I was doing a shift at a College radio station in Oregon. I was also an assistant Music Director. Normally I did the first shift starting up the station. But on this particular night, someone told me John Lennon has been killed. I couldn't believe my ears. "Woman" was climbing up the charts as "Watching The Wheels" was the #1 song. I threw together a tribute in 15 minutes. Another good song is "Just Like (Starting Over).

That doesn't make sense. The only single from "Double Fantasy" at the time of John's death was "(Just Like) Starting Over", "Woman" was the second single off the album, and released after John's murder, while "Watching the Wheels" was the third single. Neither "Woman" or "Watching the Wheels" were on the charts at the time of John's murder because they were yet to be released as singles.

This is without a doubt one of Lennon’s most beautiful song. But it came out not long before he was murdered and it still kinda makes me a little emotional. The ironic part about the video is that there is a picture of Lennon signing his a copy of his Double Fantasy album and the person who he is signing it for, who is also in the photo, is the man who would gun him down a few hours later.

At the end of the day they both knew who they were going home to and would spend the rest of their lives with. If you are trying to judge their behavior based on current morals, you are out of line. The 60s and 70s had a very different mind set. I know, I was there. The most common theme you would hear everywhere was "sex, drugs and rock n roll" and they meant it. I know that may sound strange to you, but that's how it was. I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with the sentiment, only that it was a fact of life at the time

You're trying to judge 60s and 70s behavior by today's standards and that's not how it was. Sex, drugs and rock n roll was the catch phrase and it was apt. That was the age where "swinging" was very much in vogue and people involved didn't mind. They knew who they loved and were going to stay with. Everything else was "just sex".

Quite possibly the greatest love song ever written about a woman. John was a poet as well as a great composer. This song demonstrates his love for Yoko, who did change John in many ways and taught him how to open himself up to his own desires, fears, and weaknesses. John could often be very hard, sarcastic, and even mean before meeting Yoko. He was definitely different after. She pushed him to use his fame and persona in the cause of peace and love for others. Initially the world hated her for changing him and blamed her for the breakup of the Beatles, but over time it was revealed their relationship had nothing to do with that. When I hear this song, I can only imagine the sorrow she felt on not only seeing him shot and killed, but how she had to feel every time this song was played in the months that followed. Since his death, this woman has devoted herself to his causes, his art, his poetry, his music, and his memory. Now That is LOVE, and I thank her for her efforts in this. She helped make John the man we all have come to love and admire.

I think they moved to New York in the early 70's. He was tired of the British press and the way they tore Yoko Ono apart. They thrived in New York because of all the artistic people and the way she was accepted, that meant a lot to him. After Sean was born, he put aside his music and became the stay-at-home-dad for the next five years and did everything with Sean. Then he got really inspired to start writing music again. This song was part of his last songs before he was murdered. What a close family they were and to have him brutally taken so suddenly (like, unfortunately, what happens to many families), it's so tragic. But what he left us was an amazing legacy and that's what is important to focus on.

In many ways, this song is Lennon's apology to Yoko. In 1973, the couple was having problems in their marriage, so Yoko agreed to put their relationship on hold and let John sow his oats. He did, taking up with his assistant May Pang and engaging in some unruly behavior. Lennon referred to this time as his "Lost Weekend" - it lasted about 18 months. Speaking with Rolling Stone just days before his death, Lennon said: "'Woman' came about because, one sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us. Not just what my Yoko does for me, although I was thinking in those personal terms... but any truth is universal. What dawned on me was everything I was taking for granted. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything." Peace out.

When i see this video something ever comes to my mind. Lennon used to walk across Central Park and said hello to every person and signed autograghs to anyone who came around even the Day of his death. Who other famous artist do this in these days? He was a great man taken away so early.

John had gone through a sort of rebirth prior to this album. He was always a tormented guy and it came out in ugly ways...drug abuse, spousal abuse, child abuse, cheating, and ugly, public outbursts toward his friends. By this point he felt genuine sorrow over this stuff but had finally come to grips. You can hear it in this song and several others from Double Fantasy. He's undeniably happy and at peace. That final chorus kills me every time. It's so genuine.

Lex is certainly right about how senseless taking John Lennon's life was. I got married in June 1980, and I still remember being awakened by the radio alarm clock on the morning of December 9, 1980. The radio played for a minute or two before my hand reached out to silence it by hitting the snooze button. Then as I lay there slowly waking up, I said to my wife, “Wait a second, did the radio just say someone shot John Lennon?” She replied that she thought so. After that, I was fully awake and ran to turn on the TV to see the news. Unforgettably sad day. Up there with the days that John and Bobby Kennedy or Martin Luther King were shot.

You should listen to "Girl" from the Beatles "Rubber Soul" album, sung by John Lennon. First there was "Girl". Then there was "Woman". A bit of time going by.

I, and probably many more people, never liked Ono, but Lennon did make some pretty songs after he left the Beatles. Even if they weren't really at the level of the previous works, the songs are still classics and worth listening.

John Lennon was one of the most prolific songwriters and musicians ever. His senseless murder shook many of us who heard the sad news that day, so thank you for saying those kind words about his loss and how it impacted his wife, his son and all of us who loved his music. We may all not agree, but killing is definitely wrong. It's so much easier to peacefully agree to disagree.

Lennon said that 'Woman' is a grown-up version of his Beatles song, 'Girl.' I love both songs, but 'Girl' is the sort of thing a 20-something who is still figuring his life out would write about his fantasy girl: everything in the song is about how funny and cool she is, and how great she looks, but it doesn't say a lot about her as a person, because it isn't really about her. It's solely about *his* fantasies and insecurities. 'Woman,' on the other hand, is about a mature relationship with a real person, somebody with her own feelings who makes her own contribution to the relationship and wants to be recognized as an equal partner. It's about the real deal of relationships, not the fantasy.

Lennon wrote this song as an ode to his wife Yoko Ono. He regarded it as the most Beatles-like track on his Double Fantasy album and he called it the '80s update of "Girl," which is a track on Rubber Soul. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything." In many ways, this song is Lennon's apology to Yoko. This was released as a single in January 1981, about a month after Lennon was murdered. (Songfacts.com)

That muttered "for the other half of the sky" at the beginning is, believe it or not, a reference to Mao Tse Tung, who wrote "Man and Woman are each half of the sky" - possibly the only good thing he ever wrote. I still remember exactly where I was when John died. I didn't want to tell anyone, because somehow that would have made it true, and I didn't want it to be true. Still miss you, John, and we still need your vision.
