Hayward Pool Heater LO Code? Watch This!!

Are you experiencing a LO code on your Hayward H-Series pool heater? If so, give this video a watch for a few basic tips on how to work through the issue yourself before calling a service tech for a simple fix.
LO Code Details - When a Hayward H-Series pool heater is not firing and displaying LO as seen in the video, the heater is functioning properly as it should. It is not faulty in and of itself and it is doing exactly what it should be doing in this operational state. A LO code is telling you that there is some external issue in your pump and filtration system causing a reduced amount of water flow too LOW (Hence LO) for the heater to fire safely. The #1 reason for the LO code is that the filter is plugged up and it needs to be backwashed and rinsed if a sand filter and, if a cartridge filter, then your cartridge is in need of a cleaning. There can always be other reasons too like clogged pump baskets, clogged skimmer baskets, or a bad pump seal or motor but always know that, when you see the LO code displayed with the heater not firing, the heater is not at fault and it is telling you, through it's on board diagnostics, that some external issue is causing the LO code to display and shut the heater down.

    The unit heats up fast and is super quiet. It looks fancy kzread.infoUgkxl8Od2BvnGbn1ffwqsuFXW0QnmcZgMiVY and can be kept in the living room. It gets hot within a split second of turning on the unit. The build quality is exceptionally good and is safe to be around kids and pets. This one is super quiet and can be kept on while in office meetings, my wife loved it. It shows the temperature right on the unit which is very useful and adding a rotating feature helps to heat up the surrounding, so other people will not fight with you for heat. It is right as described in the description..!! Definitely recommend!!

    LO stands for Limit Open, meaning one of the limit switches is not closing to complete the circuit. This could be the water pressure switch, either hi-limit, or the vent pressure switch. It doesn't always mean a water flow problem.

    I've backwash amd rinsed 3 times since opening pool and still it trips for LO as soon as it tries to fire then after the igniter stops clicking, LO goes away so I'm thinking this is more the signs of a Lead Open situation which requires some diagnosing with a multimeter to see which component is failing and needs replacing

    With the calls I get, I'd argue the number 1 cause is the heater bypass is on, #2 gas is off, #3 dirty filter. Heaters should be serviced often. At least once a year. Spiders love to build webs in the gas orifices. Rodents love to knaw on wiring. Thanks for the video.

    I had the LO code when I was opening the pool. Everything in manual and comments for this post pointed to Low water flow in the heater or water pressure switch problem etc.. Took off the front panel on the heater. Turned out the company that closed the pool turned off the Gas, using the small gas shutoff knob inside the heater. I thought there would of been a different code, indicating no Gas, but got the LO code. Anyways, when the small gas knob was turned on, heater turned on.

    I got the exact same heater installed a couple days ago and I turned it on for the second time today to test it out again. It turned on without any issues, but I got the LO code after putting the heater back into standby mode (I only had it on for max 5 mins). Is this normal? I backwashed 3 days ago and the skimmer & pump are relatively clean.

    I currently have my Haward Pump set to pump on high (80%) for 4 hours during the middle of the day to avoid making noise when the neighbors are home. For the remainder of the day, it operates on 40% to be quiet, but still keep the pool circulating water. Am I able to leave the Hayward Heater on pool mode all the time during my schedule? If I understand your explanation correctly, during the low periods, it will just display the LO code and not heat. Then when the pump goes into the high setting, it will kick back on and heat the pool. Will this cause any harm to the heater, or can I leave the heater on "pool" mode all the time and let the pump govern it?

  • @touchedbythesunpools904

    @touchedbythesunpools904

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello! Thanks a ton for your comment and question. Indeed you can just leave your pump running as it is and leave the heater in POOL mode and it will kick on and off as needed when it has enough water pressure running through it. Keep in mind though however that, when the heater is not running, your pool will cool off and then, when it turns back on, it will start back up. It is always best, at least in our service area of Rochester, NY, to maintain temperature in your pool versus letting it fluctuate significantly.

    Just installed mine and had the gas guys come out today. I got the LO error code. My heater is about 6-8 feet above my pool elevation. Could this be that the pressure switch needs to be adjusted for the negative pressure? If so, how is this done?

  • @touchedbythesunpools904

    @touchedbythesunpools904

    The height of the heater above the pool shouldn't make a difference at all because your pump system runs the whole pool at the same pressure across the board regardless of how high it is installed to an extent. 6-8ft is easily manageable with any properly sized pool pump. Have you made sure your filter is backwashed and rinsed if you have a sand filter or that your cartridges are clean if you have a cartridge filter?

    That was my next step per your video. I’m a brand new pool owner, so I know just enough to get in trouble. The pool company that installed it is no help and I think from everything I have read they should have installed the chlorinator in the line after the heater. I’ll backwash and see if that corrects it. Now let me read how to do that lol. Thanks for the quick reply

  • @touchedbythesunpools904

    @touchedbythesunpools904

    @@paratel27 100% the chlorinator should be installed after the heater and it should 100% have a check valve installed between the heater and chlorinator. If that's not the case, we would strongly recommend that you contact your installer and have them read the installation manual which states exactly that.

    Your pressure switch CAN need to be adjusted to work with different height differences, but usually it is the gas on a new install. How? I see this on lots of new installs, if the gas man checks the gas pressure with the heater not running (static) ,he can not test the column pressure required to run the heater. a good rule of thumb is a column pressure of 7-9 with the heater running 9 at least (Hayward H250 gas heater). static column pressure is not the same with the heater running and therefor can be misleading. I would also recommend adding a galvanized T with a 4" nipple and an end cap, between the regulator and heater as a debris trap. and never use that yellow flex hose agas heater. hope this helps some one.27 year tech Orange Beach, Al
