I am learning English here is my homework: Heather and Dan went for a walk to the park. Dan was deciding what they should eat while Heather was on a diet so they did not want to eat, all of the sudden they screamed at the top of their lungs, "take a look at them!" They turned around as fast as they could to see what they was talking about but they had no idea. At this point they was very confused and decided that they needed a coffee so they asked them if they also wanted a coffee. They said no and that they would go get a beer instead. Dan realized they needed some cash for a tip so they lent them a couple of bucks. After their drink they went to the mall to finally get lunch.

What about to be verb after a singular they?

The usual plural conjugation of the verb follows after singular they. "They *are* a friend. "

Hmm, I also learned when I was young that mankind or men are used to generalize which includes women as well. Those words can even mean everyone but because of feminism, there was this reaction against their use for generalization. Therefore, I can't say mankind nowadays and need to use humankind.

And sorry, but not accepting mankind or he or his to mean everybody when it was also used like that before (as seen in many old texts and not just in 1984) and saying it is old-fashioned but then using Shakespeare to defend the use of they or them today because of trans activism is just plain cherry picking. I use they, them, their, themselves when generalizing as much as possible and have avoided using mankind to mean everybody because I have acknowledged that women have been excluded in the past, but I will use he or she accordingly if I see a person as a man or a woman. If they tell me they preferred to be called a she or a he, fine, but I will not use they with them because the pronoun "they" even in the long long past and used as a singular pronoun was used because the gender was not known and used for generalizations. For me, there is no such thing as a non-binary. Either you are male or female and the exception like the intersexed is just that, an exception to the rule.

Can somebody explain, please, why do they substitute things like bookcase or clycose with the pronoun "she" instead of "it". I know that "she" is for people, not for things. Is it a new trend? Can't find any information but hear it regularly.
