Hawthorn - Herb of Myth and Medicine

Hawthorn is a highly renowned tree in Ireland because of the association with the Fairy Folk - the Sidhe. Hawthorn is part of our myths and folklore and also makes a wonderful and potent medicine for the heart. If you would like to know more about it, see below.
I am a Wise Woman herbalist and I grow a herb garden here in Connemara. If you would like to know more about growing and using herbs, have a look at my website and the on-line Introduction to Herbal Medicine course. www.danusirishherbgarden.com/product/an-introduction-to-herbal-medicine-a-6-month-digital-course__trashed/
As a Wise Woman I also follow the Celtic Wheel of the Year and offer a transpersonal training for women to connect to the Divine Feminine and our Plant Allies. If you are interested in healing yourself and building a relationship with the Plant world, have a look at the course.

Getting started working with plants is easy and my books, The Weed Handbooks Volume 1 and Volume 2 can advise how to identify and how to work with wild plants. www.danusirishherbgarden.com/product-category/products/

Hawthorn growing alone is regarded as a Fairy tree and great caution must be taken - do not damage or harm it or remove any part of such a tree.
Hawthorns in the hedgerow offer great heart medicine. You can take a Hawthorn medicine for courage, to feel brave and face up to your challenges. The thorns of the Hawthorn represent protection so that you can open your heart to others without fear of being taken advantage of.
Hawthorn is also a great cardio-vascular and heart tonic and can help with issues such as cholesterol, angina, high blood and low blood pressure, poor circulation and other cardio issues. Hawthorn is extremely safe and gentle as it is very nourishing and toning of the whole system, improving elasticity of the vessels and toning the tissues. As Hawthorn can also help to break up fat he can be seen as a digestive herb as well. Hawthorn can also be regarded as a nervine as he has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system and often sleep is improved.
As Hawthorn is a nourishing herb the medicine does not remain for long in the body and therefore Hawthorn is slow acting and gentle. Do not take Hawthorn if you are taking beta-blockers or blood thinning medication. ALWAYS INFORM YOUR DOCTOR AND SEEK YOUR DOCTOR'S ADVICE IF YOU DECIDE TO INCLUDE HAWTHORN FOR YOUR HEART HEALTH
To make my medicine I collected the blossoms and young leaves in May and made a tincture and later in the year, August and September, I collected the berries and made a tincture. I have now combined the two tinctures to make a whole plant medicine. A generally recommended dose would be 2-4ml two to three times a day in a little water.
REMEMBER - ALWAYS SEEK YOUR DOCTOR'S ADVICE IF YOU DECIDE TO INCLUDE HAWTHORN FOR YOUR HEART HEALTH.

Dr. John Campbell (KZreadr) has a good answer as to heart issues. I myself just had triple bypass and am recovering. Up until September of this year I was fine. Running a business being active. On September 13 one day before my birthday I WAS IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM WITH CRUSHING CHEST PAINS. 18 months prior, I passed a nuclear stress test and received a clean bill of health from my cardiologist! I think it's the (jab)!

The hawthorn is probably full of Geraniol, its the terpene that we associate with roses and it has the effect of making us feel happier and "in-love" (bubbly mood) Very good for the weariness of Picean (pisces) energy. Rich source of vitamin C too! Never done it with vodka before. I usually do this with apple cider vinegar, honey and hawberries. Also didn't realise that you could use the flowers the same way. However, I was brought up to eat the young leaves straight off of the trees. They taste nutty. My mum told me that the leaves are called "nuts in May". As in the song "here we go gathering nuts in May". Belated birthday wishes

We have one lone Hawthorn tree we planted on the edge of our field. Maybe a fairy will move in! Hope so! I remember all the Hawthorn in the hedges everywhere in Ireland. My Granddad told me stories when I was a child and told me about "fairy trees". He told me they would reroute roads around them. Thanks for the info. Enjoy this beautiful time of the year.

You are right Cynthia - a road was re routed around a lone Hawthorn after a couple of road men had accidents and the machinery kept breaking down. Look up Eddie Lenehan, he is a folklorist who led the campaign. xx

Hello. My name is Malcolm Hawthorne and my ancestors came to America in 1630 when they emigrated from Southwest England. The family name comes from a place called Hawthorne Hill and it is the same line of descendancy as Nathaniel Hawthorne. When my ancestors got to America some of them dropped the w from the name so my legal name is actually Hathorne... Anyway I found your video on the Hawthorne tree and berries very interesting.

For those who don't seem to understand, Terri made a tincture. A few drops per day is the recommended dose. Alcohol is used because it extracts all of the properties from the berries/leaves. Oil can be used to make a tincture but it will not extract all of the properties of the plant.
