I was a very sensitive, sheltered little kid, who got taunted a lot for being a crybaby. I probably would have burst into tears and asked to go home while the kids all laughed and the adults all scolded me for being "spoiled". : Which, now that I think about it, is what usually happened with Easter egg hunts I participated in every year at church. To be fair, the big kids and the little kids all went at once- the adults herded us into a huge, disorganized group, counted down, and said GO. I think they got some sick pleasure out of watching us jostle for position, stampede, fall down, knock each other over, get trampled. (The especially sadistic parents made us wear our best clothes for the most sacred day of the Christian calendar, then screamed at us after the egg hunt for getting them dirty.) The big kids, the tallest and fastest, got all the eggs, while the rest of us scrats got dirt and skinned knees. The grown-ups were all "oh well, survival of the fittest, you'll be the one to get all the eggs when you get bigger", which, in hindsight, was pretty damned twisted. Not to mention ironic- picture your Sunday school teachers standing there, teaching you social Darwinism, while the mere sight of a biology textbook was liable to make them faint. After a couple years of bumps, bruises, and heartbreak, I refused to go anymore. We stuck to hunts in the backyard from then on- no bigger kids to push us down, no fancy Sunday dresses to spoil, no shrill screams for a Mommy more worried about grass stains than broken ankles. ...I think I need to go lie down for a while.

Speaking as someone great with kids, I've found that those who are amazing with kids usually don't have their own! It's soo much easier to have all that energy and love for little people when you're not constantly sapped of energy from the day-to-day stuff. When you're good with kids, you get the best part of kids and their parents get the less cute stuff like tantrums and messes. Speaking as someone who's been the favorite aunt for many, many years, I've been beloved by the little people in my life as the fun, "pays attention to me"/"does stuff with me" aunt. Now that I've adopted one of my nephews; and to be clear, despite having no plans for 2-legged children of my own, I love him and give him everything he needs and more, I still get the rotten parts of the "having kids" stuff: dirty diapers, him getting into everything, his absolute meltdowns at the smallest things- like being told not to chew on his dang sippy cup tops just breaks his little heart and then I feel like mean mom, even though he totally shouldn't be chewing on the freakin' sippy cup tops! Parenting is exhausting. And knowing how devoted they are to their animals and the fact that the zoo is their baby and they're busy, busy, busy, I very much doubt they will have any human kids. Either way, it's totally their choice and it's really a private matter.

**Suggestions for Halloween:** 1.) Turn all the lights either really low, or orange and maybe purple, and place candy bowls in front of some enclosures for trick or treating! 2.) As you have been working on, do a nighttime flashlight tour with no lights on at all! 3.) Make the zoo into a haunted house! Cobwebs to crawl under or step over, creepy tunnels to go through, fun spooky lights, the whole 9 yards!

Remember that your insurance only covers so much! Think of making things inclusive. Never anything ALL LIGHTS OFF - unless you're doing an adult theme and even then - remember that (strangely) the 100 Mile Club is a real thing. Always have staff at the turtle tank. That's one place actual interaction with animals - also Sharon - can happen. We really don't want anything dangerous or otherwise going into that tank. I can easily go on forever. I AM a wet blanket: safety first! Eye on the side of safety. Always have a larger number of staff than customer ratio on anything scary or dark. Don't count on the parents being the voice of reason... I'll quit.

I honestly love the message that the golden egg and the small eggs having the biggest prizes in this situation teaches kids, they work together. Don’t always expect the most out of the most appealing option, don’t always look for the “shiner” options in life just because you think it looks appealing. The smallest things bring the greatest joy in life not the biggest or the prettiest.

I thought about that but have you ever tried to take something away from a little one once they - very excitedly - found it? I assure you. It's not pretty. Maybe a "keep it close to ___" number. Then as a parent you have a MUCH better opportunity to try the "let's take a look at your eggs" and giving others a chance to find some eggs. Thankfully, Emily and Ed must have been in these situations as they put out 400+ eggs for each hunt! Very smart and hopefully they didn't run out. Another commenter had a great idea of Staff walking around holding a bag and nonchalantly dropping off new filled eggs. You'd have to be VERY nonchalant about it or start having a line of children nonchalantly following you!

We looked in the newspaper community pages to find things to do and my girls (3 all very close in age) thought it was sooo cool. It wasn't until they needed ideas themselves and were looking in their community pages (on line) and realized the most important thing: many of the activities were free or had nominal fees attached. We all got a big laugh as one-by-one each girl figured it out. My Mom did the same thing and passed it on to her 6 daughters. We stayed connected with our community and had so much to do. We then could afford a movie night here and there or go out to dinner at a nice restaurant. Thanks for putting that out there!

You might want to ask the kids from the first hunt(s) to help you re-hide the eggs for the next hunt, but make it clear they can participate in ONE hunt per day. That way they still get a "reward" if they hang around (they get to hang out with you and help you hide eggs), but they don't get to win prizes again for the subsequent hunts.

One thing I learned making programs for kids at a nonprofit: make a detailed record of what you did to prep for the event, for the event, and specifically what you would have improved on. That way next year you have a record of what went right and what can be done better. More detailed than this video. Maybe even make note of what date you should start prepping for it so it doesn’t sneak up on you. It’s also handy because if it’s a good enough record someone else can take over the project next year or the year after and use your notes from the last year or two as a guide.

Red, White, and Zoo with Snake Discovery!!! How about for the 4th of July decorating the enclosures with window stickers and sticking to an all American red, white, and blue decor theme. Maybe if the parking lot permitted, you could have a zoo animal summer party! A few animals could be out to enjoy some sun and the kids could play with chalk, bubbles, and maybe you could set up a few carnival games. You could do raffles with prizes or a spin the wheel for them. Popcorn, hot dogs, and/or a barbecue style meal could be a special ticket to buy or a la carte. Ending the night with some sparklers outside seem safe and kid friendly too!

Maybe picnics in the zoo for the 4th? And/or a light show in/on the building? For Halloween, you could do a trunk-or-treat type thing. Its where you set up different stations with carnival games where kids can win prizes and candy! At the schools I've worked at, we also turn it into a fundraiser with a cake walk or a raffle. Don't be afraid to ask teachers/schools near you for ideas on how to celebrate holidays in a fun kid friendly way!

I added a comment about making it more inclusive for people with disabilities too. I know that there are many types of disabilities, but then why not a full day of different hours for people with different types of abilities? People are most often not completely deaf or blind but they need different environments. Low light to find objects and low sounds around them for the beaping eggs if in more difficult hiding places. Just because you have a disability doesn't mean you want it to be completely simple - at least for certain ages. Hopefully if they ever do something like this, they'll ask you for ideas.
