Hawk Attacks My Pigeons On Their First Toss!!

today we went across the river to do our first pigeon toss! unfortunately, the hawks must have caught wind of it, and they were right there, waiting.

    The Hawk that first caught the pigeon was a Coopers' hawk and the second hawk was a Red tailed hawk. That was pretty crazy to see. The pigeon was in shock from the first attack and made a easy meal for the red tail. Hawks are a never ending nuisance if you fly pigeons.

    Wow! This is an extremely astute observation!!! I went back and watched it in slow motion and you’re absolutely right! The red tail just stole the meal. Thank you for noticing this, I had no idea.

    @@pigeonsrocHaha Thanks man! As a pigeon flyer myself I find raptors super interesting. Thought it was odd seeing a red tailed on your bird. Since red tails are way too slow to catch them mid flight. I see Cooper's do that all the time or at least attempt to. So I had to rewatch the video. Usually even a Cooper's has a hard time catching a strong, experienced pigeon mid flight. So it was easy to tell your birds are inexperienced and not used to being attacked by hawks. But that was a really cool video.

    Love your vids and sorry for the loss of your bird. I learned as a past falconer that raptors can see weaknesses in individual birds flying in a flock. They hone in on that one bird. Once the Cooper’s hawk hit the pigeon it was an easy prey for the Red Tailed Hawk too. If it is any solace, that pigeon had something that made it the focus of the raptor. Something that we couldn’t see but the raptors can. In nature our birds are like a garden. The pigeons, doves and songbirds are the flowers. The raptors are the gardeners that weed out the sick, weak or diseased plants. The vultures run the compost pile.

    I’m sorry for your loss, Attachment seems to walk with Loss. Onetime I went to Marketplace shopping center in Groveland Mass and two birds swooped down..and then a body fell to the ground and I realized it was a hawk evicerating a pigeon.

    Once you release them a few times they will get with the program, I used to loose one bird weekly to the hawk. Sorry for your lost. The hawks like hanging out in trees and waiting on there prey, try releasing birds in an open area. Once they get with the program you should have fewer loses.

    Thank you Manuel! hoping after a few more tosses they will understand much better. I'm definitely going to take your advice and try a much less wooded area for the next toss. these falcons and hawks are relentless lately. fingers crossed!

    Ur gonna find that all 3 types get pigeons. The coppers get them on takeoff or landing only. The red tails are opportunist. The worst of the 3 is not a hawk but a falcon, the pergrin falcon to be exact, the worst one of them all. Sorry for your loss pal!

    Please inform your subscribers not to feed their birds before a toss, you should be able to just go in and pick them up and put them in the carrier and also take a loud whistle with you it throws of the hawk when he’s behind one of your birds and some yelling they are afraid of anything that’s bigger then them like all bullies and good luck in the future Nice loft and carrier

    is that a redtail ? usually this type of hawks don,t catch pigeons because they are not very fast , with the peregrine falcon and goshawk it,s a different story . your pigeons are very nice but a little bit slow .

    Next time drop your camera and catch your bird they recover quickly after an attack if you could recover it, a cemetery is a good hang out for hawks, mice, rabbits, feral pigeons etc.

    At 4.02 it looks like you left a little space in the basket for the your poor pigeons; could you not cram even more in and really overfill it? I would bet you and most of the racing pigeon fanciers kill (cull) more pigeons each year than the hawk ever takes from your lofts.

  • @pigeonsroc

    @pigeonsroc

    over a year of keeping pigeons now, and zero deaths from illness. they were only in the basket for a little while and had plenty of airflow. Lastly, I would never kill a pigeon unless it was so injured or maimed that killing it was the only option to prevent more suffering. I treat these birds well, Dave, and I have put blood, sweat, and tears into caring for them and feeding them year-round.
