He's just Ken, and we're just done: Editors slug it out post-Oscars and put memorable season to bed

Фильм және анимация

Sunday night's 96th Academy Awards signaled the end of a memorable Oscar season, inspiring Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan - prolific Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire - to slug it out one last time over Zoom and mourn the categories that got away in their forecast. But before grieving their misguided last-minute prediction switches, the men discussed what they liked (and in one case, didn't) about the ceremony itself. Watch their colorful and opinionated discussion above.

Seriously shut up! Cillian's speech was the best. He dedicated his win to his country and peace!!

You stated that “a month from now no one is going to remember Cillian’s speech” - I don’t think that is true because Oppenheimer is to receive a theatrical release in Japan on March 29, more than eight months after it opened around the world. The fact that Cillian was very sincere in his speech and made a point of dedicating his Oscar “to the peacekeepers everywhere” was important message to make before its theatrical released in Japan. I realize that American movie critics are Giamatti fans but you have to let it go now and give credit where credit is due: Cillian gave a brilliant speech. It was genuine, heartfelt and it had the right tone given the subject matter of Oppenheimer and the current geopolitical conflicts. Dedicating his Oscar to “the peacekeepers everywhere” was concise, appropriate and powerful message.

The best thing about this season is industry showing those pundits they don't care about their opinions and their attempts to push narratives for actors. Cillian and Emma gave absolutely best performances this year and they won. Deservedly.

Cillian steamrolled the award season but have never seen a group not appreciate his performance for what it was 'the best' plus Emma was the whole movie, oppenheimer dominated the award season and was great to see

He did a pretty bad job during interview with Cillian, during which Cillian was very bored and paid more attention to his dog lol. I guess that's the reason of Marcus being so butt hurt

I'm glad you guys made mention of Cord Jefferson's speech. One that has not left my mind. I really appreciated Christopher Nolan making a point about movies only being in existence for about 100 years. It really puts things into perspective and made it feel special being recognized as a piece of the art form's history & evolution.

'"Im Just Ken" is a song that must play better with fans of the movie because for me "What Was I Made For" is a much better song. One that moves me and makes sense outside of the movie's context.

I think people are confusing best song with best performance. Yes, "I'm Just Ken" is flashier and lends itself to a spectacular performance, which it was. But for me, hands down I would still vote for the song from Barbie that won as the better song. In my opinion, it is better written, more nuanced, more depth and emotion. If the category was best presentation or performance of a song, then I agree it might be a different outcome but people seem to have trouble separating the 2.

Billie Eilish is winning is no buzz kill, but I agree that the placement of the award could’ve been better. And the award was for songwriting, not for performance quality. It’s deeper, and it’s Barbie’s theme. The only win for Barbie had to do with Barbie more than Ken.

lily gladstone and michelle yeoh were in a similar situation. what hurts lily is that final oscar voting began 3 day before she won sag. so after she won sag, oscar voters only have another 3 days to vote, so probably many voters already voted for emma for the first 3 days of oscar voting, knowing that emma won bafta 4 days prior to final Oscar voting began. where as in the case of michelle, final oscar voting did not begin until 4 days after michelle won sag. so that means oscar voters have a full 6 days to vote and knowing that michelle won sag going into voting. i think that makes a difference between michelle winning oscar and lily losing oscar. had lily have the same time line as michelle, she might have won. also other factors boost michelle case is that she is in the best picture winner movie that sweeps everything to the point where it helps jamie lee Curtis to win as well, where as lily's film was not an oscar front runner, which has no enthusiasm in any other categories but lily's leading actress category.

@@ShHeMiLeRe there is no way of knowing. michelle has a full 6 days of momentum for Oscar voters to vote for her, while lily only has the last 3 days of momentum for oscar voters to vote for her as soon as she won sag, and emma has the first 3 days of momentum for oscar voters to vote for her when she won bafta 4 days before final Oscar voting began. the final Oscar voting timeline of last year is so important that it also helps bendan fraser to win the Oscar over austin butler.

How is a best song determined? What are the parameters? The Oscar voters thought the Eilish sing was better, but that is subjective.

  • @drdavid1963

@@aprilnewell5434 - Well, it's not all subjective. There is a craft to a song - melody, harmony, lyrics, degree of difficulty. I'm Just Ken is not a very difficult song to write. The Billie Eilish song is superior because it displays elements of craft that the other song doesn't have. But as the voters just vote for what they like, they seemed to like it better. And I like it better too. Not everybody does but obviously enough people to make it win.

I don't think the outcome would have been different if Lily Gladstone was nominated for best supporting actress. Killings of the Flower Moon was a movie that was respected but not beloved by audiences or critics. The Holdovers was the "feel good movie" of 2023. Everyone agreed Da'Vine was the heart and soul of the film. She was always going to win that Oscar. Regarding the screentime, I have to disagree with Max. Once again, KOTFM lost momentum a long time ago. Unfortunately, it is now the THIRD TIME a Martin Scorcese film wins zero Oscars (the other two were GANGS OF NEW YORK and the IRISH MEN). Let's also remember actors have won Lead Oscars for supporting performances: Nicole Kidman for the HOURS, Olivia Coleman for THE FAVORITE and Anthony Hopkins for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.

No I believe she would’ve won by virtue of amount of screen time talk about her being nearly a co lead. The passion for that performance would translate into pushing her to a supporting win.

The presentation of the acting awards did not work for me. To long and drawn out with to many of the presenters giving long, awkward, forced lead ins for each actor. I will take clips over that any day. Also does not make sense from an industry standpoint to present the acting awards such that people who have not seen the movies get no teaser as to what the movie and performance actually are like. I'm not motivated to go out and see anything after this. Hope this way of presenting the categories is not resurrected again.

Everyone seems to like this year’s ceremony, but I found the show kind of dull. The pacing was off to me, there were so many awkward silences, I hated that there was one hallway for winners to walk into and presenters to wait in. I also hate when they don’t show acting clips!

And the rest, thot unsure follows the herd in the days leading up to Oscar night. I'm glad tt majority o Oscar voters r voting based on merit n performance, n not history making narrative. Its Best Leading Actress competition, not Best Missing most of the times Award!!

Respect everyone on the show. But I say this speaking for many in the Jewish community that a Jewish person winning for making a holocaust film and then critiquing Jewish people was not appreciated and left a very sour taste to the show. This morning many Jewish people were upset that a moment acknowledging the holocaust was used in that way. I hope next year very controversial topics can be left out of the Oscar shows.

'Critiquing Jewish people' that's not what he did, what he critiqued was the genocide actively being done to the Palestinian people by the Israeli government (and he used far milder language) which is incredibly relevant to the topic of the film he won for

You forgot this part of his opening monologue, which was my favorite and helped to appease my disgust with the many Barbie snubs: "Here we are all dressed up celebrating the best of the best beginning with Barbie,” Kimmel said, describing the film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as a “monster hit.” What an achievement to take a plastic doll no one even liked anymore… Now Barbie is a feminist icon thanks to Greta Gerwig who many believe deserved to be nominated for best director,” Kimmel added. After the audience erupted into an applause Kimmel quipped, “I know you’re clapping, but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her by the way. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this.”
