Thank you for such a great video. I can so relate with all the advice . I moved from Oregon coast during COVID to the Big island of Hawaii to retire. It is beautiful but now I’m looking at Mexico… I am in the thinking stages of moving. Again thanks for a job well done!

If you are not too finicky with needing everything at absolutely the U.S. standard, Mexico has more cultural character and charm than Hawaii in my opinion. The main challenge will be finding a place without too much noise (if that is an issue for you) and low crime rate. Home break-ins are too common in some areas of Mexico. Do your research. Note for me one thing that is lacking are no basketball courts and no jogging oval, at least where I am in Baja. Ensenada and Cabo have an oval rubberized track but I do not want to live in those higher cost, noiser, congested shities. Theft is reasonably rampant in Ensenada but seems to be very low in some other areas of Baja. Also lack of sidewalks and even unpaved roads in rural locations and towns. Why not rural Oregon? The climate?

It was still hard to determine if he felt he made the right decision to leave Hawaii for Mexico. Sounds like financially it's a bit more advantageous to live in P.V. but felt like he is still questioning the move. He definitely didn't act like it was the best decision ever and no regrets he just described it matter of fact.

I think he was happy with the decision to move to Mexico, but he wasn't super excited about the place he rented. Hopefully he'll find a better spot after his lease is up.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexicoyou don’t need a scientific study to know masks do almost notbing. I worked in a chemistry lab for 36 years! If you can smell a fart through your mask it most certainly is not stopping any viruses. But if it makes you feel better, the psychological value is enormous based on the mental status of the participant. The masks were an economic and ecological disaster, but it probably helped keep the insanely fearful of life in check at a crucial time. Me? I refuse to wear one and it never made any difference at all.

So we have now seen Bill Gates saying Covid was NOT what they said, it did NOT have a high death rate, it was "like the flu", etc, we have medical journals saying, oops, yes, Ivermectin CAN be used after all (cheap generic safe Nobel prize-winning drug, FDA approved long ago, then the greedy liars pretended it was bad, restricted and PUNISHED doctors from using it, and so on). And as I researched I found the US Swine Flu fraud of 1976 (the 60 minutes segment is VERY interesting, info in a 1978 Washington Post article about the government payouts for the vax harms then that said mass vaccination is always a problem (those vaxes were stopped after far few deaths than the number we saw with Covid vaxes), info re vaxes in India and Africa, info re the 2009 Swine Flu fraud in the UK, a horrifying story about the 2016 vax program in the Phillipines for Dengue fever, which a couple of experts warned against, yet it went ahead and several HUNDRED children died, and more such stories. Hawaii is a wonderful place to visit! Kat and I have spent a lot of time there. People in Seattle and Portland seem to choose Hawaii as their go to warm destination because there are affordable and direct flights. Enjoy!

IMO there is no need to live in the expensive areas of Mexico... Why waste that money ? I would prefer to live in a quieter less busy area.

It depends on a variety of factors, including age and ability to adapt. Some are okay with a hard landing in leaving the US. Others need a soft landing. And yet others struggle with the realities of Mexico in relation to the realities of the current United States.

Very interesting interview... I have spent a lot of time in Hawaii and with the home base of Oregon this conversation is interesting. I used to have friends in the North of Oahu ( near the windward mall) actually a Very almost exclusive "Hawaiian" neighborhood so not many "white" people in that area. However in more recent years changes there have been reducing hostilities. To really learn more of Hawaii's history I spent time on Senator Fong's Plantation with his family explaining so much of what they had been through over a 50 year time period... I don't know if they are still showing tourists through there. I also love Mexico so this is so interesting to hear different perspectives on both places.

Thats wonderful that you had the opportunity to really learn about the history of Hawaii over the last 50 years. I also live in Oregon and have chosen Mérida Mexico for my soon to be place of retirement. Aloha or Hola!

This was so interesting, comparing the two destinations. I appreciate that Steven mentioned that he knows what he needs to be comfortable and happy, anyone thinking about moving to Mexico should consider those things as well. It's the Lele doll on the "walk" signs in Queretaro.

I imagine going to the US and going berserk because my lawyer, my doctor, my pharmacist wouldn’t speak Spanish. There are so many Americans that are sooooooo entitled, so much arrogance. In Mexico, the common language is Spanish. In most cases, if people talk to you in English out of COURTESY. Let’s not confuse courtesy with obligation. Greetings! 😊

I think most gringos understand this (not all.) But it’s nice that professionals like doctors, lawyers, etc usually speak English. I’m ok if I screw up my order at a restaurant because my Spanish isn’t perfect. But when talking to my doctor, I much prefer English.

You can use a Medicare Advantage program in Mexico, not standard Medicare. Not time limit on using Advantage plans here, used it twice in nearly four years living here full time. I totally disagree with him about the quality of housing here in Mexico. If you take your time and look around over six months you can find homes equivalent to US standards.Wife and I four years ago bought a house in Bucerias which is 20 minutes north of PV and we paid only $180,000 for our home and it has high quality primavera wood in the doors, the cabinets, the closets, and the kitchens tooo. In the bathrooms and kitchen the countertops are perfect granite countertops without any flaws. Updated plumbing and electrical and a solar system too and in a mostly Mexican neighborhood. Maybe he should get out and check out a few more dozen places away from Gringolandia.

He's renting, I believe it's a condo. I've seen the different levels of construction in Mexico. I had a builder break it down into three levels, with gringos wanting the highest level and locals preferring the lowest level because it's more affordable. I'm guessing the $180,000 house would be closer to $350,000 today. 4 years is a lifetime when it comes to construction costs (especially when the pandemic taught everyone they could work from home overseas...) Quality construction is definitely available, but it's all about how much you can afford. Thanks for the info on Medicare Advantage. The US / Mexico real estate comparison and discussion is very relevant. You shouldn’t try to compare housing in a 4 season climate US area with beach front in Mexico. Depending on the construction quality, amenities etc. a comparable property in the US will be 2/3 to 80% more expensive in the US.

If I had unlimited resources I would live in Hawaii in a heartbeat. But the cost it too much. Mexico has great weather, is more afforable, and the local people are nice. Aloha. 🤙

As for the dog thing. Yep. We moved back and forth 3 times with a dog. In fact, in 2002 I broke new ground in Hawaii:) Long story. But the last time I went in 2018 it cost me more to take my dog than to ship my car. No joke. and they KNEW me very well. Always nice. Aloha Ms. K and it was just a cursory look but it still cost me:(

I've known self made multimillionaires that won't go back to Hawaii. They earned their money and saw Hawaii as a large waste of their money. If you want to enjoy your life without working yourself into an early grave you need to look at the actual cost. But in my opinion the worst parts are cost and the crowds. P n D

I guess it's all about priorities. Hawaii has the best weather of any place I've traveled. Honolulu: 80 degrees in January, 89 degrees in July. 9 degree difference on average. I'll let you do the conversion. I'm from the US, so I have no clue how to use any systems that actually make sense.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico Well where you "stay" just remember 82 F is just about 28 C . 0 C is 32 F or freezing and something YOU only experience if you enter a walk in freezer. Or get brain freeze from drinking a frozen Margarita toooo fast. 🙃 And speaking of priorities. For me it's a must that my savings don't expire before I do.

We also chose Mexico over Hawaii. We sold our cottage on the Big Island and bought a beautiful 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath home in Mexico.

The gentleman is describing living in a premium resort area of Mexico. We have lived in Lake Chapala and have not experienced the poor quality he is describing. He can do much better in more central Mexico.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexicoin 2014 we rented a home in Ajijic just off of the Carretera on the mountainside with beautiful views of Lake Chapala. We lived there for almost three years. The rent was $875 and we paid all utilities except for water. The house was fully furnished down to dinner napkins. The gardener was included in the rent. The quality of construction was first-class. There was no AC or central heat and neither was needed. We rarely closed the sliding glass door off of the master bedroom.

I lived on the Big Island since 2002 off and on until 2019 (total of 10 years on the Island). It's nothing like Oahu so talking about Oahu as if it is "Hawaii" shows that he never explored the other islands:) Big Island was cheap rent until 2008 Crash when the Big Banks got their Bailout and bought up all the homes that ppl LOST. Rents went up across the Nation including Big Island. That is America today. and Guadalajara and Mexico City are very modern and have art, culture and history, even more than Hawaii:) This guy lived in a bubble and apparently still does:(

He is spending way too much on rent. I am spending $300 to $550 in Baja everything included. The problem is he is trying to compensate for the noise by going upscale in housing. I have my vehicle, so I just moved around until I found quiet places to live at an affordable cost. I also found places that are of reasonable quality, almost comparable to the U.S. standard although not quite. The ultimate plan of course is to buy land and build exactly what I want.

The best Asian food in Mexico is in Culiacan Sinaloa, best sushi , best pizza, BEST TACOS and Puerto Vallarta has amazing food !!

Steve has a green screen background. Notice when he moves his head how the green screen is evident. I should think he'd want to be in his authentic location with a real background.

I’d like to ask Steven about the humidity in the summer. Does it feel about the same as Oahu in PV? I lived on Oahu for many years and am thinking of a move to PV. What can I expect different with weather?

Mexico is an interesting mix of freedom and responsibility. There's much less judgment of others choices (including choices that impact others like having a party with loud music until 4am.) But folks also are committed to taking care of each other. I'm sure it's regional like it is in the US.

It sounds like all of Mexico is underdeveloped….small towns might be but there are also very modern cities. Looking at this I don’t know how people move to central/South America because they’ve less advanced than Mexico. There are so many places with good Asian food in Mexico! Mexicali, Baja California, pesquería Nuevo León, they even call it pescorea😊 etc….

There, at least with that person, is still a bit of resentment and maybe anger. Not much we can do today about what our ancestors did...

There's a need for recognizing why some people may feel resentment. Our ancestors did some not great things, but even today, many people from the US treat Mexicans poorly. For instance, the republicans in congress want to send troops into Mexico to attack the cartels - with or without permission from the Mexican government. I'm amazed at how well most people from the US are treated in Mexico - that speaks volumes to how gracious they truly are.

Kat and I were looking at property on the big island, and the prices were reasonable. But a year after we started looking, the neighborhood was covered in lava. But the cost of living was high no matter where you lived.
