Appreciate it fellow trapper! The hay set has definitely been the pay set this year! With the wet weather and heavy ground we had during the beginning part of our trapping a few flat sets and more weather-resistant sets were going to be necessary. In an area with lower population density than many others, it's proved it's worth for sure!

You using hay or straw looks like straw but just want to confirm witch it is..

Waxed dirt is great...in the right type of soil. We trap a lot of HEAVY clay soil and in our experience waxed dirt hasn't given us a distinct advantage during heavy rain events/wet conditions. Dirt holes fill with water and don't drain. Flat sets with covered (by law) lure or bait, such as the hay set or pipe dream set, seem to work best on those heavy clay farms. Waxed dirt may help shed water and keep trap beds from freezing, but we've found calcium chloride works best, and is cheaper/less effort, for those flat sets during freeze/thaw conditions. Dirt holes in loamy or sandy soil for sure!

Bedding trap in solid ground is no fun and having wax dirt that doesn’t pack then coyotes stepping from solid concrete dirt to soft wax dirt is also tough . Looks like hay sets are legit

They’re our favorite to, especially in some of our heavy heavy clay soil.
