Very, very nice. No need for any 3rd party apps. Just needed to boot into IOS Recovery. In my case, the internal and external HDD and SSD all showed the same silver metal icon. However, if you clicked on those icons you could read the sizes of the drives. I was retiring an original 2011 time frame HDD with a current SSD. Too, I was required to upgrade my MacBook Pro from El Capitan to Catalina so that my IOS.16.1 would continue to be recognized by my ancient MacBook. Another note, if you pay attention in the video, it was said that the cloning could take anywhere from minutes to hours. My half full 320GB HDD took about 1 hour and 50 minutes (110 minutes total) to complete the cloning. Seemed like a long time, but it is installed, boots, and all is working well. As a previous poster said, you did need to unmount both drives at the beginning. On the back end, I only mounted the new SSD. When I went to the Startup Disk routine, it only showed 1 drive to select for the system boot. Hope this might help someone going forward. Thanks to Never Stop Tech.
Thank you, that was very informative. Unmounting both drives is key , I was missing that. 👍
Very good detailed video. Was in a pinch to find a quick reference video while upgrading my Mac Mini 2014 last night and found your video to be very helpful. Been playing with the Macs for hours the last few weeks and learned something new from your video on using the startup disk feature. Very useful.
Fan-tas-tic, very well explained and very clear, congratulations!
Thanks man worked perfectly
Thanks! Awesome tutorial! 💯
Thank you for the help.
When you said the data source needed to be unmounted as well, the video showed that it's still mounted then you proceeded with restoring to the external hard drive. Which one is correct?
Thanks for sharing !
Awesome, Thanks!
You are so smart! Thanks
Thank you very much.
Great job thank you. Did you remount the original hard drive on the ssd start up?
have a like good man, you saved me!

Bro...I lve watched 8 of the top rated vids on this...Yours is the best and most user friendly. Thanks man!!!
great video!! Question, can I use this method to only update/back up new files after I've done a clone of the 2 drives?
very nice.... so when we have this clone in future if we have any problem with our os we can use this as backups and restore the external to internal again and we can get back all installed app working fine know....??? am i correct
Worked perfect on my 2015 MacBook Pro I used a ssd stick idk if that’s the correct name for it but I followed the same steps
awesome. what is the compatible ssd for 2015 macbook pro?
baru tau ane, ga perlu pake program pihak ketiga, mantap
Liked and subbed. Q: why do I have to name the new SSD the same as the old HD? Thx. Great vid. Keep it up.
Thank you for this simple and clear tutorial. Please, I have a mac mini that I partitioned. Now I just want to clone just an image of the partition that I am using. How to do that? And how to restore that partition on the internal hard drive? Do you have any advice for such a case? To be detailed about my case, I have 2 partitions on my internal hard drive. One with a latest os x operating system and another with a downgrade version. The partition that I prefer is the second one, that is the one with the downgraded version. So I would like to clone the prefered one and then erase the whole internal hard drive to restore the clone and gain more space, since I am not using the partition with the latest os x operating system. Sorry for being so long...

In your case, cloning would be unnecessary. Just use DiskUtility to erase the unwanted partition, then resize the partition you want to keep so that it's equal to the sum of both partitions. Simple..
After upgrading everything was fine. The day after my it was slow as hell! 15-20 mins to start up. I tried the start up disk method, didn’t work for me. Any ideas?
Question: Does this Cloning also clones my Windows 11 and Linux partition, so I can triple boot from my new SSD drive ???
What if your HD is not Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but instead APFS (Encrypted)... should it still be the same steps?
I was following another tutorial because want upgrade from HD to an SSD. But after the restoration process and try to initialize the system using the SSD, get the white screen with ? folder. So, the difference (and what I think gona be the game changer) is the final step when you set the drive wanted to use as the System default starter. Trying this right now, hope works for me this time. Thank you!!!

I recently made an installer usb drive its 64gb. It has 4 partition on it with 4 different macOS. It took me a while to make it, I’m new to the macOS environment. I wanted to make a backup of my usb to store away Incase of corruption that may happen down the road. How would I copy the whole usb to another usb of the same size? Thank you.
How do you clone a hard drive using an other computer
How I come I don't have the restore option? Am I'm missing something? Thank you!
So once u clone to the ssd in the enclosure, do you then remove it from the enclosure and install it inside the imac? I have a late 2012 imac that will be installing a 1tb ssd into it but obviously want to clone everything first. Please lmk.
Anyone answering questions here? Again, why do I need to name the new SSD exactly the same as the old HDD? Thx
It didnt work. Got the following error message" "Could not recognize "/dev/(null)" as an image file, Could not validate source - Invalid argument, the operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 22.) Operation failed...
I couldn’t restore “ Restore process has failed “ why if you can help

Do you know what key should I press instead of Command + R, if I'm using the Windows keyboard to get to the recovery mode?

Crt + r, windows + r or alt + r not 100% sure
I tried this but disk utility failed with error about a broken seal on the source drive. Apparently there are issues with the latest MAC OS Big Sur. Do you have a workaround for that or did I miss something in the video? Thanks

I would say for cloning they're about the same with Utility tool being a direct from apple tool. Super Duper is more a swiss army knife. I havnt used Super so I couldnt say for sure but this should help www.macworld.com/article/2461362/drive-cloning-utilities-the-best-mac-apps-for-making-a-bootable-backup.html
I bought an external SSD 500GB and I want to clone my current old iMac HDD which is 1TB size in order to use my new SSD as the bootable drive. Is it possible to clone from a bigger drive (1 TB) to a smaller one (500GB)? I'm currently only using 300GB.

Short answer: yes.
Hey. Why is it that my New SSD in USB connection, like you show, turns up as a Internal drive. ? And not on the external like you show. Regards Tid

www.itninja.com/blog/view/how-to-clone-mac-encrypted-hard-disk-drive this may help
For me I took 50 hours
it's not a good idea to have the source and target hard disks all the same name.
Basically you say basically non-stop
Dude, turn off the auto-focus on your camera...
you gotta be more scripted and direct, you're all over the place, I need focus hahahaha sorry im a psycho
You didnt explain shit.
Why is mine got a error? It says COULD NOT CHANGE THE PARTITION TYPE FOR /dev/disk3s1 - error -5342
