Hawking with Belle | Harris Hawk | Falconry

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

From October 16th, Martin & Belle out hawking. Belle flies a ways off and deals with a raven. Martin, a master falconer, talks about how it could end badly for the raven. Though Belle was a little over ideal flying weight, she still made many attempts to catch jackrabbits. Martin discusses how and why monitoring her weight is so important. He also discusses the need to work with a bird best suited to the type of region you will be working with the bird in and the quarry available.
Throughout their wander, Belle makes many attempts to catch jackrabbits. She does get fooled by a couple smart ones, but not deterred, she also catches more than one. The jackrabbits she caught will provide food to the sick and injured animals we care for.

Our Mission
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.

Fantastically interesting in real time like this...thank you. I learned so much about all of the factors involved as to why she will or will not hunt a certain way. I love this education, this is my new favorite KZread station. I’m thrilled to learn something new about the creation. The incredible variety of different birds as well as their very special and specific need, further builds my faith in the creator. The bird kingdom is so vast and varied, but they are only one of the kingdoms available for study, it’s mind boggling to think of all the creation out there that is to know and understand! It’s what helps me to appreciate that man was meant to live forever when the Bible says that “God has put eternity” into our hearts

It would be so very cool to see Martin actually win that Wildlife prize which he has been nominated for (and the 100k of course hehe 😜). After 50 years of pure dedication and teaching about the raptors, this really would be the right time for something like this IMHO. And absolutely also the right person. Ahh well, we'll see how it turns out. Wish you all the luck for it!! Especially since Martin also isn't getting any younger of course, and to invest in a new generation to keep this important work going.

I know some people might be distressed about the rabbit, but we must remember, this is how nature works and it's important for everyone to understand that this is, after all, nature's beautiful balance. Belle is so beautiful!! You really get a chance to get a close up look at her gorgeous coloring when the sun is right on her. Wow!!! I just love watching her fly and hunt and then get to see the final result of all that hard work. It is, however, a little difficult to hear the squeal but it’s part of nature. I have a question on the first rabbit. I couldn’t tell but did Belle “kill” the rabbit or did you do that Martin? Just curious if she gets to complete her task to the end. What a great adventure to watch. I’m envious!! I wish I could be there right along side watching it all and enjoying that lovely creature , Belle🥰🥰!! Thank you Martin for teaching us all about these wonderful birds.

Yesterday was the first time I watched one of your eagle rehab videos and today discovered the falconry, amazing and very interesting, thanks for the insight, it’s something I never really thought about. I’ll continue looking. Not sure if you cover it but would be interested in see how you capture a untrained bird and if they ever get lost, also do they ever return to the wild. I’m 70 yo and realize it’s a little late in life to start a hobby like this but find the interaction between bird and man fascinating .

A truly realistic video of falconry who is some really wonderful comments. It's not for the squeamish. Falconers used to cut off part of the captured animal and give it to the bird. That's the same as giving it some food and taking the whole rabbit carcass. The food the bird is getting is probably better for her than a peace of wild rabbit.

Belle is a great hunter, and I have 2 questions ? How long would it take Belle to kill the rabbit on her own , if Martin didn't help her by putting it down fast ? 2nd Question - what do the rabbits eat out there, as it all looks so dry with no green grass etc ? do they eat bark or do they eat those bushes ? There seems to be tons of Jacks out there, but what do they live on ? Maybe they go a little distance away to eat ? Do you know ?

It is not good for rabbits when caught by a bird of prey. Time to death can vary greatly. The rabbits feed off a variety of native and agricultural growth.

Martin, do you feel any pressure on your gloved hand when Belle lands and perches on it? Can she actually pierce that leather material? Also, I take back what I'd said earlier about her talons being small. I'm 41:46 into this video and she's got some nice sized talons!!!! I'm wondering though, is a Harris Hawk's grip as powerful or strong as an Eagle or an Owl? I ask because when Belle fought with and finally dispacthed that rabbit; I was amazed that she wasn't able to kill the rabbit instantly with her talons alone.

26:45 This behaviour right here (flapping to stay on top of the prey and the mantling after the rabbit is immobilized) is likely one of the reasons wings evolved in the first place and why a lot of non-avian dinosaurs had them despite being too large to fly.
