You know the reason for a sound and know it to be harmless but irritating, and still it gives you a panic attack. I can only think that you have some deep persistent association of the sound to something really disturbing. This might be too wishful and overly simplistic idea from me but have you tried to experience such sounds in some really positive circumstances? The idea would be to overlay the old negative association with something really positive. Or is simply impossible to experience anything positively enough to suppress the panic attack?
