He Held an NFL Record. He Had No Idea About It

Спорт

In 1974, Dallas Cowboys punt returner Dennis Morgan returned a punt 97 yards to the house for a touchdown against the St. Louis Cardinals, setting a franchise record for the longest punt return ever, and being just one yard off the NFL record at the time for the longest punt return. The only problem? It was actually the NFL record. The statistician completely screwed up

Speaking of 98 yds, one of the most fascinating, and strangest, plays in NFL history, belongs to WR Bobby Moore of the Cardinals (Ahmad Rashad after he changed his name). Moore had a 98 yd reception in a 1972 game - and did NOT score.

Crazy! Not a bad way for Dennis Morgan to make it into the one td club! Good vibes! 😎 😮😮😮

The punt return by Robert Bailey of the Rams vs the Saints that broke it, is just as good a story

1974 was the final season of the careers of Bob Lilly, Cornell Green and Walt Garrison. And the final season with the Cowboys for Bob Hayes and Calvin Hill. Less than 2 weeks after this loss to the Cards, the Cowboys would trade backup QB Craig Morton to the Giants. That trade garnered the 2nd overall pick in the 1975 draft..where they took Randy White. Giants could have had him or Walter Payton but for that trade.

Thank goodness someone high up with the NFL saw the CBS telecast of this game and realized that a statistician shorted Morgan a yard. Nonetheless, not a bad way to make it into the one-TD club!

The statistician did the equivalent of doing worse than spiking the ball to the ground on every single play.

The 1974 nfl St. Louis cardinals are one of the strangest #1 seeds in sports, they went 10-4, made the playoffs for the first time in 26 years, as a #1 seed, they didn't get home field advantage and lost to the Vikings 30-7 in the divisional game.

That was because from 1970 to 1974, the NFL playoffs featured a rotating lineup for division champions. In the divisional playoff games, the AFC Central champions and the NFC West champions played their games on the road. Then, in 1971, it shifted to the AFC East champions and the NFC East champions playing away games.

Perfect case in point was in 1972. An undefeated team had to play the conference championship on the road due to this rotation. Imagine if the Dolphins lost to the Steelers?

It is not a statistician error. Watch the review again, where you show Morgan stepping at the 2. Go forward and you will see the Back Judge toss the black marker down at the 3. It is an error by the on-field official and the statistician just repeated it on the score sheet.
