I remember watching this special as a kid.We talking 5th grade the winter of 87 rite here. Nobody gave Leonard a chance but He proved them wrong after this fight and also proved why He was fighter of the decade

Great watching this as it was back in 1987. I was a big Hagler fan but always liked Leonard as well.

Who doesn't remember this like it was yesterday?What history showed was that it wasn't two fighters "over the hill."A great night in my life looking back and one that I definitely won't forget.Ray Leonard arguably IMO was the best pound for pound in boxing history. NO ONE could have not fought as long as he did and step in the ring with(at the time)the most feared puncher in boxing history.I had a feeling that Leonard would beat him and after round two I kept telling my friends that I was right.

I didn't know about this buildup back around the time of the actual fight,i wasn't into boxing then like i am now but i still wanted to see this fight. Great to find out that there was such an in-depth look at such a high profile fight. Highlight of this buildup is towards the end where there was a very interesting panel discussion. Having two of my favorite boxing commentators side by side was great,Alex walluw and Gil Clancy. Both of their insights on the fight were great. Gil Clancy was just as good as a commentator as he was a trainer. Very interesting to see him here as he was to become a fill-in commentator for HBO years later.

Awesome upload. I feel bad for Hearns. He really helped make both Hagler and Leonard great and they just did not stop showing him getting KOed .

Hagler was amazing

Boy, SRL retires after Olympics, after Duran 1, AFTER Kevin HOWARD, After Hagler, after Durann III, after Terry Norris, after Camacho. Leonard has retired more times than he has belts. SRL is the Sinatra of boxers.

I always thought Marvin Hagler over trained for the fight and his muscles seems really tight which makes you slow late in the fight. His shoulders were really tight and muscular which makes the arms heavy. Marvin should have fought Leonard in a rematch. I think Marvin should have gone for the knockout right away.

@Hecabill are u kidding? Leanord fought a smart fight, he made hagler chase him and it worked. Plus they had some great exchanges, especially wen leanord was against the ropes it was a battle. He outsmarted hagler and fought the way he always did, respect to both guys but in reality nobody gave leanord the slightest chnce of winning and he proved every1 wrong.

This was a true Superfight. In 1982 they were ranked as the top 2 fighters in boxing and both avoided any losses. Actually I felt at the time both were undefeated. Hagler had 2 draws and 2 losses in which were wrong. He rematched all 4 and knocked them out. Leonard avenged his loss to Duran and made him quit. Then they mention age. Hagler was 32 and Leonard 30. Both were once in a generation and I felt they were still barely in their primes.

Hagler definitely lost the first Willie Monroe fight. He never disputed that decision however he did the others, Leonard, Watts. Leonard was close, I thought it was a draw, the Watts fight although I haven't seen it is widely regarded as a robbery decision. Of the 2 draws I've watched the Antuofermo fight when Hagler challenged, he was way short changed, he won at least 10 rounds of the 15 rounds in that fight.

Agreed, Camacho had tons of heart - never knocked out I believe in like 80 fights or so. Incredible accomplish by itself.

Leonard hearns Duran and Benitez all won titles at different weights However Hagler stayed in his middleweight comfort zone. He never fought saad Muhammad at light heavyweight. Hagler should have beat Leonard inside seven rounds after all middleweight is his home ground his comfort zone. Leonard’s hand speed and superior boxing brain beat haglers brute force slugging. Brain beat brawn. Both great fighters but that’s why Leonard in modern times is the best pound for pound boxer and Hagler is not.

The thing that is fascinating about Sugar is that he knew how to get inside of your head and intimidate without menace or aggressive talk. Duran knew that he won the first fight but realized Sugar took his best fighting his fight. So the second Duran already had doubt. I believe Hagler had in his head that Sugar took punches from Duran and Hearns and of course battered Hearns. Those first few rounds Leonard stuck to his game plan. Hagler seemed confused and although he says he was robbed I also believe that when he tagged Sugar hard and got caught with flurries he lost focus..

Camacho was over the hill too so it evens out. add to the fact Hector was really a blown up 130 pounder and his accomplishment is that much more remarkable! Everyone thought Leonard was going pursue Hector and that Hector would run and instead out pops a fighting mad Hector Camacho. it was Hector's last hurrah, his last great performance. The way he hanlded leonard that nite is what boxing is about, reminiscent of the Loy fight in 82.

But Hagler was also over the hill. He had 66 hard fights behinde him. I like Hagler, the guy would had to make the hard way, the worker. But a prime Ray Leonard... Man that was something.

If u have the Feb 1986 issue of World Boxing, page 22, you'll see that Hagler postponed the Mugabi bout becuz of broken nose in sparring and diagnosed as having ruptured disc, sings that Hagler's body was in terrible shape

I believe Sugar Ray Leonard was about 40 years old when he fought Camacho, he hadn't fought for 6 years, Rays real prime ended in 1984, he fought Camacho in 1997. It's really hard to take your comments seriously. Ray's last great fight was againt Hagler in 1987, and they actualy were both past their primes even then. You aren't making any sence son.

I never chose learnord to win against hagler...It was a known fact that Ray went up in weight just to stay away from Pryor. I truly believe Aaron Pryor, would've knocked Learnord out.

I've watched the fight with the sound off and being completely unbiased have Hagler winning by 1 to 2 rounds......

Hagler - Leonard was a great fight, that's the meaning. It's doesn't really matter who got the decision. It was to close to call.

That means that the champion keeps the title. Hagler did enough to win. Conversely if Leonard was champ he did enough to win.

I was actually thinking of light-heavy when I made that comment. He was happy to take on smaller guys so why not be brave and move up? Michael Spinks called him out a few times and he refused to step up. I know he was a little short but if he was as desperate for recognition as he claimed he should have taken the chance.

I dont know Camacho that well either. I was just pointing out that wasnt Hector in the ring so it evens out. btw, the Hagler fight has no meaning

(From below) add in Hearns & Leonard fought in jr/light middleweight before going to middleweight but Hagler at middleweight didn't have a super middleweight division to move into, that division didn't really take off until the end of the 1980's.... so he'd have had to jump 2 divisions in one go & as you move up from light fly to heavy the disparity in size, weight, height & reach increases greatly per division as you go up..

Seems when looking the still pictures one can see Ray's skin looks rather interesting for a 30yr old man. He was much more built up while training. Sometimes as high as 170lb...interesting. He also weighed 150lb after the fight....When you put all that together....

I agree, Katz was on point, noted Hagler's reflexes being slowed and his inactivity too, talked about Sugar Ray wanting this fight and seeing the openings that Mugabi had exposed and saying Ray's style was better to beat Marvin using movement as opposed to other fighters trying to come at Hagler. Katz was often a good analyst of boxing for many years.

He was actually closer to 31 and Hagler's real age was closer to 35. The point I was trying to make was if you look at Ray's face it looks like he has a case of adult acne...think Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire...or for the generation before....Ben Johnson and numerous other athletes at the time. P.E.D .....

He had recognition from hardcore fans it was the casuals he's talking about, at that time fighting Leonard was like fighting Floyd now, you'd make a lot, lot more money & at the end of the day these guys are fighting for a living, why fight a guy for peanuts. Leonard was built up and promoted right from the beginning of his career as shown by Duran's cut in their 1st bout, in that bout Duran was the more accomplished guy to hardcore fans yet Leonard got the bulk of the cash cos casuals knew him.

Sugar's a stud. But being from Boston I gotta go with Hagler. But I do like Ray more except for when the two met in the ring.

Mike Katz, Gil Clancey and Wallau were all prophetic in their own way. Wallau-very close decision after hard fight. Clancey-Someday Marvin's gonna walk up the steps and not have it anymore. Katz-Deep down Ray knows how to beat Marvin.

Neil Hodge Yeah , Ray was perhaps the greatest welterweight ever ( along with Sugar Ray Robinson) but he would never have challenged a peak Hagler at middleweight. Leonard knew very well that he was taking the opportunity to catch a Marvin Hagler whose best as a fighter was behind him .

Gage Plake Hagler was old when he fought Ray,even so,Ray didnt beat him,it was a draw at best for Ray.Leonard would NEVER have fought Marvin in 83,84,85,or 86,Hagler would've knocked him out.Ray showed he can stand and fight but against Marvin he ran.You cant win a fight by running.

+MaxTV Marvin was at the end of a much longer and tougher career than Ray. Marvin also was getting old and he hadn't been particularly active over the previous few years ; his fight with Mugabi had been just over one year prior to theLeonard fight. Ray realised that Marvin had slipped from his peak when he watched the Hagler v Mugabi fight and this is the only reason that he chose to challenge Marvin. Both of these guys remain two of my all-time favourites butHagler trumps Leonard as a MW whilst Leonard remains one of the two top welterweights to have ever lived IMO.

Beautiful man and fighter. Hagler was cheated by the Boxing establishment in delaying the arrival of his greatness , rewarding his rival Leonard with a dubious decision but Hagler was rewarded by the Boxing Gods with superhuman power, resilience and skill in the ring and he had such humbleness and humility outside the ring he was so respected. The Leonard decision may be in doubt but his legacy will never be in doubt. My hero, my inspiration in so many ways .RIP the greatest boxer ever not just GOAT of middleweight. I will miss you.

Hagler was only 5'9" compared to Leonard's 5'10", way to small for super middleweight and anyway it wasn't a real recognised weight class til the late 80's so 5'9" Hagler would have had to become a light heavyweight. Are you young or new to boxing...

I dont need to do any research i was an amateur then & followed the pro's as it was on tv a lot more then although it seems to be on the up in Europe at the moment. I remember staying up to watch Duran Leonard 1 and trust me there was no calls for Hagler Spinks, the mismatch in size would have been funny, hagler ended his career at 160lbs, Spinks was a heavy before then, its not a pissin contest i just know i'm right on this one but i'm big enough to admit being wrong but im not here.

There is no right or wrong here. All I did was opine that he should have moved up if he was that desperate for recognition. You obviously feel he shouldn't have and again, that's your opinion. I never once claimed there was a clamour for a fight between him and Spinks. There also wasn't a clamour for Spinks to take on Holmes either. I always though Ali Berbick was more like Hagler leonard instead of Camacho leonard Ray just didnt have enough experience dealing with crafty cagey guys like Hector (a multiple title champion). In short, Ray was out of his league and it showed. He shouldve had more fights against vaulable oppsition like M. Nunn, instead of guys like Lalonde, Howard, Green, & Kalule becuz he didnt, he finally met up with disaster vs Norris, Hector.

The rematch was offered in 1990...15 million dollars was on the table for Marvin. Leonard retired after his fight with Hagler....in May 87. He returned 6 weeks after Hagler officially retired from boxing to challenge Lalonde (LMAO). Marvin was nearly 36 by then and was almost 38 when Leonard asked about a rematch. Let's stop using Hagler's official age...everyone in boxing knew his real age....Manny Steward...Angelo Dundee...even Leonard himself knew Hagler's real age. They first met in 1973...

Exactly why would a welterweight going up to fight a middleweight after a 5 year layoff stand and fight? That would be what we call "stupid". You know, like fighting orthodox when your a southpaw for the first 3 rounds and basically giving them away. This was a boxing clinic, not a toughman competition.And ya can't be a top 5 middleweight of all time if you can't knockout an old welterweight, who never fought middleweight before and only had 1 fight in the previous 5 years. Please.

Dude, believe me when I tell you you shouldn't be trying to pull rank with me. I don't carry my knowledge in a transparent bag. He could have moved up instead of whingeing about other fighters from a COUPLE of divisions down not moving up to meet him.
