I loved your potting technique to add soil and shake it down. I tend to push down but I will try the shaking technique.
Howarthias remind me of the Czech glass beads I use in my jewelry making! Gorgeous light play!
This was one of the nicest and informative videos on Haworthia that I've seen. Really enjoyed it. Only recently bought a couple and have loved them.

@@johnnyAGardening First thing that comes to mind is how best to simulate natural light for optimal growth indoors. While I'm the type of person to try and keep my plants outside as much as possible I live in a climate where we experience all 4 seasons, so I eventually have to bring all my plants inside. I don't want to disturb their expectations too much with this transition, but I also have to utilize space which includes my basement. I understand grow lights are a thing, but I'm not learned enough to tell which lights might be best for the job, if at all. Thanks for the response!
Nice thanks 😊

Hi Johnny. What kind of fertilizer do you sprinkle into the soil for haworthia, lithops, and other mesembs? Thanks for another great video
Many thanks for this very nice and informative video. Your haworthia springbokvlakensis has such clear and plump leaves. Would you mind sharing, how to get such clear and plump leaves? I subscribed to your channel and looking forward to learn more on haworthia from you.
All my Haworthias are potted similarly to Lithops using mostly grit with very little dirt. My mix is composed of chicken/chick grit(both), pumice, and a small portion of garden soil. An 80/20 ratio of grit to soil.
@johnnyAGardening
4 жыл бұрын
That sounds ideal, the mix you use would work well. WE are doing a seperate video on potting mixes for succulents soon. The actual mix depends on the succulent, your climate and your watering habits.
Love your videos - super informative and looking at your passion for these succulents is amazing! Can you tell what fertilizer do you use and whats exactly in the soil mix and why? Thanks!
Good morning
Great videos actually showing what to look for and how to pot is so much more valuable. Is there a particular fertiliser/ commercial mix you would recommend for the home gardener just starting to build a collection of succulents or is it better to do a diy mix. Also great to see an Aussie vid for us soles in the land down under too many of the videos on KZread are international and refer to products we can not always get here.

James uses a pinch of 9 month osmocote and a pinch of lime.
You mentioned using a skirt, what is that? You make repotting and keeping the plant at the top so easy. I’ve been struggling with that so maybe I could use anything to help.

They should not rot with a little water, however try to avoid watering the foliage on the plants to be on the safe side.
Hi John! What kind of fertilizer are you using?
Nice video. How far we can water them?
ola amigo to aqui do brasil pensando vc cultiva essas hawortias na luz do dia ou em grow ????
Hi! thank you for so detailed video! do you water it after you move it in new soil/ pot?
@johnnyAGardening

Good question ....Usually we wait 5 - 7 days just in case of root damage. Then water as normal.
Thank you for these videos. I’m so new to this and so excited to start growing succulents. I tried to find pine bark and it seems like the places I went did not carry bark that was a perfect size for a soil. It was all a medium. Would any type of mulch work for this concoction? Also I can seem to fined River sand. I just found some sandy clay. Would that clay work as a substitute? Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.
@johnnyAGardening
4 жыл бұрын
Try for a sand that does not include clay, so any washed sand that is not sea (beach) sand. As a pine bark substitute, rice husks or course perlite should work. Where are you located ?
@yodouble2
4 жыл бұрын
johnny A Ok thank you. The only perlite I see Putin the stores are from the brand Miraclegro. So I did end up buying some clay that’s grinder into sand. So I will take that back then. So any washed sand that has no clay is what I will look for. I am located out of Fresno California. Central Ca.
Great video! Love the way they look. Mine are grown in a hot Mediterranean climate. I know that watering should be withheld in the peak of summer (July to August in Northern hemisphere), but they are more susceptible to shriveling and drying at that time. Do you have hot summers too? How do you treat them at this time?
@johnnyAGardening
4 жыл бұрын
We have hot summers as well, a Mediterranean climate but more moderate to hot than hot. In very hot summers and as thy are probably in containers which will dry more than if in the ground, I would think a little water once in a while will not hurt them, just don't overdo it. I will have a talk to James Lucas and get back to you.

Can you please know me soul mixture you used for this type of plant, thank you sir.
What potting medium do you use and where can I buy Akadama? Love your tutorials.
@johnnyAGardening
4 жыл бұрын
In the description. As for Akadama, that depends where you live...
Can you re-use the old potting mix, for example, by adding some fertilizer, or treating it somehow? What do you do with all that old soil?
@johnnyAGardening
4 жыл бұрын
Its best to at least mix 50% new soil when repotting, most growers use all new mix, The old soil can be used in the garden or in pots for less fussy plants.
Question: do you think the Haworthia would travel all right. There are some online sales, but I am afraid of the stress of the traveling for them. What do you think. I live in Switzerland.
Love the video and this great plant! Can you tell us what type of fertilizer you are using? Thanks
