Hawaiian Queens Kickstart Beekeeping Season

Ойын-сауық

I ordered some queens from Hawaii so I could get a jump on beekeeping season with early splits. How did it work out? Was the acceptance high or low?

    At least you dropped the frame on the box instead of the grass like I have been known to do, lol! I bought 10 Cordoban queens from our state inspector, and only 4 of them made it through the end of summer, so was dissapointed...however, one of those had 7 frames of sealed brood 3rd week of Feb, one had 6 and the other two had 4, so guess which ones I am getting ready to split. I always enjoy your videos Bruce, keep it up.

    Hey Bruce! I really enjoy your channel and the videos you do with Stream Team Bee's! I notice you started the inspections without much protection. How do you meal with the bee stings? I'd love to hear what you do and how you deal with stings. Maybe you and Stream Team Bee's could have a video on the subject. I do everything I can to protect myself from stings but would like to understand how i might better manage stings and wear less protection...

  • @brucesbees

    @brucesbees

    3 ай бұрын

    Of If I am dealing with bees that seem to be gentle I will use minimal protection but I have everything else needed and will often add layers as I need to. Much of the time I go ahead and put on the gear. Especially if I am working bees that I am pretty sure will be spicy, if the weather is not suitable or if I need to work fast. Genetics plays a huge role too and I am trying to get my bees calmed down a bit. But that is a work in progress. I pretty much always wear at least a veil. Even with the gentle bees. Though occasionally I will peek on some without any protective gear. The truth is that I get stung quite a bit. It really doesn’t bother me too much. But I do gear up if I sense them getting after me. Great question!

    Bruce what interested you in introducing Cordovans? I’ve heard they were least favored of the line of species. But I don’t know.

  • @brucesbees

    @brucesbees

    3 ай бұрын

    I am not sure they are the least favored. Depends on what you are looking for. These are Cordovan Italians. Cordovans are known for being gentle and being brood machines. So they are very good for a lot of things such as pollination and according to Zak these will produce a lot of honey. The downside is that they will certainly need to be treated for mites and will probably need to be fed more than some to prevent starvation during the lean times because they don’t shut down like other lines. I am trying to make early increases so it is perfect to have these queens that I can get early in the year and that build up fast as our spring flow will be starting in about a month barring any unforeseen weather issues like we had last year. I am looking forward to seeing how they do. So far they have been impressive. But it is still very early in the game!
