song to my girl :)
In many ways, this song is Lennon's apology to Yoko. In 1973, the couple was having problems in their marriage, so Yoko agreed to put their relationship on hold and let John sow his oats. He did, taking up with his assistant May Pang and engaging in some unruly behavior. Lennon referred to this time as his "Lost Weekend" - it lasted about 18 months. Speaking with Rolling Stone just days before his death, Lennon said: "'Woman' came about because, one sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us. Not just what my Yoko does for me, although I was thinking in those personal terms... but any truth is universal. What dawned on me was everything I was taking for granted. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything." Peace out.
yes LOVE!
I have to tell you Brad and Lex, I thought you were going to lock lips when Mr. Lennon sang:" I love you! Now and forever!" Lol!

Watching the Wheels is another good song of his from this time.
This is why he was my favorite Beatle and what a fantastic album too
all time classic! ♥
When i see this video something ever comes to my mind. Lennon used to walk across Central Park and said hello to every person and signed autograghs to anyone who came around even the Day of his death. Who other famous artist do this in these days? He was a great man taken away so early.
Haven’t heard that forever and you guys had a really great understanding of the whole song
John had gone through a sort of rebirth prior to this album. He was always a tormented guy and it came out in ugly ways...drug abuse, spousal abuse, child abuse, cheating, and ugly, public outbursts toward his friends. By this point he felt genuine sorrow over this stuff but had finally come to grips. You can hear it in this song and several others from Double Fantasy. He's undeniably happy and at peace. That final chorus kills me every time. It's so genuine.
A BIG THANK YOU FOR THIS HE WAS THE MAN 🥰
Awww man, I missed this live. I had been requesting this for a while.

I can’t believe I’m FINALLY in agreement and on the same page as Brad !! A first…
Lex is certainly right about how senseless taking John Lennon's life was. I got married in June 1980, and I still remember being awakened by the radio alarm clock on the morning of December 9, 1980. The radio played for a minute or two before my hand reached out to silence it by hitting the snooze button. Then as I lay there slowly waking up, I said to my wife, “Wait a second, did the radio just say someone shot John Lennon?” She replied that she thought so. After that, I was fully awake and ran to turn on the TV to see the news. Unforgettably sad day. Up there with the days that John and Bobby Kennedy or Martin Luther King were shot.

You should listen to "Girl" from the Beatles "Rubber Soul" album, sung by John Lennon. First there was "Girl". Then there was "Woman". A bit of time going by.
This video is a bit chilling as it was taped just right before he was assassinated-plus the photo of John signing an autograph for his assassin and the morgue pic was a bit shocking.
I don't know why I enjoy this song.
NICE GREAT REACTION
I, and probably many more people, never liked Ono, but Lennon did make some pretty songs after he left the Beatles. Even if they weren't really at the level of the previous works, the songs are still classics and worth listening.
Amazing song 🎵
2:40 Lex's face 😊
John Lennon was one of the most prolific songwriters and musicians ever. His senseless murder shook many of us who heard the sad news that day, so thank you for saying those kind words about his loss and how it impacted his wife, his son and all of us who loved his music. We may all not agree, but killing is definitely wrong. It's so much easier to peacefully agree to disagree.
Lennon said that 'Woman' is a grown-up version of his Beatles song, 'Girl.' I love both songs, but 'Girl' is the sort of thing a 20-something who is still figuring his life out would write about his fantasy girl: everything in the song is about how funny and cool she is, and how great she looks, but it doesn't say a lot about her as a person, because it isn't really about her. It's solely about *his* fantasies and insecurities. 'Woman,' on the other hand, is about a mature relationship with a real person, somebody with her own feelings who makes her own contribution to the relationship and wants to be recognized as an equal partner. It's about the real deal of relationships, not the fantasy.
Lennon wrote this song as an ode to his wife Yoko Ono. He regarded it as the most Beatles-like track on his Double Fantasy album and he called it the '80s update of "Girl," which is a track on Rubber Soul. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything." In many ways, this song is Lennon's apology to Yoko. He did, taking up with his assistant May Pang and engaging in some unruly behavior. Lennon referred to this time as his "Lost Weekend" - it lasted about 18 months. This was released as a single in January 1981, about a month after Lennon was murdered. (Songfacts.com)
She loves you yeah yeah yeah. Dipping into the past.
That muttered "for the other half of the sky" at the beginning is, believe it or not, a reference to Mao Tse Tung, who wrote "Man and Woman are each half of the sky" - possibly the only good thing he ever wrote. I still remember exactly where I was when John died. I didn't want to tell anyone, because somehow that would have made it true, and I didn't want it to be true. Still miss you, John, and we still need your vision.
John definitely was not ready to sling some lead, had he, he'd still be alive today.
