HAYWIRE TWIST, IS IT STRONG

In this video I test the strength of haywire twist eyes. Lots of anglers use haywire twist eyes in their wire leaders and most, swear by them. See how they hold up to being pulled apart by a winch.

When I got stationed in Southern California in the early '70s, I studied up on saltwater fishing. The knowledge back then was to use at least 6 haywire twists on the steel leaders and then 4+ barrels was to finish it off and hold it in place. It worked pretty good for shark fishing back then.

Only really have to worry about tying it correctly with lighter # wire. But I always tie haywire then barrel wraps. I've seen haywires were there is just loosely wrapped barrels then tight barrels and under heavy pressure the tight barrels slide all the way to the eye of the hook.

When I use steel leaders it's usually multi-stran and crimped sleeves. So I have to defer to those guys fishing the heavier stuff.
