Haydn - Te Deum

Музыка

F. J. Haydn - Te Deum
BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and the BBC Singers
conducted by Sir Andrew Davis
The Last Night Of The Proms 1996
MONO SOUND
WARNING: Sound is poor. This is from an old VHS tape with no Hi-Fi track. I did what I could, but ultimately the only thing that would really help is a better quality source. Set expectations appropriately and enjoy the atmosphere and the performance.
There was video damage from 7:03 to 7:12, which I have patched with a few shots from elsewhere (the cello section, a wide angle on the platform, and Davis conducting from behind) - not perfect but less distracting than a snowstorm or a black screen.

What a splendid performance, with a large but well-disciplined choir and the sprightly direction of Davis.

Everything of Haydn is glorious. Haydn lives, rules.

This Te Deum is an absolute marvel. There is more spiritual power and joy in eight minutes than in all of Bach's cantatas put together. It's like a distillation of the late Haydn masses--themselves supreme masterpieces. And--speaking from personal experience--it's an absolute gas to sing.

So glad you're (mostly - somebody did a thumbs down... there's always one, I guess) enjoying this! My twelve-year-old self, sitting up there in the audience somewhere in the Gallery, would be gobsmacked to know that twenty years later that concert is still being enjoyed by people all over the world. :)

This is an excellent version of this piece, which is one of my favorite Haydn compositions! I appreciate being able to see the lyrics in English subtitles as well. Well done!!

Sang this in Woodstock last night and will be doing so tonight as well 23iii2024. Hope to acheive the joy and vitality of this Proms performance in a small town near Oxford with not a very large church!

@@JLeeGraham This part is also a good example of Haydn the consumate master of choral writing; the open aaaaa vocals are ideal for singing the passage work.

The power of the unison passages in the first section is breathtaking. The adagio is sublime. One of the best renditions of this piece that I've heard.

Does anyone else notice how this piece a)pretty much sounds like Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus"?

Uh, no, having sung both, I find that it doesn't sound very much like it at all. Other than both being scored SATB. Go find me the adagio section and the fugue of the Hallelujah Chorus---as many times as I've heard it and sung it, I haven't yet found them.

Hola Jeffrey: As others have said, the two pieces sound nothing alike. I analysed it a bit after reading your comment. I think the reason you say that the Te Deum pretty much sounds like the Hallelujah Chorus is because of the first 3 notes and note values of the first measure that the Orchestra plays that match the first 3 notes of the first measure of the Hallelujah Chorus. Then, when the Chorus enters they sing the same first 3 notes with the same note values. So again, it's only the first 3 notes of the first measure that match the Hallelujah Chorus and then each piece goes their separate ways. The rest of the piece is not at all the same. The HC is in D Major and the Te Deum is in C Major so they're not even in the same keys. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your kind-hearted and thoughtful comment. It's for good folk like you that I trawl through hours of ancient video tapes, and spend my limited spare time transferring and restoring them as best I can. I'm aware that the sound isn't fantastic. I did the best I could with the source material. It's from a twenty-one year-old videotape. It's a wonderful performance, though - and a lot of people really enjoy it, so it's obviously worth doing. If it's no good for you, you're welcome to not listen to it.
