Hazbin Hotel Interview: Erika Henningsen on Playing Charlie (& Being Charlie)

There’s a multitude of reasons why Hazbin Hotel became Prime Video’s largest global debut for a new animated series. An especially big one, however? That voice cast. Creator Vivienne Medrano and her team hit it big casting every single character in the show, but there’s one in particular that’s a staggeringly perfect match; Erika Henningsen is Charlie Morningstar.
Hazbin Hotel is largely set in Hell where Henningsen’s Charlie, the daughter of Lucifer (voiced by Jeremy Jordan), is fed up with Heaven’s treatment of the souls in Hell. Due to overpopulation, once a year, an army of angels led by Adam (Alex Brightman) swoop down from Heaven and exterminate as many sinners as possible. In an effort to save her people and give them the second chance she thinks they deserve, Charlie creates the Hazbin Hotel, a place where sinners can be rehabilitated and then ascend to Heaven.
In celebration of Hazbin Hotel Season 1’s epic run on Prime Video, a run that sparked an enormous diehard fanbase and deserves some serious Emmy season love, Henningsen joined me for a Collider Ladies Night chat to revisit her road to Hazbin, to discuss her experience bringing Charlie to screen, and to tease what the future holds for the character.

What's your favorite Charlie line from Hazbin Hotel Season 1??

My favorite line from Charlie was when she told everyone during the trust fall session in episode three, and later in episode eight prior to the battle, that she loves them all so much. As a Christian, I find that deeply touching. Charlie loving everyone under her wing, however messed up they may be. In fact, she loves them so much that she's willing to forgive them (like she did with Sir Pentious) and even risk her life to protect them. This strikes me as Christ-like. God bless people like Charlie!

Her comment of "I can be worthy of being here, and also be a beginner" was so powerful. As someone with OCD I hide so much behind fear but I'll hold her perspective at heart from now on!

I think Erika might be a dino lover. Hehe. Jurrasic Park and Land Before Time references within the same interview? I'm calling it. Now I need to know what her fav dino is. Also... What is that drop on Season 2?! Is our princess getting into some darker territory? Oh, the anticipation!
I’ve neglected every other show because I can’t stop rewatching hazbin hotel. It’s my new favorite comfort show.

Lol, I think I saw a transformers fic with that premise once, where Soundwave did the singing. I would absolutely believe that Charlie (and by extension her VA) would be able to soothe zombies through music.

Alex is currently in Spamalot on Broadway which is why he hasn't been at many panels or in promotional stuff for Hazbin so I doubt he'll be interviewed like this, but if it makes you feel better, I'm almost certain Pentious will be back based on what happens with his character at the end of season one (I'm keeping this vague so that no one gets spoiled)

@Caroline28483 Zestial's voice actor (even though he's A side character) is, and I may be wrong, also in Spamalot, so he also doesn't really travel to Comic cons and interviews with the crew.

Same. I was 3 when the first film came out and I must have seen a few scenes when it began airing on TV because for a long time I would have really intense nightmares where I had to hide from dinosaurs.

The novel it was based on leaned in heavily on the sci fi horror genre.

I have what I think would be a good question to add to these, so for a hazbin question you should ask them like: “what’s your favorite music artist,and who do you think would be ____’s favorite music artist” bc it’d be interesting to see what music they think their characters would spend their time listening to.
Conversation with other survivors would be important.

Hang on I've watched this show more times than I can think of When did Charlie talk to her mom?! Also it was Val he said "well this just got interesting" I remember cause just before we see Angel raise an eyebrow

In the pilot, we see a clip of Charlie sending a voicemail to her mom because Lilith didn’t pick up😢
