Nothing beats the 1984 version. Nothing I tell you!
Thanks to this video I noticed I had the wrong backpack to my 1984 spirit🦅
84 everytime
While shopping with my dad as a kid I was begging for a new figure. Dad said "No" but bought himself Spirit because he liked it so much...however I was allowed to play with him! That figure was lost to time but I did buy him a replacement with the 2008 version, which is still carded & hanging in his workshop
I love the gear and Freedom of the modern Spirit. That Spirit though. That face!
I honestly don’t know how anyone could like the “newer” versions better than the 80s figures. It’s not even close, imo.
Excellent comparison. I’m an old school kind of collector so I prefer the old version of the figure but I do appreciate and prefer the accessories of the modern one. The removable magazines and knife are a nice touch. I like the color of the older version of the bird. I agree with you that the body looks cluttered with stuff on the new version of the toy. The chest knife should have been much smaller given that it is not removable. Cheers M
Awesome character! Never had one, myself! Thanks for the comparison!
Wish they would go back to the way they man gi joe to being with in the 80es
Man that removable knife is awesome :D
Got to love a Native American ranger that fires arrows from his rifle instead of bullets. How do you make that cooler? By adding an eagle named Freedom of course! I love this guy so much. Thanks for the comparison.
It would be interesting if you using a couple of those 1/18 scale figure creators body / weapon parts to create your perfect figure for joe and Cobra ( I'm only asking because there is so much to chose from) but it would be interesting to see you do your own create a figure and mAybe keep it or auction it off
Am had in past Spirit figure in Marauder version in 92 ... Nice review thank you Commander !
I agree with you on all points, + the face on the new fig is awful! it s like he lost part of his jaw or something... they really should have reproduced the original colors, it s not better. the vintage Spirit really still looks fab today! everything was right about him, he made a great addition to the joe team. good work Commander!
At first, I was worried all those modern figures would compromise the integrity of your classic reviews. But creating separate, short videos like this has actually worked out to be really interesting.
Ah, another chest holster translation issue! That knife is...really awkward looking to draw.
I really like these vintage x modern reviews.
Man does this buy always have a hate boner for the modern versions. They are miles ahead of the older versions but because of nostalgia blinding him, he can't be honest.
Nice work
Great Review Spirit was my first figure so He'll always be perfect in my eyes.
You know what really sucks about the modern Spirit figure? That NO ONE at Hasbro recognized how stupid it is to have a Native American equipped with an ARROW GUN!
1984 Version looks like a film star, 2008 Version looks like a old Indian drunk..
A lot of those 25th anniversary joes had some flaws. The best modern spirit was the pursuit of cobra spirit.
I agree I like the vintage figure over the modern. With the new scuplts even though they have more detail and articulation I still feel that the originals have more play value.

Each era have their issues imo. Vintage is too fragile in the hands. New Mold has proportion problems with chests and shoulders. Modern aren't really appropriate for kids and by 2009, started repeating the mistakes of the 90s.
Enjoyed this video, if you do another compare/contrast could you compare articulation points? I don't know how the modern figures move, or even if they all have the same points. Thanks for the video.
His head is messed up. I gave mine to the fire station a few Christmases ago.
Cool camparison
The modern spirit is light years better then the classic. Rose color goggles be damned.
Vintage all the way.
I love the vintage spirit, really has a look of a Union scout, I can still picture him keeping surveillance with Airborne on Snake Eye's cabin ... the 25th figure has a horrible face sculpt and that regular problem a lot of the modern figures have where they can't hold their weapons properly. The left hand looks like it was sculpted for a bow.
What do you think of the Collector Club version of Spirit ???
Spirit Iron Knife v3 is commonly considered one of the worst modern figures. :/ Spirit Iron Knife v4 and v6 is where it's at. v6 is my default Spirit.
I prefer the 2008 version
The V1 SPIRIT is my favorite of all the GI JOE figures. It's sculpted well, and has the best proportion of the early figures. The modern figure really looks awful, in my opinion. It's werid in proportion, overdone, and just weird looking. The accessories are nice looking, but the figure is wonky, wonky wonky! It looks like a Frankenstein mess. Cobbled together by different proportions body parts, and very unnatural looking. I would never own the modern one. Nope. Never. The original is amazing in comparison, and it remains one of the all-time BEST GI JOE figures. The skin color isn't perfect but I'll point out that not all Native Americans have deep tones of a redder colored skin. Skin tone varies. I agree with most of your assessments though.
American Indians have brown skin dark brown skin not pale
for the record...i have both versions. for the record I HATE spirit overall. to me...the modern WRECKS the original in many regards. the color choices u bring up to me personally are negligible. The "bulky" aspect of his gear to me makes more logical sense for a "tracker" type soldier unit. Sure spirit is a dumbass and has his knife handle hitting his face..but we give him a pass on that. the eagle molds is no comparison IMHO, the retro version is downright laughable. Removable dart cartridges just makes this comparison a one sided beating. That being said the biggest fault of the modern version is the actual face sculpt. Spirit is supposed to be a young man..but that sculpt on the modern version does him no favors....he seemed to age a billion yeats in iterations!!!! In this battle of botton tiers, modern wins easily. Retro spirit is only good for catching sword strikes to the face from version 1 and 2 of stormshadow ! :-D
