For the 2,400 who gave this a thumbs down, you need to understand that the reason people go to a classical concert is the magic. It's an escape into a world of beauty and art and virtuosity that you just don't experience outside of the auditorium, and a ringtone completely ruins it for everybody. The audience members pay good money to attend. The musicians work hard to prepare. And some knucklehead forgets to silence his phone and BOOM!!! the magic is gone. Hard to get it back. So I can understand how the man was upset and waited until the ringing stopped. He wasn't being rude. He was reacting to the rudeness.

@@tpstrat14 You don't know what you're talking about. It's a classical concert, and just in a very quiet fragment, so silence must be absolute. Whispering is disturbing so nobody talks, just listen, imagine the sound of a cellphone there, it destroys everything. That's not a metal or pop concert where you can scream at your buddy's ear and nothing happens. Even more, concentration for classical music is really much needed, for a solo piano the most, the slightest fail will break everything, so he did absolutely what had to be done.

+RICKY judging by your comment you seem unable to comprehend that people have different tastes. How egocentric are you? I like classical music as well but I don't feel the need to address its superiority over other genres, because objectively there is none. Maybe you'll say "oh, but classical music is much more diverse and has more variety, in regard to time signatures or keys", but that's because you haven't explored any other music. There's plenty of recent music that's just as complex and intricate as classical music. You probably only see what's on the radio and make your judgement by that, not looking any further. Even in classical periods more people listened to folk songs than classical music by a lot. Maybe you should mature and explore music some more before you make such stupid arguments

I've been going to concerts since I was 12 (even played a few! Well, more recitals than concerts, but still!), and at this point, I've seen it all. I've seen the 300-pound man snoring away two rows behind me, or the 20-year-old playing video games on mute with a super bright screen in the row in front of me (it also didn't help that he was dressed for a baseball game), or the countless people who's "whispered conversations" were loud enough to hear 20 seats away. And yes, I've also seen the cellphone ring, and I was fortunate enough to hear it not in the middle of a piece, but at the end of that most serene second movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto just as it came to a close. I was so relaxed... And as upset as I was, I can only imagine how the artists felt, those talented people who spent so many hours working hard to put on their best performance!

People who need to be reachable in case of emergencies. We DON'T KNOW if the cellphone rang because the owner forgot to silence it, or did but has a single contact set to override silencing because there may be all manner of situations in their life which need them to answer the phone immediately. Being on the organ transplant wait list, family member with grave medical issues, being part of emergency services professionally and being called in for a disaster. Just some examples. We don't know what the situation was. I agree that people should silence their phones at concerts or at any other performance or screening, but if that's not possible for them, does that mean they can't go see the orchestra?

  • @justintime2026

@@J0k394 You can set your phone on vibrate or sit in the back. If you can't get creative enough to come up with a solution, then don't go to an orchestra. And in reality, that's almost certainly not what happened here. I play piano myself (not professionally, but I've been learning for about 8 years now) and I would spend hours and hours learning one song. Imagine now the level of dedication and an attention to detail that a professional pianist would put into a piece of music, and then add in the fact that there's hundreds of other people there listening who PAID to be there. Now imagine all of that being thrown out the fucking window cause someone couldn't remember to turn their phone off beforehand (and 9 times out of 10 they'll remind you to turn your phone off at the start of the show, in case it wasn't painfully obvious), and tell me you wouldn't be insulted and disrespected if you were the one performing on that stage.

@@justintime2026 I agree, it's probably someone who forgot. But in case it's not, it's highly pretentious to value a concert over a life or death situation. Some people aren't allowed to set their phone to vibrate because it increases the risk of missed calls. They might put their personal phone on silent but not their calamity phone. We don't know so don't make everyone with valid reasons out to be the devil.

@@J0k394 This is 2019, there are plenty of other ways to alert someone to a call besides making a loud ass noise that everyone else in the concert hall can hear. You can use a smart watch with visual notifications on or something. If you don't care enough to get creative, then don't go to the concert. At the very fucking least sit in the back where everyone can't hear you, though that's still ruining for the experience for those sitting near you so that's still inconsiderate. It's not that the concert is more valuable than their life, it's that the experience of everyone else attending that concert is more important than the experience of that one person who could potentially ruin it for everyone else. No one's life is riding on someone attending an orchestra or staying home.
