I got this figure for my 11th birthday in 1984. I was starting to feel too old for toys, but I still thought it was one of the best birthday gifts ever. Thanks for showing the color change, I haven't seen that in decades. Maybe I should give mine a test this summer.

Jason Luttrull It's amazing how well the color change still works. I guess the age of the plastic doesn't affect it.

I had baby spoons with thermochromic rubber from 2008 that don’t work anymore, so your lucky it works 30 some odd years later.
I think my brother-in-law is Zartan!!! He is often seen dragging boxes of junk home and turns funny colors in the sun.

Ok zandar
I had zartan when I was a kid.. Still gutted I was daft enough to pass my toys on as I got older.. Would love to still have this one...
A) The first time I witnessed the color change in person was in Kindergarten. 2) I remember when I realized it was a cowl and not his hair, I was today years old.
Zartan was one of my faves as a kid. I wanted to see how far he could change colors and put him on top of a lamp. He melted. I was devastated. I bought another one recently, but he has lost the color-change ability. He's still my favorite.

Must've been back in the days cuz anything could melt close to those light bulbs back then 😂 that's how I know ur telling the truth
Zartan was actually the founder of black metal, more specifically war/goat metal. His war paint influenced bands like Beherit, Blasphemy and Sarcofago to name a few. A legend.

LOL
His name was an anagram of Tarzan. He was actually modeled off of Gene Simmons!
That's so weird, I don't remember getting the dumpster part of this vehicle set. I do remember that my chameleon stayed together pretty well too, but maybe that's because I wasn't turning it into junk on the regular. He looks like Richard D James with that disguise on! I thought he was a great concept as a kid even though it didn't make much sense. I guess it was the intrigue and oddity about him.
my favorite gi joe character. always wanted this figure cause of the color changing. so cool!
Hands down my favorite from the Joe line when I was a kid.
Got this guy when I was 5 for Christmas. I couldn't figure out the swamp skier and didn't care much for it but zartan was great. Shame he's so expensive now. I have one currently but he's less than stellar
my first vehicle figure ever! had no idea who it was, as with the other figures I had. stumbled upon the cartoon one day, and completely emptied my toy box to show everyone I had the guys on TV!lol
84-85 were my boon years for getting joes. this was one of them.
this holds up as one of your best reviews. I love zartan and this does the figure and character justice.

Memory Lane Good Lord I remember opening this cotton picking toy I remember tearing into zartan and putting them stickers on and making them change colors putting them on his little Skipper skier thing playing in the creek behind Grandma's house with him and the GI Joe hovercraft no other time like the '80s

Man I wish I was born in the 70's
He would change color to blend in with his surroundings. It was perfect camouflage but if you hit them with direct sunlight he will lose his ability to blend in with his surroundings. He can also change his voice. And of course disguise himself as somebody else.
My favorite G.I. Joe figure of all time. He was the first figure I bought when I decided to start collecting vintage G.I. Joes. Great review as always Bryan.

Chris Michalec Thank you! That's a good one to start with.
Always one of my top favorites. Zartan is the only character that came with a vehicle that I didn't care when I broke or lost the vehicle. I mean if you had a moray, and you lost the lampray no big deal, but if the vehicle broke you really didn't care that you still have the driver you wanted another vehicle, but zartan was so amazing. And a side note that is probably the coolest pistol in all of GI Joe
i didn't come across too many Zartans in my childhood
This was the first gi Joe you I ever got and I was hooked
This was definitely my favorite Joe growing up. I think I lost at least 3 because of the color change.
Wow! Still changes color! Miss mine.
Zartan was the line i drew in the fantastical GI Joe sand - i was like, "OK i'll go along with it this one time but then you gotta get back to making army men" - they didn't, and i grew up
Loved this figure as a kid. I always thought the Chameleon was a ROTJ speeder bike knockoff at best.
Buenas noches Muy buen video, está conmadres, good review
2nd time watching this review...Zartan is easily one of the best characters/figures of the whole line...
I had a comic book with Zartan, but don't remember the plot. I also had 2 comics with Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes remember one of them died ,I think it was Snake Eyes. Probably the best comic book I owed. I remember reading them till they fell apart.
even tho he is odd as fuck as a para-military intelligence/espionage unit...zartan is on the short list of best gi.joe figures period. i loved the Dreadnaughts and this guy was the best one hands down. tons of features. Your right he feels like an incomplete mish mosh of different ideas (tho i disagree with you on his gimmicks and vehicle, i still to this day think they are awesome) they all convalesce into one of the best toys the series ever produced. I always had the impression that zartan took inspiration from superhero comics..he would fit in as an enemy to people like spider-man or punisher. one of the figures i wanted the most but alas never could find him on store shelves.
Why does zartan's file card have g i joe when the dreadnought file card says the enemy
Zartan was my favorite. But the swamp skier was flimsy. I imagine there's a lot of crocs and pythons in the swamps of where zartan is from. hasbro could've included something a little for more secure for him.
Cool! I have the same one from 1984!
so the "last" joe con was last year, but with the release of the new 6" line will there be anymore?
I had him and his siblings. Temperature change made them change color. Warmer temperatures made them turn blue, colder temperatures made them turn grey.
I have one of these, however the parts for the skier got lost long ago.
I had it” & all Cobras & G.I. Joe action figures👍🏽 Nice clip love the original..

@HCC788

Really? Zandar only changed once? I would like to know what causes the color changing plastic to stop working, because some of mine work better than others. Science needs to answer that question!
@rtd1409
8 жыл бұрын
Yeah might be the conditions the figures were stored in and other factors such as the smog here in LA messing up all sorts of things in that era esp plastics. I think the reason the color change figures were welded shut was so that when the material changed color on one side it would continue around to the other as a chemical reaction perhaps? I leave it to you HC788 to hack this mystery! Then we have the late 1986 and 1987 brittle plastic syndrome on both figures and vehicles. And how about a "Mail Away Month" review promoting a different mail-away each week. Keep up the good work your legions support you!
If hasbro made the chameleon based on a jet ski, and small fan boat hybrid it would have worked better.
You won't believe this.... but I found Zartans face mask in my old school papers my mom saved from Kindergarten. In a old shoe box. I instantly recognized it. From has to be 35+ years ago
I think my love of Zartan too came from Larry Hama. I just realized something my child did not pick up on. Zartan used his holographic tech to impersonate the real Ripcord, uniform and all. Yet, the Joes were able to remove his clothing to treat his wounds and put on pajamas. Ripcord was dressed in Zartan's clothing; was Zartan then naked, projecting the hologram around himself? I think, even though it showed his ability to generate clothing visually, he knew he had to put on Ripcord's uniform, as evidenced by Doc remarking how the blood pattern did not match the injuries. Great review. I loved the swamp skier and the physical mask engaged my suspension of disbelief for his uniform being camouflaged. It also helped that I would put Sallah's robe or the Cairo Swordmen's robe over him when he had the mask on, and the chameleon was disassembled. The WHALE was prominent in quite a few missions so the swamp skier saw a lot of play. I even had a cardboard Zartan's lair.
Could have done without the swamp skier, wish they gave him more masks and his compound bow from the comics
zar" tan" he gets a tan .. this is one of the last joes i remember
Few questions about the chest and back part being sealed. Does the color changing plastic work on the inside if the chest or back when pried apart? Does the plastic change color on or in a broken area? Also are the parts held together with a glue or with a Ultrasonic welding system? Answering some of these questions can help with the unanswered question of why Zartan, Zandar and Zarana can't be disassembled.
I'm looking for Zartan parts. Mine has one theigh pad, need the handle bars and 2 back skies for the cameleon. If you HCC have any spare or you, my fellow fans. Let me know maybe an accord can be struck.
I just found my Zartan a couple weeks ago. His O ring is busted so I guess I won't be able to repair him. :(. Anyone know of a way to fix this?
@HCC788
7 жыл бұрын
There are ways to do it, but their are not easy. Chief 321 was able to cut the pieces apart. I have also heard you can put the torso in boiling water and melt the glue. I don't know if that works.
Hoboism is nothing to be made fun of. I've seen its effects at my local market. It needs treatment rather than being made fun of as a junk pulling person. I couldn't help myself. I had almost all of these figures. Sold em all in a yard sale in 94 or so. Wish I still had em tho... Broken cod pieces, thumbs, and all!
thank u HoodedCobraCommander788 these videos r great i just found an old box of my uncles gi joes there are 3 zartans is that rare?
Great review, HCC788! I wanted to share an experience I had with my Zartan figure as a child: A friend of mine and I were playing with the toy in the snow, and ended up burying Zartan in the snow for several minutes. After retrieving Zartan from the the snow, my friend and I were shocked to discover that the color-changing areas turned a dark blue! Not sure if you have an extra figure you can try this on sometime, but it might be cool to see if that still works! Keep up the great work, sir!
Hmmmm...that's funny I never had any problems with the knee pads falling off my figure they always stayed on cool review man

Tikifire's Retro Clubhouse Huey, Dewey and Louie? I meant Winken, Blinken, and Nod. Good luck completing your Zartan! Some parts are easier to find than others. I found that out the hard way. Also, watch for loose o-rings, because they're really hard to replace. Cheers!
@tikifire

HoodedCobraCommander788 Yeah, mine busted and his leg hook was corroded so I tried replacing that and one leg cracked, the other broke completely and had a rusted screw. I've got another one on the way so I'm going to have to try and crack my original open very carefully and try to piece him back together using parts from the other.

As a kid, I lost my Zartan or he was hiding and I could never find him. lol
Great review!
Just a heads up for you folks out there replacing the rubber bands or what I like to call the Fel-Pro seals and the GI joes the zartan and his brother are made out of different plastic and so they tend to fuse together after doing 66 Jose and cobras only two we're extremely tough to separate
I would always take the skis off and make it like his version of a swoop or speeder bike from Star Wars.
Both of mine still change color...tested it yesterday
Best figure, since snow job with the skis
I recently purchased Zandar for 10 bucks...legs were separated from body...i didn't know the body was glued...i used a razor blade to split one side open...i was successful changing thr o ring...
sadly, the audio in this video is cracking all over the place, any plans on redoing at least the audio if not the entire review?

The make up, long hair, insanity, and British accent was inspired by young Ozzy Osbourne.

HoodedCobraCommander788 I collected them till around Issue 100 I was 13 by then. That how I discovered G.I.Joe/ I lived in rural area we did not have the cartoon but the general store carried the comic. When I stared buying it the owner of the store always made sure there was a copy for me.
i don't understand the issue with creating a character that has a severe psychological disease. i have never read the comic books, so i don't know if that character trait was properly portrayed. Did they touch on Zartan's illness in the comic or did they just say he was schizophrenic because of his ability to assume different personalities as part of his being a master of disguise?
How could you not like his pet Grasshopper?
First time attending the con.
"Mystic Martial Arts" almost always means ninjitsu or ninja in G.I. Joe terms.
had zandar and zarana too
"The junk book floats.' Check that out." HoodedCorbraCommander788 02/15 -
I always thought that Zartan in disguise looked more like Kenny Loggins, myself. This is one of those characters that I absolutely loved as a kid but don't really care that much about as an adult. I'm 100% with you on preferring GI Joe to be more grounded in reality. All of the science fiction and fantasy elements seemed more suited for Star Wars or He-Man, not GI Joe.
I melted my Zartan. He had lost the ability to change color in the sun, so I placed him on top of a lampshade with a 100 watt light bulb turned on. I was lucky I didn't burn the house down, but Zartan was reduced to a lump of smelly burnt plastic.
10:41 I got the early version of his file card
so how much do you think the toys would cost if it came out today?...in Denmark it was called "action force"..

With inflation, triple the price. So $9 a regular figure.
Awesome 👏 😎
Nice job commander
A Zartan review? I don't know any Zartan!
I need one!
I always thought that hood was his hair
Basically Heavy Metal rocking roll group KISS' missing member
i think it's funny that Zartan has a bit of a muffin top. His torso looks similar to mine. LOL He looks a little out of shape for an action figure.
The Dreanoks were my favorite.
Where's Zartan? thought you were reviewing Zartan? lol
I am about to get zartan
21:15 um excuse me sir I love zandar so you just back up off my boy lol.
I liked Zartan and Zarana a lot better than Zandar.

Where are you zartan.? Alien. And lack O nipples. I could end the video here. Hi Larry us!
wow, it really does seem Jesus and it's cronies are master of disguise.
ZARTAN TARZAN Those 2 letters "T" and "Z" are swapped.
