They used Colt Python .357 revolvers. The most expensive one made at that time. Police ballistics would have realized it was a more scarce gun for the time in police service. Revolvers have cylinders not magazines as stated in the narration. The final scene it was not a .38 snub nose revolver pointing at Dirty Harry it was a Colt Python.357 magnum, 4 inch barrel service revolver, the same as carried by the 4 motorcycle officers.
